Review: Limited Edition Toasted Coconut Oreo, The Nosh Show Ep. 64, & What Was In Your High School Locker?
JFG Nation, I know that many of you, like me, had a high school locker. The question of the day is: what did you hang up in your locker? Did you have posters of Maxim models clad in lingerie? Ripped out pages of your Sports Illustrated, plastering images of Lebron and Peyton Manning everywhere? Or maybe your locker was just littered with the yearbook wallet size photos everyone traded back and forth like baseball cards.
My first locker came in 7th grade. It was a THIN thin locker where there was only enough room to line up maybe three books side by side; any remaining books had to be stacked vertically on top of each other. Great design, everyone. Why is my locker a vertical mail slot? Plus, on top of that, the locking mechanism was basically a jutting knife blade. I STILL have a thin scar on my right hand from one time when I crammed a book into my locker and cut open the top of my hand. GOOD TIMES EVERYONE. Nothing to make fun of here, pre-pubescent teens – ignore the blood spewing from my appendage. Of course, I was less concerned about my actual health than with HOW EMBARRASSING OMG NOOOO the whole thing was. Junior High, folks.
Early on, I remember it being SO IMPORTANT that there were COOL THINGS hanging in my locker. So I put up yearbook photos of any girl that would give me one (not many). I had my favorite Calvin and Hobbes desk calendar pages posted (WITTY CARTOON COMEDIC HUMOR, THAT’S CERTAIN TO MAKE ME POPULAR). And, of course, even though I didn’t play soccer, since soccer was THE sport in my school, I had random cutouts from Eurosport magazine of sneakers and cool jerseys. I needed some air freshener; my locker reeked of desperation.
As I got older, the soccer cutouts got replaced by pages from Time Magazine (ugh, what was I thinking), the Calvin and Hobbes comics were replaced by Far Side comics, and the yearbook photos dwindled to just photos of my girlfriend (YES SHE WAS REAL, JERKS). By the time senior year rolled around, I was so over high school the inside of my locker didn’t have anything. No pictures, no photos, no cartoons, no nothing. I think maybe just my class schedule was taped up? Who knows. The whole old school image of people congregating around open lockers to chat never happened; most people at the end of the day were like, “Why the hell are we still at school? Let’s get the eff outta here.”

Limited Edition Toasted Coconut Oreos: The Money Shot
Limited Edition Toasted Coconut Oreos were discussed on the Nosh Show recently, and this is another flavor where, when I heard it, I was like, “Oh….yeah. Why haven’t they made that already?” It’s not like we haven’t eaten coconut before – I enjoy Girl Scout Samoas, and coconut creme pie is one of my favs. Plus, Oreo has ventured SORT OF into this space before – they had Fudge Cremes that were coconut flavored. Of course, those only had coconut-flavored creme, whereas these actually have bits of toasted coconut in them.
Cocout tends to be a pretty polarizing coconut; people either love it or hate it. I rather love coconut. I like coconut milk, I enjoy coconut in candy (GIMME A MOUNDS NOW), and I think actual fresh coconut flesh is good to eat. I’m a fan. I have high hopes for these Limited Edition Toasted Coconut Oreos.
Limited Edition Toasted Coconut Oreos don’t come in a peel back package like most Oreos, which was sort of annoying. HOW WILL I KEEP THESE FRESH, OREO? Anyways, as soon as I opened the package, coconut aroma hit my nostrils. But did it smell like sunblock? I know that’s the question many are thinking; answer: NO.
No, these had an aroma that made me a bit giddy. While the picture on the front of the package is of coconut cake – which I also love – these smelled like another coconut treat which I adore: MACAROONS. No, not the French fluffy wafer cookies with creme inside (much like an Oreo). COCONUT MACAROONS. The little snowballs of coconut and condensed milk and egg white that bake up to soft chewy goodness. Those things – these smelled EXACTLY like them.
When I held one of these Limited Edition Toasted Coconut Oreos up to my nose, I could smell an almost buttery aroma. Taking a bite, my mouth was filled with creamy coconut flavor. I thought the coconut creme paired perfectly with the Golden Oreo – while the aroma was all coconut macaroons, the flavor combo of creme and cookie was indeed like a coconut cake, or one of those coconut donuts you get from Dunkin’.
After a string of crazy fruit-flavored Oreos from last year, I must say, I think Oreo hit another home run with these Limited Edition Toasted Coconut Oreos – the flavor is very simple yet executed very well if you’re a fan of coconut. The bits of toasted coconut added a very nice textural element to the creme; I didn’t feel like I was only eating normal Oreo creme with coconut oil added to it. The creme and cookie very buttery and very sweet, helping to push the coconut flavor into the baked-good-flavor-territory.
I know everyone is quick to rush in and mock Oreo for creating another limited edition flavor, but I would say I’d like to see these stick around for a while. Similar to the Marshmallow Crispy variety, I don;t know why we don’t see MORE Golden Oreos with bits mixed into the creme. DO MORE OF THIS DESIGN, OREO! My request: CARROT CAKE OREO with bits of real carrot cake in the creme. DO IT.
And as for the rest of you – if you like coconut, eat these. DO IT.

