NEWS: Frito-Lay Flavor Swap Mix Multipacks Exist!

JFG Nation, just a quick post today. By now, you might have heard that Frito-Lay is NOT doing a “Do Us A Flavor” contest this year (man, and I was looking forward to trying some tuna tartare potato chips). Instead, they are doing a “Flavor Swap” contest, where the tag line is ONE STAYS. ONE GOES. Basically, Frito-Lay is pitting two flavors against each other (one new, one old) and people get to vote on which flavor survives – simple enough.

Normally, I’d be hunting for the NEW flavors, would only find gigantic bags of them, and would get all frustrated. During the “Do Us A Flavor” contests in the past, the most vocal comment I heard was “Why don’t they just release all the flavors together in small bags so we can try all of them?” And then I’d hear from the ether that toward the end of the contest, people would find multipacks of those flavors in random gas stations. Too little too late, Frito-Lay! This is BS.

So………imagine my surprise when I wandered into Walmart and found THIS:

IT’S A GARBAGE BAG FULL OF CHIPS! Oh wait, no, sorry….it’s a Frito-Lay Flavor Swap Mix MULTIPACK!!!! All for ~$7.

That’s right, Walmart was selling these sacks of chips, complete with its own internal handles reminiscent of Glad bags. Cough. Anyways, let’s take a closer look:

Like I said before, this Frito-Lay Flavor Swap is very simple. Vote, and one flavor stays, and one goes. This bag contained 20 single tiny bags (1 oz each), with 2 of each flavor and….4 classic Lay’s??? What the – I mean, I love classic Lay’s, but take those away, and give me 3 of each flavor and make this a 24 pack.

Plus, some random voter gets $250,000??? I want.

In the end, a 20 oz bag of chips for $7….not horrible. And you can see from this close-up what the Frito-Lay Flavor Swap faceoff flavors are:

Kettle Cooked Sea Salt & Black Pepper vs. Kettle Cooked Olive Oil & Herbs

Classic Style Cheddar & Sour Cream vs. Classic Style Smoked Gouda & Chive

Classic Style Flamin’ Hot vs. Classic Style Fiery Roasted Habanero

Classic Style Honey Barbecue vs. Classic Style Korean Barbeque

I’ll be trying all of these flavors eventually, but I’m curious to see all of your initial opinions, if you’ve had any – which flavors have won the faceoff for you? Do you like this idea? Do you like the multipack? And do you miss the Do Us A Flavor contest? What flavor would YOU have submitted? Let me know all that and a bag of chips in the comments below.

PURCHASED AT: Walmart, Germantown, MD

Weren’t we all going to flood the entries with honey butter?

  2. karubah says:

    Nice.

I have been hunting for the Korean BBQ and habanero chips at my local Walmarts, but no go so far here in Indianapolis. Did find some nice ghost pepper tortilla chips though.

  3. Chris B says:

Oh MAN. I would have loved to find this garbage bag full of chips. I’ve tried them all because I am human garbage bag myself. Very briefly:

    1) Olive Oil & Herbs is my FAVORITE. Definitely will let Sea Salt & Black Pepper disappear in favor of this.

    2) Smoked Gouda is tasty; basically a combo of Sour Cream & Onion & Cheddar Sour Cream. But Cheddar Sour Cream is too iconic to let go. Stay put.

    3) Fiery Roasted Habanero has a great heat; just basically a vinegary/garlic/spicy chip. I can never find Lay’s Flamin Hot, so nothing to compare to. I don’t care about this battle personally.

    4) Korean BBQ – they nailed this seasoning; straight bulgogi. But I thought it was too complex for snacking. Let Honey BBQ stay.

Looking forward to your thoughts, JFG!

Let me just say – if they get rid of Cheddar & Sour Cream, my business will go to Ruffles. **checks** Oh, Lays owns Ruffles.
Hmm, my votes would go: Kettle Cooked Olive Oil & Herbs, Cheddar & Sour Cream, Flamin’ Hot & Honey Barbecue. But I’d rather taste them all first.

  5. Tenko says:

I’ve never had any of these, but habanero looks good.

  6. Mike N. says:

I wonder if this is a Wal-Mart exclusive? I just picked up one of this big mixed bags lately (the Family Fun mix, I think it’s called.) The 1 oz size actually makes a nice snack or side.

The only one I don’t like is the Cheddar Sour Cream, btw.

  7. Chip Review says:

Wow, haven’t seen these FlavorSwap – Faceoff giant snack packs – dang that would have been the way to really try these out! We have tried all four of the new flavors now, and we have of course tried the four original flavors (at least we think we have…).

Either way, all four of the new flavors are pretty great. This is a fun promotion that Lay’s has constructed. Below is how we would rank the four new follows, and whether or not we would SWAP for the new, or SAVE the “original/traditional” withstanding Lay’s flavors.

    1) Korean Barbeque – really great chips (please, PLEASE, kick Honey Barbecue off of our store shelves immediately!!)

    2) Fiery Habanero – not habanero spicy, but still, super flavorful, stellar seasoning blend (sorry Flamin’ Hot, you may be a delicious flavor seasoning on other chips or CHEETOS, but you do not rock Lay’s potato chips)

    3) Smoked Gouda & Chive – overall a very even, smooth, notably acceptable new chip (plain and simple, Frito Lays has a amazing sour cream & cheddar recipe – tangy, salty, funky, cheesy, this new flavor doesn’t quite compete)

    4) Kettle Cooked Olive Oil & Herbs – nothing wrong with these chips. certainly taste the olive oil, and then some of the herbs on the tail end (that being said, why mess with a time and tested flavor combination that we all know pairs perfectly with potatoes of any type!)

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts as well.

  8. Sascha says:

I bet the chive and gouda chips are pretty tasty, but do not mess with cheddar and sour cream.

I like the salt and pepper, but I wouldn’t be opposed to the olive oil and herbs, they sound tall good.

Would definitely go Korean over honey

No horse in the spicy battle, too hot for my palate.

  9. Carlos Danger says:

You know how the ABA makes recommendations for judges?

Junkfoodguy should make official voting recommendations for this contest.

  10. Jeni says:

Perhaps the Classic Lays are there to serve as a palate cleanser as you hammer through all the flavors during one epic Netflix binge.
