Review: Kellogg’s NutriGrain Bakery Delights Lemon Crumb Cake (with Poppy Seeds) & A Quick Side-Review: Starbucks Cascara Latte

JFG Nation, today is a random post – two reviews in one!

Over the weekend, I walked into Starbucks and was going to order my typical Flat White when I saw the sign NEW NEW NEW and called an audible. I purchased SBux new “Cascara Latte”:

Per the SB website: “Inside each coffee cherry are the seeds we’ve all come to know as coffee beans. Cascara is the dried fruit of the cherry itself. It lends delicious, subtle notes of dark brown sugar and luscious maple.”

Hoooookay. Well, it tasted good. Really good. Sort of like a Flat White, but with a bit more maple brown sugar sweetness. I didn’t add any sugar to it, and it was really very sweet already.

Yeah, that’s it. *Cough* *Twiddles fingers* Uh, thank god this isn’t a coffee review blog. Onto the junk food!

Today’s review: Kellogg’s NutriGrain Bakery Delights Lemon Crumb Cake (with Poppy Seeds!)

Kellogg’s NutriGrain Bakery Delights Lemon Crumb Cake jumped out at me because, well, I honestly can’t remember the last time I’ve eaten a NutriGrain bar. And now they’re delving into dessert? Are these “healthy?”

Kellogg’s NutriGrain Bakery Delights Lemon Crumb Cake aren’t TOO bad, I guess. 160 cal per bar is standard, and it’s not a TON of sugar. Eh – these are just so-so on the nutrition scale, I feel. I feel like this is going to be one of those moments where, sure, they aren’t bad for you if you only eat ONE, but I’m going to just eat the whole box and be done with it, ok?

Kellogg’s NutriGrain Bakery Delights Lemon Crumb Cake come individually packaged, and when you open them up, they look like this:

After I opened the single serving Kellogg’s NutriGrain Bakery Delights Lemon Crumb Cake, the aroma that spilled out of the foil couldn’t have smelled more like lemon cake. It was citrus-y and pungent.

Biting into the Kellogg’s NutriGrain Bakery Delights Lemon Crumb Cake, the texture of the cake was nice and spongy, but not too fragile – my teeth definitely sank into the pastry comfortably. Sort of like a dense cake, or a good store bought muffin. The flavor was pretty spot on when to compared to any lemon poppyseed cake I’d ever had. It had lots of lemon flavor and the poppyseeds provided the texture I was familiar with – that pop and that “poppyseed stuck in the teeth” texture. The crumb on top was just ok – it didn’t add a whole lot except for a bit of crustiness on the top of the cake slice. It wasn’t like the Entenmann’s crumb donuts, where the crumb adds a whole new level of sugariness.

Still, overall, I enjoyed these a lot. As a packaged item, I didn’t notice a lot of leftover oils in my mouth or even that weird “packaged” pastry taste. These were flavorful and light, and I could crush eight of these in a row. I KNEW IT.

Lemon-y and good. Buy. Eat. Enjoy.

The JFG

“Kellogg’s NutriGrain Bakery Delights Lemon Crumb Cake are TOO bad, I guess.” Did you mean to say “aren’t too bad”?

  2. Sheila says:

That feels like a lot of carbs & practically no fiber or nutrition. Might as well be a cupcake!

  3. Erin says:

@Sheila For those needed a sweet treat but watching their caloric intake, these are a much better alternative than a cupcake! As long so you’re getting micro nutrients elsewhere, this could be a good snack.

    • xdestitutex says:

but 100g of this “healthy” Nutri Grain Treats has 400kcal, wich is on a par with a chocolate cupcake from McDonalds (at least our version here).

So… yeah… i would suggest: If you really want to watch your caloric intake switch to something different or eat what you like, whether it’s a cupcake or these bars ^^

  4. Christopher says:

Wow, looks yummz. Anyone knows an online store I can E-buy these to be delivered?

  5. John W. says:

Many of the NutriGrain bars that I have seen contain 20% of the recommended daily amount of calcium, and/or a certain amount of fiber per serving. No such luck with these Bakery Delight bars, apparently, so it’s much closer to junk food, IMO.

  6. Mburke says:

Bought them several times, lately they are dried out. Not going to buy them anymore.

  7. Penny Pugh says:

My first encounter with the Lemon Crumb Cake and it was REALLY dry and hard to even swallow — not a fan!

  8. Sue Wheatley says:

These are the driest thing I have ever eaten. I was embarrassed to even offer them to my friends. I am sorry I purchased them they are awful!!

  9. Laura says:

Thought I’d try these when they had them marked down at Sams. Now I know why they were marked down. They look nothing like the picture, no crumbs on the top, they’re dry and taste aweful. Shouldn’t have wasted my money.
