Review: Hawaiian Licorice Company Red Apple, Sour Pineapple Licorice

Hey there, JFG Nation, I hope everyone had a nice 4th! Let’s get right into it:

Today’s junk food: Hawaiian Licorice Company Red Apple & Sour Pineapple Licorice!!

Hawaiian Licorice Company has been on my radar for a while now. They did they’re first Kickstarter back in 2014, asking for $7000. They got over $28,000 pledged. Wow. They did a second Kickstarter this past Fall, asking for $12,500 – and they got over $55,000. This stuff must good, or people wouldn’t be throwing money at this company so liberally. So when they asked if I wanted to try some, it was a resounding YES!

I first tried the Sour Pineapple flavor. The licorice pieces were sliced short, about 1-inch in length, and covered in crystal sugar.

DO THESE TASTE GOOD? YES.

WHY OR WHY NOT? When I opened the package up and sniffed, I got a distinct Pineapple smell. I popped two pieces into my mouth and chewed – WOW. So tasty. The texture of the Licorice was perfect – soft, chewy, not a pain to chew through like stale Licorice. You could also tell the ingredients were natural because it didn’t feel plasticky like Twizzlers (and I love Twizzlers).

Flavor was sweet and on point with a fruit flavored Licorice. This wasn’t hit you in the face sweet like a Twizzler Filled Twist. You could tell this was legit natural flavor with only enough sweetness to make the Pineapple flavor sing. It straddles the perfect  balance between fruit and Licorice. Super impressed. Good tart on the end.

The red apple variety didn’t come with crystallized sugar but was a satisfying DEEP RED color. Really tasty looking.

DO THESE TASTE GOOD? YES.

WHY OR WHY NOT? When I opened the package up and sniffed, I smelled apples but it also smelled slightly citrus-y. Again amazing texture – the perfect cut length and the perfect chew.

Flavor – SO GOOD. I liked this even better than the Pineapple flavor. It takes some chews to get the fruitiness out (like a good Licorice should) but once the apple flavor came out it was bright, sweet, slightly tart, and on point. Crisp is a good word for it. Really clean flavor.

I had to stop shoving these pieces into my mouth. WAY too easy to eat – both flavors were not cloying and so I ate several pieces from each before I realized what was happening. You could tell these weren’t just a bunch of chemicals bound together in Licorice form. Really really great product.

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW? Right now, HLC had a promotional code for 60% off, when using the code summer at check out. I’d use it. This stuff is excellent – if you like licorice. 60% off???? Cmon now – go. NOW.

PURCHASED AT: sent to me but you can buy it at HawaiianLicoriceCompany.com for $6 a package! Well worth it.

Oh my gosh! Licorice made with licorice is a huge weakness of mine! Those sound great! I’m one of those freaks that like black licorice. I’ll have to look this up.
