Review: Cinnamon Bun Oreo & THE OREO WONDER VAULT

JFG Nation, any junk food / snack food reviewer worth their salt covers each new Oreo flavor like it’s the MLB trade deadline or the announcing of the Oscar nominees. And as social media viral potential grows, food companies are trying to capture the same buzz as when Adele sings in a car with James Corden. It’s hard for food companies though – the Lay’s Do Us A Flavor contest, which is super successful, had approximately 14.4 million entries two years ago according to this article. As a matter of comparison, this video of a cat wearing a shark costume riding a Roomba has almost 12 millions views. Huh huh….cat.

So yeah – when people ask, “WHY IS OREO COMING OUT WITH SO MANY NEW FLAVORS???” the answer is simple: because they are trying, like every other company in the world, to stay relevant. And I for one don’t blame them. I EMBRACE IT. I mean, Chobani comes out with a new flavor every week yet you don’t see people screaming, “DAMNIT I JUST LIKE THE PLAIN TART FLAVOR WHY ARE THEY MIXING IN GRANOLA???”

To that end, Oreo recently sent me a box:

Like the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey, I was super curious what this thing was. Is this a trick from one of those Saw movies?

cannibunoreo-B

And what the hell is a WonderVault??? If you’ll remember, Oreo debuted the WONDERFILLED campaign a couple years ago and sent me the Marshmallow Crispy Oreos and the Cookie Dough Oreos to commemorate the occasion.

cannibunoreo-C

So now there’s something called the WONDER VAULT. BUT WHAT IS IT.

cannibunoreo-D

I opened the box, and this video appeared: (and by box I meant email box, and by appeared I meant I cut and pasted the embed code below…)

WHAT THE WHAT. From the video, you can guess what was inside this box:

BOOM! Cinnamon Bun Oreos! And the re-release of last year’s Red Velvet Oreos!!!

cannibunoreo-G

MMMMM RED VELVET. Read my review from last year here.

Anyways, let’s get to all the promotional language that came with the cookies:

cannibunoreo-F

“What is the OREO Wonder Vault you ask? It’s the epicenter of OREO cookie exploration where new OREO treats are released year round, from now-classics (hello Birthday Cake!) to the quirkiest launches (calling all Marshmallow Crispy lovers); but more than that, it’s where OREO collects and stores everything that’s needed to bring cookie creations to life – from the inspiration to the ingredients.”

“Red Velvet Flavored OREO cookies will be back by popular demand, and this time you won’t have to hide away your stash because this fan favorite will be available as an ongoing offering. Find Red Velvet OREO cookies nationwide beginning January 18.”

cannibunoreo-01

“Also debuting as an everyday addition to the OREO lineup on January 18th are Cinnamon Bun Flavored OREO cookies. Featuring a first-ever cinnamon-flavored cookie with a Cinnamon Bun and frosting flavored creme, these new cookies deliver our take on a fresh-from-the-oven cinnamon bun.”

Well, ok then! You can get these cookies everywhere RIGHT NOW. What’s even MORE exciting is that Red Velvet and Cinnamon Bun will apparently be a REGULAR offering – these ain’t limited editions, folks. THESE ARE PART OF THE OREO FAMILY NOW. I bet you Walmart has them. They have everything, those cookie overlords.

cannibunoreo-02

Cinnamon Bun Oreos has a cinnamon cookie which, according to my count, is the fifth cookie type Oreo has introduced (chocolate, golden, red velvet, graham, and now cinnamon). It contains cinnamon bun flavored creme, which makes me extra excited – why limit the cinnamon flavor to just the cookie? If this is truly gonna reach Cinnabon epic-ness, then that cinnamon bun flavor has to be EVERYWHERE.

cannibunoreo-03

Haha. I enjoy word play.

cannibunoreo-05

Let’s see, what’s in these Cinnamon Bun Oreos? Sugar, sugar, sugar……yep, it’s all there!

cannibunoreo-06

Opening these Cinnamon Bun Oreos, I took a big sniff, and the aroma was unmistakable – it was the smell of strolling through the mall and walking by a Cinnabon. It was the cloyingly sickeningly sweet smell of cinnamon buns. Holy moly.

cannibunoreo-07

The wafer cookie of this Cinnamon Bun Oreo was speckled with cinnamon. Eating the wafer by itself, the cookie is sweet, but sort of graham-like – they reminded me a LOT of the French Toast Goldfish Grahams, with a hint less maple. But it had that same sort of of doughy cookie flavor, with a decent spice of cinnamon. Snickerdoodle-esque, if you will.

cannibunoreo-08

The creme of these Cinnamon Bun Oreos was NOT like a standard Oreo creme. For one, it was a LOT gummier – thicker, and when you tried to spread it between the tongue and the roof of the mouth, it felt a lot more like icing than creme. VERY strong vanilla flavor, very much like the icing on a cinnamon bun. Very very sweet, and has a hint of cinnamon itself.

cannibunoreo-09

Eaten together, there’s no doubt that these Cinnamon Bun Oreos taste exactly like cinnamon buns. Just as sweet, just as cinnamon-y, but crunchy. These are crunchy cinnamon buns. The flavor profile was accurate and really really tasty. I could have used even MORE cinnamon, but that’s being nitpicky – these were cinnamon-y like Cinnamon LIFE cereal….drenched in icing. These cookies had that same “Am I tasting the icing in my nose??” flavor I get when eating an actual cinnamon bun.

