Junk Food Nation, we discussed these New Extra Toasty Cheez-It on a recent episode of the Nosh Show, and it seemed like Marvo and I was alone in thinking these were going to be good. I’m a HUGE Cheez-It fan, and I admitted that I thought these were a good idea! I’m not one of the many people who apparently requested this flavor from Cheez-It directly, but I had to admit – whenever I found that random one or two burnt Cheez-Its in my regular box of Cheez-Its, I got excited. When I opened this box up and saw all these darkly burnt orange Cheez-Its, I was giddy. Smelling the box, there was no discernible different than a normal box of Cheez-Its – it was cheesy and smelled like crackers. I popped a bunch into my  outh and chewed and YESSSSSSS THESE WERE GOOD. What’s the ACTUAL difference in flavor? Admittedly, it’s subtle – it’s kind of like asking what’s the difference between toast that is made on the 4 setting versus the 7 setting. There’s just a tad bit more TOASTED flavor – the cheese has a slight deeper taste, the finish off the back of the cracker is a little more bitter (and I mean ever so slight – like how the finish on toast is sort of bitter). The flakiness and cheddar flavors of these Cheez-Its is very similar to regular ones. It’s more that as I chewed, I got more toast notes emerging from the dough than just the standard super cheesy notes that I usually get with normal Cheez-Its.

I liked these. A lot. They will not gross you out, they do not taste burnt. They are regular Cheez-Its with a bit of additional toasty flavor that I think is definitely noticeable. Yum yum yum in my tum.

We gotta start a new trend of getting companies to make their foods the way we all like them. Like… extra fizzy Coke.

Bags of sour patch kids without the gummies – just the sour sugar

Damp cotton candy – just the crunchy stuff

  2. Alek says:

I second with Josh that sour patch kids company should sell a special limited edition of the special sugar.

Companies should make special limited edition based on high requests. Whole bag of white mystery airheads, cookie dough that you can eat directly without the eggs and sold in refrigerated cases, and bigger size pop rocks bags (why the hell do they sell in the tiny bags)

  3. Deb M says:

Alek: At Whole Foods (and maybe other specialty shops), there is a brand you can buy of cookie dough without eggs, ready to be eaten. It’s in the freezer section – I tried it at a Chocolate expo, and its really tasty

I bought a box of these, SO good. Original will always be #1 in my heart, but toasty is definitely a 2nd option, or a switch up for my taste buds.

I eat regular cookie dough uncooked. That “do not eat” warning and the eggs be damned.. it’s delicious. All I need is the tube of Toll House cookie dough and a spoon and go to town.

    • Alek says:

Toll House needs to make an egg free kind and people can enjoy cookie dough.

    • MP says:

@ Alex – I just mix flour, sugar, brown sugar, butter, salt & a little water. Maybe some vanilla extract and/or chocolate chips; kept in the fridge or freezer. Sometimes into little balls so it’s an ice cream topping.

  5. SA says:

I have to disagree. The Toasty Cheeze Its are not burnt enough. If you ask me all they did was add some coloring to give it the apperance of an over cooked cracker. I say, burn them!

    • junkfoodguy says:

@SA: CHAR EM UP WITH A BLOWTORCH!

    • LI!I1i says:

Agree with SA. Very slightly better imo. According to Kellogg’s they’re baked a little longer, and while they do come out a little darker, it’s moreless uniform and they’re not as dark as the stragglers in a box of regular Cheeze-Its.

This is exactly why I hate the corporate decision-making process. It’s like the “brownie brittle”, made from overbaked soybean oil instead of overbaked butter. It’s only vaguely reminiscient of what you’re looking for, without actually being anything like it.

    • junkfoodguy says:

LI!l1i: maybe if I lay a bunch out in the oven for a while, they’re achieve TRUE toastiness!

  6. Radium says:

I bought these on your recommendation because I love toasted cheese anything, and holy f these are delicious!

  7. Holly says:

    LOVE THEM!!!!

  8. Jake says:

You know what, these do not taste like the burnt ones that were so rare in the regular box of Cheez-its. People were requesting that special taste, and these just don’t taste like those! They’re good, but they’re not what I was hoping for and am disappointed 🙁 Does anyone else agree, they’re just not the same?

Holy Cow, , I thought I was the only weirdo obsessing about toasty Cheez-It!
Growing up, when Sunshine Baking made them, I would regularly search through the entire box for,the burnt ones, My whole family would race to,the box to see who got to it first.
So when the Extra toasty came on the scene, wow, mind blown!
First box was a dream~come~true, plenty of dark edges and dark spots, they tasted deeper and darker.
Now, though, getting a good toasty box is totally hit-or-miss. Some boxes claiming to be the Extra toasty are just like a regular box, no increase in toastiness or color, and some even with a weird hint of spiciness instead.
I’ve called Cheez-it (Kellogg’s) to complain twice. It’s like buying sour cream and onion potato chip and there’s no sour cream onion taste.
I have two boxes side-by-side right now, bought at different retailers, both
extra -toasty on the label. They are worlds apart in color and taste. One is great and full of really dark ones, the other box not, and is now designated for my dogs (they love Cheez-It’s too!
I feel cheated when I spend the money to buy the Extra and don’t get it.

I’m obsessed with them too. I’m an avid cheez it eater for many years. I’ve never strayed from original. Until I saw the Toasty ones. OMG. I now buy 6 boxes at a time when I find them. Sometimes I count it as my dinner. I’ve occasionally used them as a side dish on a meal. I once brought them as an appetizer to a family gathering, and they were a hit. For Christmas, my family wrapped up about 5 boxes of extra toasty cheez its. I couldn’t have been happier. .

  11. Rosa Higgins says:

I think the extra toasty cheez it’s are the best thing the company has ever done. The only problem is I can’t stop eating them! They’re wonderful!

  12. Nikki G says:

I thought I was the only one out there that loved the few slightly burnt cheese it’s I would find in the box. LOVE I! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! I hope Toastys won’t be a temporary thing.

  13. Frank johnson says:

The quality control on the toasty isn’t that great; some boxes are little different than regular Cheezits and some boxes are VERY toasty, even black around the edges, Personally i prefer the “black around the edges” Cheezits. Hopefully they’ll come out with an extra toasty Cheezit.

  14. Emh says:

OK SO THEY BURNED A BATCH BY ACCIDENT AND INSTEAD OF TRADING THEM THEY BURNED MORE AND SOLD THEM AS EXTRA CRUNCHY. UGH THERE BURNT BURNT GROSS WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER

  15. Jeff L says:

Why would they have gone down this route? I ate some last night, and they tasted burnt. They tasted burnt.

  16. Marlene Brown says:

Where is the QUALITY CONTROL staff? First time, I LOVED THEM. I was buying them every time I went to the store so I had extras standing by. As time passed, I found the quality control team must have been asleep. Comparing one box to another is very disappointing. I love the crunchy texture. BUT one box of darkly toasted (with nothing else) is not a winner. I have thrown away about 3 out of 4 boxes I’ve bought. I prefer a box that has some regular and some toasted. But I like it sort of toasty and NOT almost burnt and brown. My idea is that they should mix the batches. If one is too toasty, then mix that in with others that are less toasty. Or, train the FACTORY STAFF to really, really, really be sure to bake them exactly the same each time. One of my boxes had a number of pieces that had come off the slicer in gobs, which would include either two or four very fat and poor tasting (not cooked enough) pieces. So for me, I’ll keep buying the Extra Toasty if they can be consistent. But if I have to throw away this many boxes, I think I’ll find something else to snack on. I’m rooting for a continuation with improvements. KELLOG’S KEEP THEM COMING!
