Review: Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos (w/ Chocolate Cookie!) & Knives Up or Down?

Junk Food Nation, quick personal OCD question – when you place knives in the dishwasher, do you place them up or down? I’ve polled about 15 people, and the answers ranged from “Always down – you’ll impale yourself otherwise” to “Always up – that way the dirt, etc. runs away from the part that touches food” to “Always down – that way you keep from stabbing your hand when you reach down to put the clean stuff away” to “I never place knives in the dishwasher.” As to that last one: WHAT?

I am a place-knife-up person, but the more I think about it, I’m not sure why. I think originally it was the reason that was listed above – everything else we put in the dishwasher goes up (at least in my house) – spoons, spatulas, forks, etc. So why not knives? Plus, since I tend to pre-wash everything, it’s not like there’s a ton of food lodged in there, so up or down, the knives will get clean. The JFGal is a knife-down-person, and will turn all the knives I put in the washer face down.

What about YOU, Junk Food Nation? Let me know in the comments below. It seems like this is an issue that requires addressing.

Today’s junk food: Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos!!

Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos: The Money Shot

Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos? Didn’t we just have those….oh wait. These have CHOCOLATE cookies, instead of the previous Golden Oreo version. TRICKY, OREO. TRICKY. What, you think you can do anything now that you’ve made S’mOreos?

Still, these are interesting…pairing lemon with chocolate? I’ve seen that once before with Pepperidge Farm Lemon Chocolate Milanos…and LOVED them. Would these work too?

Opening this package of Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos, I sniffed and got a decent lemon-y smell. I definitely got the dark chocolate wafer aroma too, which was interesting.

Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos contained some pretty yellow creme! I tasted it by itself – and it was that sugary, lemon-pie-filling flavor that I remembered from the Golden version of these Oreos. In other words, sugary lemon-y goodness. Nothing wrong about that.

Biting into and chewing these Limited Edition Lemon Twist Oreos, I have to admit – THESE WORKED FOR ME. They really did. The first flavor I got as I chewed was the semi-bitter, lightly sweet dark wafer cookie. It had the grittiness I remembered from normal Oreos…but rather than a vanilla creme adding sweetness as I chewed, the lemon creme gave a citrus finish to the flavor. And, oddly, it was really nice – the lemon fruit flavor added to the chocolate wafer taste to create and almost cereal-like flavor profile. If I closed my eyes, I swear these sort of tasted like Froot Loops – that same gritty chew that corn cereal has. That same half not-sweet corn cereal flavor mixed with sugar sweet sugary fruit coating. That same aftertaste of fruit-y chewed up stuff stuck in the divots of my teeth. IT WAS ALL THERE.

Anyways, the point is, this addition of lemon and chocolate was successful because (1) the dark chocolate wafer is not super sweet to begin with, (2) the lemon creme adds a refreshing finish to the flavor, and (3) the resultant combo wasn’t really chocolate plus fruit but more of an overall fruity cookie flavor.

These are hard to describe, but easy to eat. Seriously – this flavor just works. In a lot of ways, I think this flavor works better than the Golden one where the Golden Oreo is so sweet it can compete with the lemon flavor. Here, the lemon flavor was on a stage of its own.

Jim Carry would say: Chewy Chewy! And I love this!

  2. Jaime says:

Knives down. The only reason i do that is because that’s what i was taught by my mom. She was the only one (according to her) that knew how to load the dishwasher in our house.

  3. Sophia says:

Any knife that is not a butter knife is hand washed, butter knives (and forks) go cutting side down. I’m more worried about being poked by a fork tine than hurt by the butter knife.

As for the cookies, I have an aunt who recently retired and started working as a food demonstrator at grocery stores to earn extra money, and she had these cookies. By the end of the demonstration the display only had one pack left, so I guess people like them.

Personally, I don’t like citrus and chocolate (and I REALLY like chocolate, I spent $35 on dark chocolate at World Market yesterday) together, so I would probably pass.

  4. MKC says:

I jumble my silverware both up & down in the dishwasher. I don’t want to have spoons/forks nested together so one side doesn’t get clean (like two spoons nested = one front & one back doesn’t get clean). I don’t worry about getting poked because my dishwasher silverware tray can open up so I can grab things by their handles.