Could Oreo have gone the Snickerdoodle route? Sure but that would have been too easy – making the flavor Cinnamon Bun allowed the flavor mad scientists to tweak the creme and really come up with something specific. I liked these a lot – the best Oreos are the ones that don’t try to force or recreate a new flavor. Gingerbread, Pumpkin Spice, Marshmallow Crispy, and now…Cinnamon Bun. Thank you, Wonder Vault.

PURCHASED AT: Sent to me, soon to be everywhere!

COST: $4.49 retail, but I’m gonna guess ~$3.00 in most stores

I will beef about new flavors when they push my favorites off the shelves. Cookie Dough Pop tarts are getting hard to find now with all these other new flavors out there.

  2. Marc P says:

I am one who will NEVER complain about new flavors. Why complain? Just don’t buy them. Its like the fans that complain that their team spent too much on a contract for a player when there is no salary cap. What harm is really done if they have deep pockets (disclaimer: spoken from a Yankee fan).

Honest suggestion for both sweet goldfish and oreos, take after the Lay’s contest and offer that to folks. I would have to guess that this would create a plethora of buzz and maybe some tasty flavors. Adding the contest element would even make it better.

It’s more of “I’m tired of hearing about stupid Oreos in the places I hang out all the time,” etc. I’m Oreo-fatigued & I don’t want / need 8+ new Oreo flavors a year; especially for such an overrated & dry product.
Well Yankee fan, us non-Yankees fans have to deal with the fact that our teams don’t have infinite pockets & moves are limited. Would we like Cespedes? Sure. But at $22M+ a year? It cripples future rosters & I am so not one of these “buy ALL IN / gotta win NOW” because I’ve seen it fail too many times from a compulsive gambler GM who is a poor evaluator of talent & a horrible drafter. I’m fine with rebuilding years. The GM however is not & it’s frustrating. Shouldn’t even have a job.

With all this secretive talk of the vault, etc…am I the only one seeing Willy Wonka in my mind? I’d love to see Oreo do something along the lines of an oatmeal cookie.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JF GAL!!!!! I hope the JF Guy has something amazing planned. I hope you took the day off and are being pampered at a cozy warm spa somewhere!

Cant wait to try these. And I never found the red velvet ones the first time around anyway so i have a couple to look forward to trying.

  5. P.L. Isley says:

It’s so cool that you get cookies in the mail. I couldn’t find the Red Velvet Oreos last year, maybe I’ll have more luck this year.

    Happy birthday JFGal!!

  6. T says:

Thank you for this! I kept seeing things about the Cinnamon Bun flavor but there was never anything saying when they were going to come out! Can’t wait to try them!

  7. Eunice Kim says:

I heard that these flavors came out today in the morning at work.
So what did I do like the fatass I am?
I ran to the grocery store right at 12 during my lunch break.

Excited that I could actually find it, I ripped open the two boxes and was soon disappointed with both red velvet and cinnamon cookie oreo… Nothing tasted like I wanted it to….

So then I just went back to my cube with a sad face.

  8. Technosquid says:

Seems that many of these limited flavors are all too limited. I hope these remain available for more than a month.

  9. Elisa says:

I never saw the Red Velvet Oreos either so it’s interesting to see them back.

Speaking of Adele, the day her new album was released, Enya’s “Dark Sky Island” came out too. It’d been 7 years for a new album by Enya.

  10. Sarah says:

What is wrong with a person to actually take the effort to type out that they have negative feelings about Oreo’s!?!?!? Lighten up and enjoy people! I am a foodie so by nature I am always interested in new products and get excited to see new versions of items. Thank you for the great review!

    • MP says:

What’s with the reply to the negative Oreo reply?? Always loving everything just because?? When I hear / read “Oreo” I cringe & go “not again!” Yes, bah humbug! Get off the lawn, Oreo!
Judging by the comments here & in general, it seems like most people can’t even find half of the limited time Oreos, so it’s almost pointless.

  11. Sheila says:

Found these at Wal-Mart today. Gotta say, totally underwhelmed. The cookie has an odd texture and not much in the way of cinnamon flavor. It’s more like a scent in the background.

  12. Mike says:

I bought these last week and ate most of the cookies in one sitting. If you can’t taste the cinnamon, maybe it’s time to see a neurologist. A fading sense of smell (which is directly related to taste) may indicate diminishing mental acuity. Anyway, this is the best flavor they’ve made since the peanut-butter ones, so I’m glad that it will be one of the core flavors now. I still miss the cookie-dough ones, though; if those had been marketed as having a coffee or mocha filling, which was what they really had, they probably would have been a bigger hit. I think the people who complain about new Oreo flavors aren’t that fond of cookies in general, and that makes me wonder why they would even come to a site like this in the first place.

    • MP says:

“and that makes me wonder why they would even come to a site like this in the first place.”
You’re kidding, right? I’ve been coming to this site for years; long before Oreo decided they were a big deal & to oversaturate the market with limited time flavors that are 20% less typical product but charge 30% more. There’s other snacks besides Oreo (thank god) & I also come here for Eric’s daily blog posts. It’s not just Oreos; if some company kept coming out with new flavors 6+ times a year & it was a constant topic of discussion, that would cause product fatigue too.

  13. Beeb says:

like P.L. Isley, I too could never track down the elusive Red Velvet Oreos, even at that horrible place called Wal-mart. i was actually at Target yesterday, and they didn’t have Red Velvet Oreos. And I live in GA, hell the south invented Red Velvet cake, but I’ve yet to see these damn Oreos. Here’s hoping I find them this year. I don’t like most Red Velvet ‘snack’ items as they just don’t live up to my expectations, but based upon JFG’s description, I want to try them!

  14. Laurie says:

Can they bring back the coconut? They were our all time favorite!!!
