Review: Take 5 (Relaunch) & Old Candy Bars You Miss?

JFG Nation, Take 5 sent me a bunch of their candy bars to celebrate their new packaging relaunch. Now, I have to be honest – I remember eating Take 5’s a while back, but it took me a while to remember what it was. Google produced this video:

Yikes – that surfer riff is going to get stuck in my head for days.

Reminiscing about Take 5 had me thinking – what OTHER candy bars do I remember eating growing up that I haven’t seen in YEARS?

WHATCHAMACALLIT: I used to LOVE this candy bar, with its peanut-y crispy center and caramel, all covered in chocolate. This is a damn good candy bar. And every time I see one in the grocery aisle, I have that revelation of “OH YEAH! I USED TO LOVE THESE” ……and then I forget about them as soon as I leave the store. Even Wikipedia has to remind people, “However, despite the lack of attention the company gives it compared to other its products, the Whatchamacallit is still in production as of 2015.” Nice.

ZERO BAR: Does anyone else remember the Zero Bar? It was a combination of caramel, peanut and almond nougat covered with a layer of white fudge. Zero Bars are the hallmark of random vending machines everywhere. Anytime I see a Zero Bar in a machine, I always think, “HUH. How long has THAT been there???”

Those are the two that always come to mind. What about YOU, JFG Nation? Any old candy bars you remember that have either been discontinued or are just plain hard to find now? Let me know in the comments below!

Meanwhile, today’s junk food: TAKE 5!!

Take 5: The Money Shot

Take 5: The Money Shot

Take 5! Finally…like I said before, I ate these when they first came out but have not had them in sooooo long. Would I remember if I liked these? The ingredients are pretty straightforward: “a layered combination of five classic ingredients – pretzel, caramel, peanut butter and peanuts, covered in milk chocolate – in one salty-sweet, chewy-crunchy remixed snack.”

I wonder if when this candy was released in 2004 if the idea of salty pretzel to a candy bar was considered blasphemous or zany? Now that sort of flavor combo is pretty widely understood, right?

Apparently, this Take 5 relaunch is meant to target a younger audience, and the new look is only part of it. Take 5 is fully attacking the younger demographic on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr.

I dunno – are candy bars really “old” vs. “young”? The only old person candy I can think of are Werther’s Originals…and that weird ribbon candy in your grandma’s candy dish that has fused into a single fist-size sugar sculpture. The new packaging is really nice, but I feel like if you want to attract millennials, plaster emojis all over this thing.

Take 5 has always come like this: two separate large candy bar nuggets to a pack. Smells…chocolate-y.

I popped a nugget into my mouth and chewed and immediately thought, “OOOOHHH YYEAAAAAH – *NOW* I remember why I liked these!” The truth is, I’m not really going to hate any candy bar, but it takes a special combo to make me LOVE a candy bar. Take 5 has it.

take5-06

The base flavors of the Take 5 – chocolate and peanut butter and peanuts and caramel – these aren’t new, and you can pretty much imagine that all of these would be good together. It’s really the pretzel part of the Take 5 that elevates it to the next level. Rather than a rice crispy crunch, the pretzel gives the bar a more substantial chew – it’s more crunchy than anything else. And the SALTINESS of the pretzel is the star of the show – those big salt crystals popped all over the place while I chewed, giving all of the elements a salty/sweet element: salted peanuts, salted caramel, sea salt milk chocolate. As a result, the sweetness of the candy bar overall just exploded. I loved it. LOVED IT LOVED IT.

PURCHASED AT: Sent to me

COST: I dunno, what do candy bars go for these days…$1-$2?

Thoughts? Please comment below or hit me up on Twitter @junkfoodguy or LIKE my Facebook Page and message me there. I also have Google+!! Let’s hang out.

Sincerely,

Junk Food Guy

Since introduction, the Take 5 has been right in my to 5 candy bars, it’s an awesome combo.
I know it’s only been a year, but i did not see the ginger Twix during the holidays, those are truly fabulous.

    • Clementyne says:

I think the Gingerbread Twix are dead. I searched all over for them this past season.

  2. Cate says:

    Fifth Avenue

  3. Liz S. says:

The Zero bar used to be my favorite! White chocolate is so underrated. And I actually used to like those Nestle Toll House candy bars.

  4. Amy says:

Marathon Bar! Braided chocolate caramel goodness.

    • Lynda says:

Marathon bar was my absolute favorite! Why in the world did they stop making them!?!

  5. Eagles409 says:

    PB Maxx

  6. Anne Sutton says:

    PB MAX!!

  7. Josh says:

Zero Bar may be more of a southern thing I guess. They’re all over the place down here.

  8. T says:

I miss the old Cadbury eggs that were bigger and actually had Cadbury chocolate instead of Hershey’s. 🙁

  9. Marc P says:

    The Wonder Ball!

While on soapbox, where are all the varieties of Charleston Chews?

  10. Heather says:

Whatchamacallit and Nutrageous were two of my childhood favorites, but I can usually find those if I look hard enough. I really miss Reese’s Crunchy Cookie Cups and Strawberried Peanut Butter M&M’s!

    • Nate says:

RCCC were the best of all time. Only had them once, and have been craving another ever since.

  11. MattySD says:

Whatchamacallit and Zero are still widely available where I live in San Diego so I was surprised you mentioned them in past tense, perhaps they aren’t national any more.

Amy – if you loved Marathon then head to Amazon and buy Cadbury’s Curly Wurly – it’s essentially the same thing (in fact Marathon was launched by Mars in ’73 to copy Curly Wurly which arrived on the US market a year before.)

  12. Tenko says:

Take 5 is one of my faves. I miss Necco Air Bars. They’re still made, but they’re hard to find here.

    • Mike N. says:

Tenko – Do you mean the Necco Sky bar? I haven’t seen one of those forever, but they’re definitely unique.

I also miss the Reggie Bar!

  13. Platter’s orange chocolate. We come back with no less than 5lbs (not counting sponge candy) every trip to western NY.

  14. Michelle says:

I wish they’d bring back the Seven Up candy bar from the 70s. It was like a mini box of chocolates in a bar.

The Take 5 candy bar is one of my faves.

  15. Chris says:

    Bar None !!!

    Also PB Maxx was incredible!

  16. Robert says:

Whatchamacallit is something I usually only see in Valero Corner Stores. Nobody else seems to have even heard of it

  17. Surfer Sandman says:

Reeses Crunchy Cookie Cups would be nice to have again. I tried the new Snickers Crisper but it’s not as good as their prior effort at a crispy bar.

  18. Clementyne says:

Take 5 are awesome. I buy the fun-size bags at Target (in the old red packaging).

A hard to find favorite is the dark chocolate version of the Rocky Road bar. I only see them in the mile-long checkout line at Fry’s Electronics.

Oh and Hershey Mint Chocolate bars were great, don’t see them anymore either.

  19. Sheila says:

I look forward to Halloween every year mostly because of the big bags of tiny Take 5 bars. Yummy!

  20. Mike N. says:

I also miss the Chocolatey PayDay, although Reese’s Nutrageous is pretty similar and very tasty,

  21. Fred says:

I love chocolate covered pretzels. Something about that salty chocolatey flavor is incredibly addictive. I guess Take % was ahead of the curve on that one!

  22. Sylvia says:

The Zero bar is always at Walmart. I’ve never seen it before or elsewhere. The Un-No bar I got from a friend; have never seen or heard of it before.