  5. Cate says:

All flatwear must be HANDLE up. It will be clean either way, but when removing the clean items you don’t want to grab the part that will be going in someones’s food or mouth.

  6. Jessica says:

I’m also knives down so as to grab the handle, but any chef’s knives are hand washed because they dull faster in the dishwasher.

Citrus in general goes really well with chocolate. I come back from every trip to Western NY with at least a half dozen boxes of orange chocolate. Hopefully more companies get on the bandwagon.

    • Sarah says:

Jessica!….there is nothing better than the orange dark chocolate sponge candy from Buffalo…..never to be found anywhere!

  7. Lindemann says:

Nothing brings out the vociferous opinions like the topic of how to load a dishwasher.

I do what the manual for my dishwasher says (knives up, everything else down) and don’t pay attention to how other people in the household load it unless there is something really weird going on.

And, in case you don’t have the time to watch the video in the link, Bosch recommends knives face down – “Safety first!”

  9. MP says:

    Chocolate & lemon – gross!!
I always put my forks & spoons up, but my butter knives down. I don’t put sharp knives in the dishwasher. But I’m not going to touch a dirty utensil once it’s in there to flip it around.

  10. Jeni says:

Chef’s knives – hand wash. Regular knives – blade down (My kids unload the dishwasher, so blade down is safety first for us.) Flatware – up and down to prevent nesting. (Said children generate a lot of peanut butter-slathered spoons.)

WILL EAT these … LemOreos? Your review has overcome my initial skepticism.

  11. Jessica says:

Interesting! I definitely did not think the lemon/chocolate combo would work but after your review I am intrigued! I wish you could buy smaller packs of all the different Oreo flavors. As for the knives, only butter knives go into the dishwasher (all silverware facing up) and other knives I hand wash!

  12. Elisa says:

Knife blades down on the rack and the dishwasher. No point in getting stabbed!

  13. marianne says:

I want these cookies! Chocolate and citrus is a great combo for me.

As for the dishwasher… everything down. But not for safety reasons. I agree with Cate above that I don’t want to unload the dishwasher and have to touch the fork tines or spoon bowls. Why germ up just sterilized cutlery?

Also, since you polled about 15 people before posting it to the blog, have you considered the possibility that your OCD now has the upper hand?!

  14. Heather H. says:

I always place knives in the dishwasher facing down. That goes for forks and spoons, too. Like you, I prewash so there’s no issue there. It does seem safer to put silverware in facedown, but mostly I do it because I’m simply tossing stuff in the holder. Just slap those suckers in there! 😉

I’m not a huge fan of anything lemon-flavored, but I’m excited about this new frontier for Oreo cookies. The chocolate ones are so much better than the golden ones. This gives me hope that I might get Candy Corn Oreos or Gingerbread Oreos on chocolate cookies at some point.

    I’ll just leave this here:

    http://theoatmeal.com/comics/dishwasher

But forks/spoons/butter knives – any way is fine. Steak knives or other instruments of pain go down for safety of the unloader. I’ve been randomly stabbed by a knife when placing another utensil in the holder. Major EWW factor and vigorous hand washing.

I need these in my life. I plowed through the golden lemons in about a 36 hrs my first package.. Could set a new record with these!

  16. C. says:

Knives up or knives down? I don’t ‘get the point’ of this question, ha ha.

Anyway I can tell you that no one in NYC has a dishwasher in their apartment unless they have their mummy&daddy help them with rent every month. Too, the plumbing in the Big Apple just isn’t strong enough to handle 8million dishwashers. Landlords simply won’t provide them. Everyone washes their silverware in the sink.

If I had a D/W though, I’d be a knives-down person. Its no fun getting stabbed and the theory that food particles are best washed-off-the-knife-from-the-top-down makes only a faint shred of sense to me.

Hey JFG, you and Miss Manners are on the same wavelength:

I figure I should point out they do have a weird coffee and lemon aftertaste. I haven’t decided if I like them or not but they are so addicting. I ate the whole package from 11 something pm last night till 5 o clock pm today.

  19. Romans623 says:

Also, I don’t care how my knives go in the dishwasher. I just try to get it done as fast as possible which is weird since I have medically diagnosed OCD.
