Review: Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream, The Nosh Show Ep. 22, PB & Co. Contest Winner, & Yesterday Was Awful!

Junk Food Nation, yesterday was an awful day. First, Philip Seymour Hoffman dies. Yes, I know it was drug related, and all the discussion that comes with it – but still, that sucks. I’ll never forget him as Brandt: “Her life is in your hands, Dude.”

Then the Super Bowl sucked. First, I was WRONG WRONG WRONG about how I thought the game would go. All the stuff about the weather favoring Peyton?  Turned out to be a non-factor – I was WRONG about that. Seattle played jaw-droppingly good football on both sides of the ball.  They were better in every sense.  And, like I said on Friday, I actually had no real rooting interest in either side, so I give huge props to Seattle – they totally deserved it. This wasn’t a Super Bowl that the Broncos lost; the Seahawks definitely WON it.

But still, to me, the Super Bowl stunk, because it wasn’t even CLOSE – and that’s no one’s fault (well, maybe Denver’s). As a fan watching the game NOT involved with either team, talk about a LET DOWN game. My friends and I chatted through the fourth quarter. Twitter was abuzz with Bruno Mars being more exciting than the play calling.  Even my Patriots friends who are living in Boston and despise Peyton Manning told me that, “By the 3rd Quarter, even the schadenfreude had worn off. This was just boring.” I’m pretty sure the folks over at Brooklyn Nine-Nine were pissed that they were going to get a subpar lead-in from the game.  It felt like Bills/Cowboys, 1993, all over again. Yuck.

So, by 10:30pm, I was stuck with a stomach full of gross cheese and beer, football was over, a muted Brooklyn Nine-Nine playing on TV as I washed dishes and threw out stale chips.  Sigh.  Ah well, on to the next. When do the Olympics start, again?

CONTEST WINNER TIME!  Let’s get right to the winner of the jar of Peanut Butter & Co. Dark Chocolate Dreams and Cook Book!  You guys entered using Twitter…well, a LOT.  I stopped counting past 500 entries…WOW. Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream: The Money Shot

FINALLY.  My buddy Rob brought this Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream over for the Super Bowl, and I FINALLY had a chance to try this?  What’s that you say? This came out THREE MONTHS AGO, you say? The Impulsive Buy, On Second Scoop, and The Ice Cream Informant have ALL already reviewed this, you say?

I say SUCKS TO YOUR ASSMAR.

Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream: I’m kind of a big deal…

I love scotch.  Scotchy scotch…sigh. Making Anchorman jokes is over, isn’t it?  Not only did Anchorman 2 come out already, but it’s OUT of theaters already. Boo.  Alright, moving on.

Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream: Cow needs a velvet robe

On the Nosh Show, Dubba said that this Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream was unrelentingly sweet.  He didn’t love it…but another writer for On Second Scoop, Nick, did.  Split decision.

Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream: Stay classy, family farmers

Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream is described as butterscotch ice cream with butterscotch swirls. I have to admit; I’m limited in my exposure to butterscotch.  Besides NEVER selecting it as a topping for my ice cream at sundae bars, the only butterscotch I think I’ve ever had were Werther’s Originals.  And I think those are actually caramels.

Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream: Can’t discern much from the ingredient list

Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream contains butter oil.  I’m hoping there’s a comma unintentionally left off there, but I don’t think there is.

Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream: smells like happiness

When I cracked open this tub of Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream, it smelled like butterscotch, no doubt.  Like I was sticking my nose right into butterscotch syrup.  Sort of smelled like egg nog too. Weird.

Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream: YUM

I took a bite of this Limited Batch Ben & Jerry’s Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream, and my brain exploded with sugar.  There is no doubt that this is the first, the only, and the best, butterscotch ice cream I have ever tasted.

The ice cream base is already loaded with butterscotch flavor.  Sort of like a nog flavor without the spice or rum, this very buttery creamy ice cream alone felt like I was eating a cream that had been thoroughly blended with butterscotch sauce.

What put it over the top was the butterscotch swirl, which turned out to be a combo of butterscotch sauce and some butterscotch crushed candy that clumped in some places to give a nice crunchy texture to the swirl itself.  Some parts of the swirl were just rich butterscotch; other parts crackled under my teeth with sugar as I chewed.

I thought the combo of the swirl plus the sweet base would be too much for me; instead I found myself LOVING it. Each bite started out the same – a creamy, egg nog-y flavor that, as it melted and combined with the swirl, became more and more and MORE butterscotch-y/caramel-y by the second.  Call me a butterscotch convert, Ben & Jerry’s – this flavor was just awesome.

PURCHASED AT: No idea

COST: No idea (I’m so helpful, I know)

  1. Lindemann says:

I liked it a lot because it is tooth-meltingly sweet and had that cooked sugar taste I love so well, and then blasted your face with it. Not an ice cream for those who value moderation, tastefulness, and balance, but for those who truly seek the outer limits. I salute you, Ben & Jerry’s (owned by Unilever Corp.).

  2. Sarah says:

I had a chance to buy this over the holidays. Since butterscotch has and always will be my absolute favorite flavor of ice cream and sauce, I decided not to buy it. There was no way I could have a serving size. That whole thing along with 68 grams of fat would disappear in minutes. You have made me regret my decision even more! I subscribe to NOSH at iTunes but can’t figure out how to rate it….

  3. Mike says:

I was mad at Ben & Jerry’s for a while because it seemed like a lot of the 2013 flavors were executed rather conservatively. When I saw that there were only two things going on in this pint, I was afraid they had let me down again. I was wrong. It had plenty of crazy in it, and I would definitely buy it again.

  4. Devin says:

For the record, it was New Girl that was aired right after the game (and thus is what would have been on your TV at that time), with Brooklyn Nine-Nine airing after that. And despite the lower ratings for the game, New Girl actually did pretty decent as far as post-Super Bowl shows go.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Devin: Ah, I stand corrected. Also for the record, wasn’t hating on New Girl or Brooklyn 9-9! Hating on the awful Super Bowl…

  5. Elisabeth says:

Try sprinkling a tiny bit of salt over your scoop. So good.

  6. “yesterday was an awful day”

Hey, the Bills no longer have the record for most SB losses. So, you got that going for you.

  7. Jealous. I cannot find this flavor ANYWHERE and have checked countless stores and about a dozen different chains. It’s nowhere here in the boonies of Indiana. I guess they must not think we like scotch.

  8. coco says:

I LOVE Scotchy Scotch Scotch and I am freaking out that I can’t find it anymore. I have asked my deli to order it and THEY are telling me the ice cream delivery guy says he is OUT. What kind of world are we living in???

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Coco: I KNOW. I’ve started to see it disappear. I might need to buy out the remaining stock (if I can find any) and hoard it

  9. Karen says:

I know this post I’d rather old but I still dream about Scotchy Scotch Stotch. I was on the website to complain about Coffee Toffee Crunch Bar and decided to look up Scotchy Scotch Scotch. They don’t list it anywhere, it’s strange.

When it was out, I hoarded as much as I could. One time I bought 5 pints at once. Out here, that’s 25 bucks of ice cream. It is hands down the best ice cream I’ve ever had.
