In Stores Now: Breaking the Slump

Junk Food Nation, this past couple weeks, I hit a bit of a dry spell. A slump. What I mean is that I was finding NOTHING new to review.  Sure, I have a stash of goodies that I can fall back on, but in terms of new relevant things in stores? NOTHING.  Limited Edition stuff? Nope. New flavors? Zippy.

The problem? Well, partially, it was Superstorm/Hurricane Sandy. The local markets were just wiped clean, and the normally stocked “Seasonal” or “Specialty” sections of my Walmart, Target, etc. were picked over and decimated.

So what could change that? Well, it’s a new weekend, for one, so many stores in the DC area have restocked by now – almost two weeks post-Hurricane. And I decided to drive far far away to a couple of Target and Walmart Supercenters/Superstores to ensure maximum coverage.

And BOY did I hit home runs.  I found things I hadn’t only seen on other blogs! So I am back and fully loaded, Nation. I’ll unroll a bunch of these cool items in the coming weeks.  Plus, I found a BUNCH of other things that I thought were interesting, but was not THAT interested in reviewing.

So let’s get to it: In Stores Now!

Orville, you too!?

I found these Orville Redenbacher;s Lime and Salt Naturals Microwave Popcorn at Walmart. Can something be “natural” when its microwave popcorn? I say nay.  The whole lime movement has been intriguing, though I don’t EVER remember squeezing lime onto my popcorn.  Weird.

Hot cocoa you can chew!

The Limited Edition Frosted Marshmallow Hot Chocolate Pop-Tarts were also found at Walmart. I still assert that many of these Pop-Tart flavors just taste the SAME…and they just add a new label or name to it.  Does anyone NOT think these probably taste JUST like the S’mores Pop-Tarts?? You can’t fool me, Kellogg’s.

Crunch Lunchbox Packs?

Butterfinger Lunchbox Packs?

Nestle, please.  Crunch and Butterfinger Lunchbox Packs? I remember when these were called Fun Size…now where did I see these….oh yeah, three weeks ago, DURING HALLOWEEN.  Stop trying to trick consumers, Nestle, and focus on making delicious candy.  And Target, shame on you for selling this crap.

Bagels and craisins…ew

Limited Edition Thomas Cranberry Bagels, huh? Really Walmart? Thomas took bagels and stuffed them with craisins, added a poinsettia on the wrapping, and this deserves prime placement on the floor?  Why didn’t you do this when the Pumpkin Spice Bagels came out a couple weeks ago.

Banana popsicles???

Saw these at Walmart, and was intrigued.  Banana Mania Popsicles? As in, banana ice, banana flavored popsicles?  Usually, when you go to the grocery looking for a cold banana treat, you go for something like a frozen banana dipped in chocolate… I’ve NEVER seen someone take a liquid that TASTES like banana and make a popsicle out of it.  Whoa.  Has anyone HAD these???

Huh huh…balls.

You can find these Utz White Cheddar Show Balls at Target AND Walmart, and their nothing special (they’ve been around for a while), but I LOVE cheese balls and just wanted to give them a little love.

How…classy?

Finally, I found these Ritz Snowflake Limited Edition at Target. So…they’re Ritz that have been specially printed and shaped to look like snowflakes?  One side of me says, STUPID WHAT’S SO SPECIAL I AM CRITICAL BECAUSE I HAVE A BLOG GAAAAH….while the other side of me thinks this is marketing genius.  Why SHOULDN’T a great cracker like Ritz take advantage of the holiday season?  They were the exact same price as regular Ritz, so if I’m someone looking to have a party and get some crackers, I am DEFINITELY going to buy these.  It’s simple, and likely all Ritz had to do was put in a different cracker cutter, and that’s it.  I approve Ritz.  I approve.

That’s all for today.  Have you tried any of these? Let me know below!

Or hit me up on Twitter @junkfoodguy or LIKE my Facebook Page and message me there. Also, you can always email me at junkfoodguy@junkfoodguy.com. Let’s hang out.

Sincerely,

Junk Food Guy

I think lime juice on corn is a thing…but popcorn? eeeeesh. And I LIKE lime juice (just saw a wide selection of weird wafer cookies at Ocean State last night and picked, yup, lime…lime wafer cookies).

  2. Adi says:

You’ve *NEVER* put lime on your popcorn?!?!?! You haven’t lived! You haven’t tasted how great popcorn can really taste!!!

  3. Shorneys says:

I’m going to call shenanigans on calling popcorn a 100% while grain. No. Just no. Even if it technically is, NO.

  4. Grocery Gems says:

I would love to try everything on this list, especially the lime popcorn! You guys get such great stuff in the US so thanks for sharing, here in the UK we can just drool while we read all about it!

I once reviewed a banana ice lolly called the Nestlé Pirulo Jungly. It was awesome, and even had a peelable outer layer, just like a banana skin. I’d love to try the Banana Mania too!

  5. Elisa says:

I agree on the Ritz crackers. Great for snacking at your desk too!

  6. Dubba says:

You would think I would learn from the last time I tried to comment on your blog with my phone that it ended in disaster. Anyways – I picked up the cinnamon sugar Pringles as well as a couple of other things – I’m excited to try them out

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Erin: NICE! Yeah I got the other Pringles too – reviews forthcoming!

  8. Nick Rovo says:

I feel as if popsicles become irrelevant once you hit high school. Seriously when was the last time you enjoyed a popsicle, let alone had one? Yeah, I can’t remember either.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@NicK: Yeah, I haven’t had a popsicle in a long time. I’ve had lots of italian ice over the summer, though, which is like crushed up popsicle, right?
