Review: Snyder’s of Hanover Classic Hummus Filled Pretzel Sandwiches & Pineapple on Pizza: Yay or Nay?

JFG Nation, recently Iceland’s president has been in the news for expressing his disdain for pineapple on pizza. Forget the “politics” of that situation because, well, I don’t care about Iceland.

Let’s refocus on pineapple on pizza. We’re of course talking about “Hawaiian” pizza, or pizza that has some pork product (ham, sausage, bacon) and pizza as toppings to create a quasi BBQ-like flavored pizza. Marvo of the Impulsive Buy has told me this isn’t really Hawaiian Pizza, but regardless, the name has stuck. Pineapple on pizza is controversial – apparently. I once had someone tell me she’d rather die than eat fruit on pizza. Which seems…excessive.

Me? I’ve eaten plenty of pineapple on pizza – not my favorite, but I don’t spit it out in disgust, either. It’s more that I can understand the flavor, even if it’s not my first choice.

So, what say you, JFG Nation? Yay or nay? Great or gross? And if you’re into it, do you prefer it on thin slice, thick slice, square pieces, regular slice? And what pork product is the preferred one to eat – bacon, ham, etc.? Let me know in the comments below.

Today’s junk food: Snyder’s of Hanover Classic Hummus Filled Pretzel Sandwiches!!

JFG Nation, I love hummus, and hummus and pretzels go very well together. If you don’t like hummus, right off the bat this ain’t for you, but I love it – the tahini, the soy, the bean flavor. Hummus is just a tasty dip waiting to be dipped! On veggies, pretzels, crackers, chips – hummus is LEGIT. And Snyder’s of Hanover has crammed the flavor into a pretzel sandwich? Hmmmmmm.

DOES THIS TASTE GOOD? YES.

WHY OR WHY NOT? When I opened the bag, I immediately got a soy and slight tahini smell. Since hummus is basically a “wet” substance, I was curious to see how the flavor would be replicated inside of a sandwich pretzel. As I crunched a light pretzel disc, the flavor that emerged was creamy, chickpea flavored, and very savory. It was CLOSE to hummus flavor, but not quite. That is, the creamy spread inside the pretzel sandwich wasn’t as bright, wasn’t as tangy, wasn’t as flavorful as actual hummus. Still, the flavor closely approximated a hummus flavor. While the Pizza Pretzel Sandwiches exaggerated the flavors you might find in a pizza (sweet tomato, bright cheese, etc.), these went the opposite direction – it restrained the flavors of hummus that I like the most.

So, while ultimately these tasted GOOD, I wish they tasted a bit more like hummus.

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW? I liked the Pizza Sandwich Pretzels better. But I like where your head’s at, Snyder’s!

Count me as being in favor of pineapple on pizza. However I don’t think it goes well with a lot of additional ingredients, like i wouldn’t get onion, green pepper, mushroom, sausage and pineapple….but i quite enjoy it with just giardiniera as the other topping. And preferable diced, i’ve never seen it in rings on a pizza.

I was wondering how the hummus flavor would translate in a drier food!

As far as pineapple goes, I’m a fan of it on pizza, but only crushed or diced, and only with sweet flavors. We once tried the Fiery Hawaiian from Domino’s (ham, bacon, pineapple, jalapeno, and hot sauce) and liked the sweet/smokey/spicy combo so much it’s become our default “Hawaiian” order when we get pizza elsewhere.

Yeah pineapple on pizza is a tricky one. I used to be a major hater of it but it has slowly grown on me. It’s all about the combination though imo. I actually will be starting a pizza food truck in the fall and have been experimenting with different pies. I have an Island Fire pizza which uses a habanero sweet chili sauce base with bacon, pineapple and cilantro. I think the pineapple def pairs better with an asian take or something that is sweet and spicy.

  4. I’m just not a fan of the ham that usually goes with pineapple on pizza. Pineapple is probably my favorite fruit to pair with savory foods (I have an awesome tropical potato salad recipe). But as for your coworker…what about dessert pizza?

I wonder how hard it would’ve been to use real hummus?

Love pineapple on pizza. A combination to try is pineapple, canadian bacon, black olives and banana peppers. Yum!

When I was little, I shuddered at the thought of pineapple on pizza. Once it was the only kind left, and I peeled the chunks off. I discovered that I did like the flavor it left. Later, now I am a total fan of it. I get a strange combination that my boyfriend thinks is nuts: pineapple, minced garlic, onion, Italian sausage, pepperocinis or banana peppers. Mostly from those build-your-own thin crust places. So good