There was no point in decorating my locker. I spent all of 5 minutes a day at it. I might have had a sports schedule magnet but that was it.
My request would be to make Cookie Dough & Red Velvet PERMANENT. No more creating something cravable I can’t get anymore.

JFG is in for a disappointment – I NEVER decorated my locker. By high school I basically abandoned it & carried my books, binder, lunch & coat in my duffelbag after one day I forgot my textbook in my locker & thought, “Okay, once was enough”. Plus we only had 3 minutes to sprint from one end of the building to the other & a locker was just too time consuming.
@MP: Good point re: not having enough time to go to locker. I think I hit it once in the morning – once at lunch to switch books – once at days end
I didn’t decorate my locker. In High School I ordered a bunch of free autographed photos of C-listed celebrities. I put these up and people were asking me if I really met them. I told them “yeah” and it became wildfire with people asking me where. I admitted to them that I ordered from the internet.

The school I went to didn’t have lockers. There was a high shelf running the length of the hallway on both sides and you got a little space on the shelf with one hook underneath to hang your coat (and anything else). Just one of the reasons my school sucked big time, lol.
@PL ISley – well that’s ONE way to get things stolen!
a lot of people are saying they should’ve used the chocolate wafers for this one. i don’t really care either way because i hate coconut, lol. actually, that’s a lie, i’ve come to kind of like a little hint of it in bars (i.e. perfectly simple peanut crunch bars, kind maple pumpkin seed bars). but more than just a tiny hint of it and i gag.

I remember pictures in middle school of Rickey Henderson, Dan Marino and pullouts from Surfing magazines because you know that’s what us beach kids did in NJ because we are so darn cool., or a tool.
I can’t seem to find these coconut oreos. I just hope they are as good as the brownie batter ones, they have been on a hot streat at Nabisco.

I had a few pictures in my locker in high school–they were of thumb nails of book covers of what I had or wanted to read, pictures of flowers, girly type stuff. One year I had a a glossy picture of assorted jewelry pieces ripped out from a magazine.

I never decorated my locker either – I remember only having about 5 minutes in between classes that were in different parts of the school, so my locker was more of a “hurry get open” experience than a “interior locker design” one.
I’ve not really been on the ‘new oreos” bandwagon either. That being said the coconut ones sounds really good and if I see them at the store I’ll have to pick up a pack.
@Ruckus – I think the rushing around is part of what caused my hand to get cut. GIVE US MORE THAN FOUR MINUTES BETWEEN CLASSES!
Yeah, I never decorated my locker, either in junior high or high school. Just didn’t care enough to do so. In fact, since I only went to school half-days my senior year and didn’t need it (only 2 classes a day), I gave my locker to my sister (who was a freshman), thereby skyrocketing her “cool” factor, since she had a locker in the “senior hall.”
I probably won’t try these Oreos, since although I generally like coconut, I’m not a fan of the golden cookie. If they had used the chocolate cookie, so it was a cookie version of a Mounds bar, I’d be much more interested.

I tried the coconut Oreos yesterday, and while they were good, I felt the coconut flavor wasn’t strong enough.
At least you had lockers. They looked so cool in movies.
I think lockers were taken out in a lot of high schools because of maintenance issue (highschoolers are so messy). The only lockers available for use was for PE.
I’m sure Duran Duran pics decorated my locker in high school.
I hate how I can NEVER find the limited edition OREO…never! I longed for the red velvet, searched everywhere, never found them. I’m sure I would ADORE the coconut ones…doubtful I’ll ever find them. Even tweeted to OREO themselves…got not response.
Same here. The few limited flavors that I have really wanted to try, ZERO luck. Brownie Batter is non existent and I have been to two Wegmans to try and find these and the only carry Caramel Apple and Halloween themed Orange colored creme.
JFG- I’m doing it, I’m coming out of the woodwork! I’m one of your loyal but never comments readers (…for 2 years now, wow me…shame…) and I want to know, where is your next post?!
Honestly, I stroll through target and all the end-caps grab my eye with new junk food and I search for your reviews and nothing! You led me to the utter magic that was lemon-chocolate-oreo! And to avoiding all the pumpkin spice twinkes this year (I won’t do it trendy packaging!). I know you said a change in format and busy, but I need your dependable reviews! So please post.
(^BTW to people above, I tried the brownie batter and not gonna lie, I did not like it! I think it comes down to the fact that I don’t like regular brownie batter- should have thought of that. Cookie dough, sure, but I’d rather eat my brownies fully cooked than in batter form, so the oreo was a miss for me…)
High school was so long ago I can’t remember 😉 Anyway, I’ve been asking for a awhile, but I’d like to see a year end ‘sampler pack’ where you get 2-4 each of all the flavors introduced that year. That way I can try them without being stuck with a whole package.
