Review: Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tarts & Do You Say Orange Crush or Crush Orange?

JFG Nation, let’s just get into this. I know you guys are itching to start the weekend. ME TOO! How many pizzas can I eat this weekend? We shall see.

Today’s junk food: Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tarts!!

Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tarts: The Money Shot

Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tarts: The Money Shot

These Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tarts have been all over social media, and apparently have been super polarizing. You either love these or you think they are an abomination. I myself said NOT when discussing these over on The Nosh Show. The reason? Who wants hot soda flavor? Not me.

By the way, can I get agreement that this box is a total fail when it comes to snack title? What am I reading here? “FROSTED CRUSH ORANGE CRUSH ORANGE.” What?? Plus, am I the only one who calls the soda “Orange Crush” and not “Crush Orange?” Let me know in the comments below.

You can toast these Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tarts or you can nuke them for three seconds. Which, incidentally, DOES NOTHING.

Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tarts smelled orange-y from the get go. They looked sort of ridiculous – that orange swirl was obviously too bright to be natural. Still I couldn’t think of any better design alternatives – a bright orange-only frosting would’ve been overkill.

The inside of these Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tarts was BRIGHT ORANGE and looked like grainy translucent deep orange jelly. I took a bite —– super orange-y. Tart. Very sweet. And….hmmm….good?

At the outset, let me say this. As I chewed the untoasted Pop-Tart, I realized that you really have to be a certain type of person to like these Pop-Tarts, which is probably why they are so polarizing. I am the type of person where I LOVE sour, tart, fruit flavor. Given the choice between fruit dessert and chocolate dessert, I go for fruit; e.g. I will gravitate towards lemon squares, key lime pie, Meyer lemon tart before I go for S’mores, red velvet, chocolate lava. I am the type who will make himself sick by eating endless Sour Patch Kids because Sour Patch Kids are great and I love pucker and sour sugar.

That is why, at first bite, these Pop-Tarts didn’t horrify me. The orange flavor was tart and bright and super-orange-y, like an orange version of a lemon square. Very tart. Actually sort of covered up the flavor of the untoasted pastry dough, which if never really experienced in a Pop-Tart before. I dug it.

I toasted one of the Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tarts to see if made any difference. Aroma wise, a little – smelled like a toasted Pop-Tart, with that familiar toaster pastry smell. A bit of orange.

I bit into a toasted Frosted Orange Crush Pop-Tart and…I loved it. I wanted to hate it. I did. It’s more fun to hate. But I can’t. I loved it.

It tasted like the best parts of what I love about hot lemon squares or Meyer lemon tart, just with a citrus-y orange flavor. VERY sweet – the innards were no longer grainy, having melted into a pure sugar goo. SUPER sweet, like I was eating melted orange Sour Patch Kids. But when eaten with the toasted Pop-Tart crust, I REALLY enjoyed it.

Did these taste like the soda? I guess – it did have that over the top orange sugar flavor. But the tart/sour really set it apart and surprised me. Where previously I objected to hot citrus flavor, I might’ve been wrong all along. Do the Pink Lemonade Pop-Tarts taste like lemon squares? I may need to get those.

Verdict: I shockingly enjoyed these. I can see why people don’t like them. I am not one of those people. If your palate is like mine, GO FOR THESE.

“didn’t horrify” I think you meant. They look gross. I can’t get into this at all. I do say Orange Crush too though.

  3. beeb says:

    orange crush

Course I’m from the south where Coke rules….and it’s coke for everything (then you say Sprite, or whatever flavor).

I think Coke bought Fanta…which has grape, orange

  4. Jimmy James says:

Oh damn, it actually IS “Crush Orange”. Like you, I’ve been saying “Orange/Grape Crush”.

  5. Technosquid says:

Older cans did say the flavor above the brand, but at some point they did start putting the flavor below the brand. I guess nobody really notices the weirdness until they write it out on a single line, like Crush™ Orange.

  6. Cliff Cherry says:

Haven’t found these yet locally (northern NJ) but my quest will continue. Thanks for the review; sounds worth a try. And agreed I was thrown by the press releases & such calling it Crush Orange, but I guess that’s the “official” name now although everyone I know calls it Orange Crush. A Pop Tart by any name still NOM!

  7. Mary Patricia Bachman says:

These taste exactly like the glucose syrup you have to drink if you’re being tested for gestational diabetes. Read into what you want.

I always called it Crush Soda. But yeah, I would’ve said “Orange Crush” if I said the full name of the soda.

  14. I do consider all of the ideas you have presented on your post.
They are very convincing and can definitely work.
Still, the posts are very brief for newbies. May you please prolong them a little from subsequent time?

    Thank you for the post.
