Review: Gingerbread Twix & The Nosh Show, Episode 16! & Daylight Savings Paranoia

Happy Monday morning, Junk Food Nation.  Hope you survived Daylight Savings.  We all like Daylight Savings time, right? Fall back, the extra hour of sleep?  No one hates it (except for maybe parents, whose kids are bouncing off the wall at 500am).  However, for me, Daylight Savings time always makes me the most paranoid person ever.

It used to be that you’d wake up, check the TV news to make sure the time was, indeed, rolled back an hour, and spent the next 20 minutes rolling back all the appliances in your home.  Fridge, microwave, oven, alarm clocks, wall clocks, and finally, watch.  But that initial check with the TV news to make SURE the hour was rolled back was, for me, akin to holding hands before jumping into the pool. “Are we doing this? ARE WE DOING THIS?  We are? Ok…1, 2, 3…GO!”

But now, EVERYTHING is digital, so it rolls back automatically…but I’m SO USED to tuning into the collective news pool to ensure the hour roll back, that I automatically DISTRUST every single clock when I wake up.  “Well, my PHONE says 8:37….BUT HOW DO I KNOW APPLE DIDN’T SCREW UP AND IT’S REALLY 7:37? OR 9:37?? OR HOWEVER THIS WORKS??”  It doesn’t matter if my computer and phone BOTH agree and say a certain time, I still need to check four other sources before I’m convinced.  I have issues.

I dunno – I want to make sure I didn’t get stuck in some parallax universe from the Twilight Zone where I’m living one hour behind (or ahead) of everyone else, and the Langoliers are coming to eat me.  Does anyone else have this paranoia? Tell me in the comments below.

Today’s junk food: Gingerbread Twix!

Gingerbread Twix

Gingerbread Twix: The Money Shot

Gingerbread Twix….OMG, you gotta be kidding me.  You guys know how I feel about gingerbread…one of my four favorite fall food groups.  Twix, however, I haven’t reviewed at ALL on this blog before.  It’s not because I don’t give Twix love…in fact, I think Twix might be one of my favorite candy bars.  But honestly, there hasn’t been much to say about Twix – besides adding peanut butter, there hasn’t been THAT MUCH to say about them.

Gingerbread Twix, however….WHOA.  Now we’re talking.  Let’s do this, cookie bars.

Gingerbread Twix

Gingerbread Twix: 80 calories per every tiny candy bar

We talked about Gingerbread Twix on today’s Nosh Show episode, and I said at the time I’d definitely Nosh these.  Problem: these Gingerbread Twix don’t seem to have any gingerbread ingredients listed on the bag.  Where’s the ginger, man?

Gingerbread Twix

Gingerbread Twix: Gingerbread caramel?

Gingerbread Twix come in these little tiny wrapped sticks.  Seriously, these things were like an inch and a half long.  What, are these for Halloween?? BECAUSE THAT WAS LAST WEEK, TWIX.  Gimme some full size, c’mon now.

Interesting note re: the description….gingerbread caramel?  So, not gingerbread cookie, but gingerbread caramel?  Hmmm…..why?  Wouldn’t gingerbread cookie make more sense?

Gingerbread Twix

Gingerbread Twix: Standard look

Gingerbread Twix, unwrapped, looked like a traditional Twix, and smelled like one too.  Now immediately recognizable gingerbread smell; instead it smelled of milk/dark chocolate.  Let’s crunch….

Gingerbread Twix

Gingerbread Twix: Plain cookie!!!!

The first taste I got when I munched these Twix was still the sweet chocolate-y exterior.  Then came the cookie crunch and that thick layer of gooey caramel.  At first, there wasn’t any gingerbread flavor, but with my second chew, the gingerbread taste emerged.  And I could tell the gingerbread flavor was, indeed, coming from the caramel!

Constructed using a normal cookie bar like regular Twix, the gingerbread flavor in these Gingerbread Twix came from the caramel – as I chewed the candy bar, the caramel released really strong notes of ginger, molasses, cinnamon, spice, all that good stuff traditionally found in gingerbread.  Because these flavors were attached to the caramel, the flavor attached to my teeth and helped season the cookie and the chocolate, no matter what I happened to be chewing.

It made more sense, now, why Twix opted for gingerbread caramel rather than gingerbread cookie.  Rather than flavor up the cookie bar, which might’ve required a LOT of seasoning to be noticed amongst the strong caramel and chocolate flavors, Twix went with flavoring the caramel,  latching onto the flavor that was most dominant in the first place.

Gingerbread Twix, most of all, had a great aftertaste.  As I rubbed the last bit of cookie and caramel against the roof of my mouth with my tongue, I knew this was a winner.

BUY IT. NOW.

Are these a Walmart exclusive, or are they available from other retailers? My Walmart is really slow with getting out the seasonal candy, yet my grocery store had it out November 1. I really want to try these, as I’ve had a craving for Twix recently.

  2. Not sure if they’re exclusive, but it’s where I found them also last Friday. They’re yummy. Not transcendent (see Oreos, Gingerbread), but pretty yummy. Still would’ve liked to see a spiced Biscoff type cookie in there.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Dana: GAH I STILL NEED TO FIND AND EAT GINGERBREAD OREOS

    • They’re definitely back at walmart, picked up, uh….ok, 3 packages of gingerbread oreos (had a $1 off 3 products coupon) yesterday – had a ton on the usual walmart oreo endcap (99% of the time walmarts seems to have both an oreo endcap and oreos on the shelves it looks like). In my defense, I did open 2 packages and vacuum seal the cookies for later in the winter cravings. And I may have bought 2 more bags of gingerbread twix…

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Dana: WOW. If there is ever a nuclear winter, I wanna be stuck in YOUR storage space.

  3. ibagoalie says:

They are a Walmart Exclusive, along with the gingerbread M&M’s. Apparently Target got the Peppermint flavored M&M’s as their exclusive. I was only able to find the M&Ms since the Walmart near me is taking their time putting out xmas candy. (I hate Walmart, so I am trying to limit my visits)

  4. Rachel says:

These are so disgusting, I was honestly pretty sure you were going to agree. They taste like stale teething biscuits. There is a really weird flavor to them; I was extremely disappointed!!

  5. EMR says:

hey, I have to give it to TWIX on this Gingerbread flavor. just tried it and i am amazed. its awesome!!!!!

  6. Sascha says:

These are definitely not exclusive to Wal-Mart, haven’t even seen them there yet, but did buy some from Target. Had the exact same reaction, first bite was rather uneventful, but every bite thereafter was pure bliss.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Sascha: AHHHH CONFLICTING INFORMATION! lol – “pure bliss” – classic 🙂 Glad you enjoyed them!

    • Yeah, Target had a pile of them last night. They also had Twix Santas! Package was normal 2 Twix bar size, but you could feel through the bag that it was some sort of santa shaped thing. Might have to buy some to see what’s going on in there.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Dana: UGH THESE GINGERBREAD OREOS ARE ELUSIVE

Those Twix Santas look fun – I’m sure they’re normal Twix on the inside, but I appreciate the effort for the company to get in the holiday spirit

  7. Julie says:

I can’t wait to try these! I just bought a bag.

  8. Icedus says:

You totally called it on these–I picked up a bag at Meijer the other day. I went ape for them, and so did my friends I shared ’em with. I can’t promise I’ll be as generous with the next bag.
