FOOD FACEOFF: French Toast Crunch vs. Sprinkled Donut Crunch (Which Cereal Did Non-Cereal Better?)

JFG Nation, I wanted to do a quick post today to get some feedback from YOU, the people. The peeps. The eaters and dreamers who follow this here blog. Primarily, I want to know which cereal you think did non-cereal better? My English teacher would cringe at that last sentence.

The contenders: French Toast Crunch (left) and Sprinkled Donut Crunch (right):

French Toast Crunch vs. Sprinkled Donut Crunch: The Money Shot

French Toast Crunch vs. Sprinkled Donut Crunch! The ultimate cereal-designed-to-taste-like-another-breakfast-food face-off! Now, both of these has been around for some time – French Toast Crunch, after years of hiatus, came back to the production line in December of 2014. Sprinkled Donut Crunch started to appear on the shelves in early February of 2014…maybe even a bit earlier. So we’re talking about two cereals that all of you should’ve had ample opportunity to try and enjoy and get high off the sugar of.

French Toast Crunch smelled like maple syrup and looked like little tiny egg-dipped pieces of French Toast. The taste, I thought, was pretty spot on – sugary and carb-y, with just enough cinnamon and maple flavor to think “YES – this is French Toast in cereal form.” It was light and fluffy and crispy.

Sprinkled Donut Crunch, meanwhile, smelled like a blast of corn syrup to my face. The box smelled soooo sweet I was shocked. Each little ring was coated with glaze and sprinkle with colored sprinkled, indeed making each cereal piece sort of look like a mini donut. The taste was pretty intense – super sweet, and indeed gave me that glazed donut feeling. It was like eating a bowl of mini-Entenmann’s or mini-TastyKake glazed mini donuts.

So, in the battle of French Toast Crunch vs. Sprinkled Donut Crunch, my take on which cereal did non-cereal better? For me, the answer was clearly Sprinkled Donut Crunch. Despite being almost sickeningly sweet, I felt like the cereal truly captured the sugary sweetness of a glazed donut and that taste of glaze and donut in near-perfect fashion. I WAS tasting donut. I love French Toast Crunch, but I don’t automatically think French Toast each time I’m eating it; I think cinnamon, maple, a bit of egg-iness. There was no mistake with Sprinkled Donut Crunch. I also needed to visit a dentist after eating it, so…WIN!

What about YOU, JFG Nation? Which do you prefer? Which do you think did non-cereal better? Which would you eat again? Let me know in the comments below. No parameters here – you can argue any side of any cereal. You can argue something totally different than me; go for the aesthetic, the health factor, the non-health factor, whatever. Tell me in the comments which YOU like better, and why.

Talk to you tomorrow!

Did you ever have one of those conversations about what your last meal would be??…my answer is always Donut Crunch, no milk. This is how much I love sugary cereals, especially this one. So sweet and super crunchy!

  2. Marc P says:

Genius. Cereal and compeition. Sign me up JFG! Right after my hear.
I felt let down by these two because of expectations. These were surely not on the caliber of the retired WAFFLE CRISP.

  3. Devin H. says:

I’ve bought a box of Sprinkled Donut Crunch almost every month since it came out, so I think you know which one I’m siding with. I seriously have no qualms saying it’s my favorite cereal of all-time.

I can’t remember ever trying French Toast Crunch when it originally came out (that’s not to say I never tried back then, but that maybe it wasn’t very memorable), but I tried some recently and thought it was okay. Nothing great, but I might buy it again every now and then. I certainly don’t see what the hype is about though, as there are plenty of other cereals I’d rather see brought back.

  4. Caitlin says:

I completely agree; I love the sprinkled donut crunch cereal! Chapstick has a cake batter lip balm on the market, and I actually think it tastes just like that, which is amazing!

  5. Brittany says:

I was seriously disappointed in both of these cereals. I was SO excited for the Donut Crunch to come out and ran out to buy a box. I love all cereal, the sweeter the better, and donuts are probably my #1 favorite food. I couldn’t even eat it. I thought it was just terrible. I opened the box on the way to my car and took in the sweet smell and grabbed a handful and almost cried from the disappointment. I gave the box to my husband to eat.

Frosted Toast Crunch and Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch were my favorites 🙂

  6. Brit says:

I have yet to try the “donut crunch,” but it does look good! I thought the french toast crunch was merely “meh.” Sugar cookie Toast Crunch on the other hand was EXCELLENT! I miss it already! :.(

  7. Heather H. says:

French Toast Crunch was one of my favorite cereals as a kid. I was so excited when they brought it back, but I don’t think it was as good as I remembered it being. Maybe I just built it up too much in my mind all those years. Sprinkled Donut Crunch is good and highly addictive, but I grew tired of it very quickly. Even though it was super sweet, it still had a weird saltiness that was hard to get past.

All of that aside, both of these cereals are adorable as far as looks go. When I was a kid, I used to make tiny peanut butter sandwiches with French Toast Crunch.

@Heather: Hmmm, so you have the perspective of someone who has tried both old FT Crunch and new FT Crunch! Disappointing that it didn’t live up to your memory 🙁

  8. Jason says:

I definitely like French Toast Crunch over Sprinkled Donut Crunch. Donut Crunch is waaayyy too sweet and destroyed the roof of my mouth when I ate it! I wanted to love it because I absolutely love donuts, but one box was enough for me!

  9. Theresa says:

    Waffle Crisp forever.

  10. Johnny says:

Sprinkled Donut Crunch for me. Yeah they are really sugary and likely horrible for you but that’s why I go to the gym for 10 hours a week and eat good 95% of the rest of the time. Come at me bro… err…Cap N’

Now I know what that taste was on the French Toast Cruch, egg! Not a huge fan of FTC though. They’re alright but I wouldn’t buy them a second time.

  11. Mike N. says:

I wind up buying myself a box of ‘kid’ cereal maybe twice a year. I unfortunately wasn’t a big fan of the French Toast Crunch; it was good, but one dimensional. I currently have a box of Cocoa Puffs in my cupboard, and they still rock.

  12. Peter LM says:

    JFG! Excellent question: challenge accepted.

Both cereals capture the essence of their respective origins. For me, the deciding factor is the shape and texture. FTC is nicely formed, and easy to chew. Donut crunch is studded with colorful sprinkles which are like daggers to the roof of my mouth. Winner? FTC.
