Review: Doritos Cheese Explosion Mix & Do You Say DUH-ree-toes or DOOR-ee-toes?

JFG Nation, it’s hump day. I am SO tired because I’ve been up late watching, of all things, CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT PLAY. Ugh, who AM I? I should be going to bed, but instead I’m watching Gonzaga upset St. Mary’s at 11:00pm.

That reminds me though – like last year, I am AGAIN having a March Madness pool, hosted over on Yahoo, where YOU can challenge ME to see who is the best college-basketball-March-Madness-picker. Go HERE for details and how to sign up. CHALLENGE ME, I DARE YE.

Pivot: I’ve already had arguments with colleagues and friends on Facebook on how to pronounce certain words this year. Is it PEE-can or Pi-KAHN? (I say PEE-can). Is it TOOs-day, or Tea-yooz-day? (I did say Tea-yooz-day, but after getting shouted down by the angry mob, I’ve been making a concerted effort to say TOOs-day. Jerks.)

So now I present to you ANOTHER topical pronunciation debate – do you say DUH-ree-toes or DOOR-ee-toes. I CLEARLY say DUH-ree-toes, and I’m wondering if anyone will join me on this controversial journey. Yes, I know the word is spelled D-O-R. But I’ve been saying DUH-ree-toes since I was a kid. Is it a regional thing? (Upstate NY?) I certainly don’t say other words this way…I’m not saying KLUH-ro-form (Chloroform), and the hobbits weren’t trying to cross into MUH-dor.

But on the flip side, I think it’s TOTALLY WEIRD when I hear people pronounce it DOOR-ee-toes. What are you, trying to show off your fancy education and your fancy pronunciation skills by sounding out each syllable properly? GO POUND SAND, NERD. I once heard someone pronounce Doritos “DO-ER-ree-toes.” Like, he started it with the word, “doer.” I had to stop everything we were doing and ask, “What is the matter with you?”

Anyways, how do YOU pronounce Doritos? Let me know in the comments below, ESPECIALLY if you have a random way of pronouncing it beyond even the two-three ways I’ve described. Weirdos!

Today’s junk food: Doritos Cheese Explosion Mix!!

Doritos Cheese Explosion Mix: The Money Shot

Doritos Cheese Explosion Mix! Four great Dorito shapes and flavors rolled into one bag! To help promote…Batman v. Superman??? What the F. Sigh – anyways…

doritosmixcheese-02

Doritos Cheese Explosion Mix contains regular Nacho Cheese Doritos, rolled up Jumpin’ Jack Cheese Doritos, Spicy Nacho…uh…caution triangles, and pasta curled Four Cheese chips. Hm. This is a random bag.

Normally, I enjoy snack mixed because you get to mix flavors – a little nuts, a little chocolate, a little cranberry, a little chocolate, and more chocolate, and more chocolate… but what’s the goal of this mix? It’s not like if you each a Dorito and a rolled up Doritos together, you’re gonna be like WHOA THAT CREATED A WHOLE NEW FLAVOR. Nope. Cheese explosion? I guess.

Ok, let’s just get to it. I liked this Doritos Cheese Explosion Mix fine, but I probably wouldn’t BUY this again, even if I’d eat it again. Here’s why – BRINGS NOTHING NEW TO THE TABLE.

The Nacho Cheese Doritos are a staple, and tasted like expected. The rolled up Dinamita-like chips? Yeah, I could taste a tad bit of cheese difference that resembled jack cheese, but the rolled up chips are harder/crunchier, and the cheesiness got lost. The triangles had a little bit of burn, but it was TINY and didn’t taste much different than the Nacho Cheese Doritos. Plus, since they resembled the JACKED 3Ds line of Doritos, the corn chip flavor was much stronger and overtook the cheese flavor. The pasta curl-shaped chips were supposed to be four cheese, but there was no distinguishing element that made these taste any different than the others. The curls tasted a bit stale, and I got more corn than cheese flavor.

Eaten all together? Yes, DUH-ree-toes, it was cheesy. CHEESE EXPLOSION? …….sort of? I mean, the truth is, when I stuffed a big handful of these in my mouth, it basically all tasted the same with slightly different textures. Enough for me to buy these again? Nope. Would I eat them again? Sure…they were fine. Just…fine.

DUH-REE-TOS, Central Jersey, 80’s kid. I never heard it pronounced the other way, maybe since i’m still in Jersey.

  2. Gatorette says:

    Door-ee-toes!!!!!!!!!

  3. Jeni says:

“Do-REET-ohs” It’s subtle, but I don’t enunciate the first syllable hard enough to make it sound like “door”. And now I’ve said “Doritos” 75 times before lunch. I think that’s a record.

It’s interesting to me that a guy from upstate NY says PEE-can like a Southerner. I do, but I’m from Georgia.

The word that always gets me is “pajamas”. I say “paJAHmas” – all the ‘a’s make the same sound. But when I shorten it I say “jammies” like strawberry jam.

I’ve thought so much about it and said it so many times now that, frankly, I’m not sure how I normally say it now! Overthink…..maybe I need to flush my brain and respond in a few days after I forget this conversation.

    • Sarah says:

I feel exactly the same…..IDK how I say it! Someone needs to put me on the spot in a week so they can get my natural pronunciation!

  5. MP says:

PEE-can and Pi-KAHN doesn’t sound right to me. PEE-KAHN does. I say Toos-day & Dor-ree-toes. Yeah that’s right – DOUBLE R! Just like Guillen & Bonilla don’t sound anything like their spelling. And why do we pronounce salmon as “sam-mon”? What kind of stupid language is this?? 😛
