Junk Food Nation, Happy Memorial Day! How will YOU be spending this holiday? Will you be eating tons of hot dogs, burgers, and drinking lots of beer? Will you be attending a parade, visiting a memorial, spending time with loved ones? Will you be watching the movie “Independence Day,” confused that Memorial Day and Independence Day are NOT the same day?
Memorial Day means different things to different people, and everyone spends it differently. Plus, every town in America has different Memorial Day events that will occur today. Please let me know how you intend to spend it in the comments below, including any shout outs you want to give. I’m interested in knowing how Memorial Day gets spent in your neck of the woods.
As for me, I will be giving thanks to all who fought to give us the freedoms we have today here in the United States. It is because of those who sacrificed that we are able to walk freely in the streets, have free elections, and do silly things like write a blog about junk food. Or even sillier things like do a podcast about junk food and fast food.

It does make one wonder, however, why this didn’t happen sooner. I mean. Oreos are good. Chewy Chips Ahoy are good. They are made by the same company. Why not cross pollinate sooner?

New Oreo Creme Filled Chewy Chips Ahoy! is basically just a typical chocolate chip cookie with a layer of creme inside. This does seem like a bit of a lost opportunity though, doesn’t it? Besides the chocolate chips, Nabsico could’ve had a few chunks of actual OREO embedded into the cookie itself. THAT would be next level. You missed out, Nabisco.

I think it’s funny because when’s the last time you brought out a package of cookies and the party you were at started hootin’ and hollerin’? I guess maybe these would do it – and there’s a first time for everything.

New Oreo Creme Filled Chewy Chips Ahoy!: There’s the creme
New Oreo Creme Filled Chewy Chips Ahoy!: Thin ribbon, but it’s there!
New Oreo Creme Filled Chewy Chips Ahoy! looked like regular Chips Ahoy cookies, and they SMELLED like regular Chips Ahoy cookies. I bit into one and……well, these TASTED pretty much like Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies too!
What I mean is this: As you can see from the picture, the ribbon of Oreo creme inside the cookie was present and visible. But all this creme did was sweeten up the overall cookie. I mean, if I’m being extremely observant, yes, it did taste like I dipped a Chewy Chips Ahoy cookie into the familiar sugary Oreo creme. But so what? It’s not like Oreo creme has THAT distinct of a flavor that the resultant combo blew my mind. Oreo creme is just a creamy sugar…and once that is chewed into the Chips Ahoy cookie itself, the whole thing just tastes very sweet.
Now, to be clear, this isn’t a BAD thing at all! These tasted pretty good – the truth of the matter is, however, that there’s nothing really special about these to me. Like I said, there was a missed opportunity here – should’ve had some Oreo pieces embedded.
Not worth a re-buy for me, but all in all, a decent, predictable cookie. I’d eat it again, even if I wouldn’t buy it again.

I did think that when you had said “Oreo Cream” it would be like cookies and cream filling…so definitely a lost opportunity. I’ve made Oreo stuffed chocolate chip cookies before (and I’m not the only one). Seems odd…but I look forward to the birthday cake ones!

You asked how I will be spending my Memorial Day. Well, here’s your answer: cleaning up after my pre-Memorial Day BBQ from yesterday. Scrub scruc scrub that grill. And, of course, eating left over BBQ.

Birthday cake ones have more to them than these… also they are both better if you put them in the microwave for 8 seconds.
@Laura: HMMMM microwaving these is a solid idea!
I’m not that big a fan of the cookies they use in Oreos (whenever I eat Oreos I always make them double or triple stuffed so I can taste the least amount of cookie as possible), so I’m glad they made them the way they did. I probably wouldn’t be that interested if it had actual cookie pieces in it.
@Devin: You need to just get a big jar of frosting and make your own chipwiches 🙂
I watched the Memorial Day Concert on PBS last night. And not to mention seeing those riding in Rolling Thunder coming from all over the country!
I remember at one time Chips Ahoy had a sandwich type cookie with a (thin) frosted middle so this isn’t the first time they’ve included frosting.
@Elisa – Rolling thunder is pretty awesome. I saw one caravan that was like 40-50 bikes deep!
I think the last time I ate a Chips Ahoy was when they were striped.
