Review: Limited Edition Cotton Candy Oreos, The Nosh Show Ep.53, and IT’S 4/20

Junk Food Nation, it’s 4/20! I feel like a big segment of my audience (where audience = people who enjoy junk food) are people who are big supporters of 420.  Well, go out and celebrate today, 420-ers. Eat some Funyuns, drink some Mountain Dew, and play Clash of Clans until you pass out. Or, eat a few Taco Bell Chickstars, drink a bunch of orange Slurpees, and watch the same episode of Chopped multiple times. Either/Or. Lots of ways to go with this one.

The best 420 story I heard once was a friend of mine who, before celebrating 420, made a whole pile of PB&J sandwiches and left them on the counter so he could come in later and be gleefully surprised by them. And he was! Crazy kid.

Do you have any good 420 stories? Let me know in the comments below.

Meanwhile, in entirely unrelated news, EPISODE 53 OF THE NOSH SHOW IS HERE!

For the uninitiated, The Nosh Show is a podcast started by Marvo from The Impulsive Buy, featuring Ryan from GrubGrade, Dubba from On Second Scoop, and, of course, me, your friendly neighborhood Junk Food Guy.  And today marks the release of The Nosh Show, Episode 53: Is It Gritty?

Today’s junk food: Limited Edition Cotton Candy Oreos!!

So, I was feeling a bit left out. Everyone I knew was finding Cotton Candy Oreos at their local Target. Yet the primary Target store I go to, for the past three weeks, has been BARREN when it came to these Oreos. GET YOUR S TOGETHER GERMANTOWN.  *grumble*

Anyways, I was in Virginia for a separate occasion yesterday, and popped in to a Target there, determined to find these stupid cookies…

And after walking the aisles, THERE THEY WERE! Limited Edition Cotton Candy Oreos!!  FINALLY. And why the heck are they on the top shelf of an end cap FACING AWAY from the main corridor?? Why are you hiding these, Target?

Limited Edition Cotton Candy Oreos: The Money Shot

We discussed these Limited Edition Cotton Candy Oreos on today’s Nosh Show, and Marvo and Dubba said two thumbs up!  But how good WOULD they be?

Limited Edition Cotton Candy Oreos

When I opened up this pack of Limited Edition Cotton Candy Oreos, I expected to be overwhelmed with Cotton Candy aroma…but no. Which I guess maybe is a good thing. I don’t think cotton candy normally smells like anything, so I wouldn’t want fake smells to be added to these cookies. I just go a lot of sweetness and Golden Oreo smell.

The creme of these Limited Edition Cotton Candy Oreos, if you don’t mind bright colors, was a pleasant light blue and light pink. I tried the crème by itself….AND HOLY COW. IT DID, as everyone around the internet has been saying, TASTE EXACTLY LIKE COTTON CANDY. Pretty spot on, actually. That sugary grittiness is there, and while it’s hard to describe the flavor of cotton candy (sugary?) I can genuinely say that they captured the flavor perfectly. That weird sharp sugar flavor when your tongue first touches cotton candy and it sort of tugs as it melts on your tongue. I got that flavor perfectly.

But, like most cookies, the flavors are killed when you add the actual Oreo part of the cookie –the cookie mutes it, that is. And that’s where I think these Limited Edition Cotton Candy Oreos sort of fall apart. The creme by itself was super tasty – for one cookie I tried the blue creme first, for another I did the pink first. Either way – great cotton candy flavor; I really didn’t think there was a difference between the two. But when you added the cookie, I could barely taste any cotton candy flavor. BOO.

When you have flavors like Pumpkin, Gingerbread, flavors where a doughy component makes sense, the cookie can enhance the overall flavor. Not here. These cookies tasted good, don’t get me wrong, but there’s never an instance where you’re eating cotton candy and adding a sugar cookie to it. With these Oreos, the cookie dulled the cotton candy taste, unfortunately.

Eat them again? Yes. Buy them again? Prob not. But thumbs up to Oreo for getting that creme flavor spot on!

Do you get Hardees’ email? They sent one out today with the subject “Wake and Bake” — it’s a $1 coupon for their Mile High Biscuit combo.

  2. Steve B. says:

My 420 story – I went out on my first date with my wife on 4/20/2002. It appears to have worked out.

  3. Jeni says:

    Serving size: 2 cookies. *snerk*

    Right, Oreo. Rii-ii-ight.

  4. Kaitlyn says:

i don’t feel like the cookie mutes the flavor too much, but i didn’t eat the creme plain, either. one thing – you didn’t talk about how fluffy the creme is! i found it to be so much fluffier than the normal oreo creme, but maybe that’s just me. i loved these!

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Kaitlyn – def fluffy – I didn’t notice it being SIGNIFICANTLY fluffier, but I’ll try it again. YOU have to try the creme by itself and let me know what you think!

  5. MP says:

I never eat an Oreo dry. Always dunked in milk. Oreos are like the driest cookies.
As for Target & other stores, for whatever reason all of my local & chain stores never seem to carry many of the new national released items featured on this blog, and I live in a heavily populated suburbia. Still have never seen Supreme Cheddar Doritos.

  6. Sascha says:

The only thing I took from this was the picture of the cotton candy Oreos and Reeses being ‘sweet together’. I can’t imagine that combo working, unless, of course, you celebrate 420.

  7. I posted my review of these last week and pretty much agree with everything you said. Maybe a Double Stuf version of these would keep the cookie from overpowering the filling? Or maybe cotton candy flavored cookies?!?! No?

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Erin: Great review and great camera work! “The resulting flavor was more sugar cookie and less cotton candy cookie.” – SPOT ON!

  8. Whaaat? You got a fancy end cap display at your store? I’m jealous!
