REVIEW: Lay’s Fried Green Tomato Wavy Lays & HOT TAKE: Deep Fried Oreos Aren’t Good
JFG Nation, its August, so that means it’s State Fair season. With that in mind, I want to offer up a hot take: Deep Fried Oreos aren’t good.
I love eating deep fried stuff, and fried chicken is nirvana. French fries are heaven, and donuts are mouth sex. But Deep Fried Oreos are an abomination.
Why? The entire purpose of frying something is twofold: 1. To super heat whatever is inside the fry. 2. To add flavor via the fried coating. THAT’S IT. When you deep fry a candy bar, it’s awesome – the whole thing turns molten and stays inside the fried coating. You’ve turned the candy bar into the best donut ever! But a Deep Fried Oreo doesn’t become molten. Yes the creme heats up, but that liquid sugar isn’t enough to get over the fact that the wafer layers are still just there. Hot. No transformation. And now you’ve breaded them. I don’t want another bun outside of my hamburger bun, so why would I want more dough outside of my Oreo?
Plus, since it’s a sweet item, you can’t readily add flavor to the dough coating like you can with a savory item. No paprika, salt, etc. Don’t give me this powdered sugar BS – if I just wanted something sweet, THEN WHY AM I COATING THE OREO IN FLAVORLESS DOUGH?
So yeah. Deep Fried Oreos are BS. I’ll take a Deep Fried Snickers 10 out of 10 times over a Deep Fried Oreo. Let me know your opinion in the comments below.
Today’s junk food: Lay’s Fried Green Tomato Wavy Lays!!
Second Lay’s Do Us A Flavor variety, in the books! I’ve had fried green tomatoes only twice before and was underwhelmed. Mainly it tasted like a fried slightly tangy disc – the key was the aioli or remoulade that you were supposed to dip the fried tomatoes into. THAT stuff is TASTY.
DO THESE TASTE GOOD? Yes.
WHY OR WHY NOT? I just have to say this: these tasted good. They had enough boldness that I would rank them over the Everything Bagel chips from yesterday. And I’m not a huge fan of Wavy Lays but this favor worked – the added greasiness of the Wavy Lay matched the flavor well.
The bag smelled like fried things – reminded me of how a fried poboy smells. Once I crunched a chip, I smiled – these nailed the flavor of the remoulade that you dip fried green tomatoes into. They have a sort of mayo-y flavor with the added creole flavor, with a little bit of tang to resemble the chopped pickles in the remoulade. Basically these chips tasted like fried potatoes dipped in classic Cajun remoulade sauce.
They didn’t really evoke Fried Green Tomato to me because, as we’ve established, FGTs don’t really taste like anything. So sure – these could be FGT flavor, these could be New Orleans Poboy flavor, these could be seafood cake flavor. As long as they nailed the remoulade flavor, these could be any of those things.
But in that sense, these were TASTY. Thumbs up.

There are many ways to deep fry an Oreo and serve said deep fried Oreos. We have a local food truck that does them perfect: They are dunked in funnel cake batter, dusted with powdered sugar and drenched in chocolate syrup. Eat them fresh and the cream runs out the side of your mouth.
I’ve had them wrapped in biscuit dough too. Not as good.
Now what’s your take on other deep fried sweets? Deep fried cookie dough? Pop Tarts? Twinkies?
@Jessica: I’m still skeptical of other sweets – adding dough on the outside of dough seems redundant. But I am prepared to be proven wrong (if I find a good offering)
plp dont get how certain things tend t fail because hey lets just say that when u fry sum things it doesnt taste as good due to the inconstincies in how evrything melts and all that chemistry. a fried oreao works as its just the batter and the oreo actuall stays the same inside. some other things wont work due to the way thaat it gets off the fryer.. anytihng dep fried is good..
Deep fried oreos is done right when the batter is excellent. Pancake batter is ideal but can be easily flavored. Why not other oreos? Golden oreos or flavored oreos.
So far the Everything Bagel and Fried Green Tomato Lays look the most intriguing. Will have to keep an eye out for them next time I’m at the supermarket.

the batter needs to work and of course ut tasting the batter as long as the contents inside dont change. all chemistry.. a deep fried oreo is just a bigger oreo due to the batter size and the flavor but doesnt change how small oreos r.. thts the prob.. u dont want just batter.. i would have masde oreos alot bigger because size is evrything.. but who likes to have small cookies.. thats y they made double stuffed because dam give me a hell of a creame and waffer.. hate when plp need to fry sumthing to make it bigger then what its not.. movving along
I am 100% percent in agreement with you on deep fried oreos….had them once at the fair about 10 years ago when they were all the rage and found them completely overrated and have never had another one since!
And the reason you are underwhelmed by fried green tomatoes is b/c nearly ALL RESTAURANTS cannot make them correctly. I abhor tomatoes, but a fried green tomato someone’s grandmother made in a cast iron skillet can be heavenly! The one time I had great ones someone’s mother made them back in the early 80s for me…..never had a good one since till my hubs and I went to a small country cooking restaurant (they were divine)…..I know somebody’s grandma was back there coating them in cornmeal and frying them in cast iron
I tried the green tomato chips today. I do not taste the green tomato taste that should be the main focus of this chip. the chips were slightly over cooked and had a seasoning that did not resemble the seasoning I have ever experienced on a green tomato. The concept was exciting and I was really looking forward to tasting this chip. I bought two bags as they were buy two for $5 at my local super market. I feel bad for the young man who suggested this flavor. Lays has failed him.
I can’t find these chips in any store around me to but them. I’ve even went on Walmart online and still can’t find them. Where do you buy them from?
