Review: Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans & Underrated Chain Restaurants & Fast Food Establishments?

Junk Food Nation, it should surprise no one that I am a lover of all things food. While I haven’t eaten it all, I have eaten a LOT – from garbage plates to fois gras. While I blog about junk food on here, I’ve said it before – I enjoy healthy food too (c’mon, the flavor of a fresh grapefruit is AWESOME), and I love going to cool restaurants and new food joints (driving excessive miles to go on a foodie adventure is one of my favorite things to do).

But my tastes are not limited to local joints and shelf items – I also appreciate the chain restaurant, the fast food joint, the quick stop at the gas station. Some of my friends would never go into a Denny’s; I say BRING IT ON THE MOONS OVER MY HAMMY. Cheddar biscuits from Red Lobster? ONE BASKET AINT ENOUGH. Papa John’s pizza? AS LONG AS I CAN DOUSE THE ENTIRE THING IN GARLIC SAUCE.

I agree with many of my friends – there are some chains whose quality is very poor that I will ALWAYS avoid, that have no saving grace. While some chains have a consistency which is hard to beat (I love you, Chipotle), others have consistently BAD quality. But this is, in my opinion, just because the chain itself sucks, NOT because bad quality is inherent to a chain.

So my question to YOU, Junk Food Nation, is what are some completely underrated food items at chains and fast food joints out there?  Things like the cheddar biscuits from Red Lobster – while I don’t mind eating endless buckets of so-so frozen fried shrimp, it’s really those biscuits that keep me coming back. Or maybe it’s one variety of pancakes at IHOP? Sure, the syrup pitchers ALWAYS need wiping down (ALWAYS WHY SO STICKY), but maybe the Rooty Tooty Fresh n Fruity Pancakes get you all hot and bothered.

Let me know in the comments below – especially if it’s a chain I haven’t heard of, then I’d REALLY like to know. If there a chain out there that you think gets a bad rep but has one thing that you LOVE? Tell me.

Today’s junk food: Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans!!

Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans

Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans: The Money Shot

Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans are not new (apparently they debuted back in 2008?? Where have *I* been?) but this was the first time *I’d* ever seen them. I wanted to review them for two reasons: first, I have’t done a ton of Easter candy on this blog yet, and second, I LOVE NERDS. I mean, Nerds Ropes are some of my favorite things EVER.  Gummy string embedded with crunchy sugary Nerds?  HEAVEN.

So when I saw jelly beans coated in Nerds, I jumped at the chance to eat these. “Jelly beans covered in a nerdalicious shell.” You have my attention, Wonka.

Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans

Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans

Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans are made of *surprise surprise* lots of different types of sugar, colorings and other chemicals. And yes – do not feed these to your less than 4-yr-old kids. *I* have a tendency to eat too fast and choke, so I am well aware of the dangers here.

BTW, this is what Wiki says about these:

  • Nerd Jelly Beans, produced for Easter, are jelly beans with a coating of carnauba wax, which makes them taste like Nerds.

MMMMM carnauba wax.

Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans

WHOOOOOOA. These Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans are WEIRD looking. I mean, they DO look like the front of the package, but when live and in person, these remind me a lot of the random candy you’d find in one of those shady glass coin-slot gumball machines that were usually stationed by the exit of your grocery store. One quarter gets you a handful of half broken hard candy and the suspicious candy dust from the metal slot flap. Gross.

As an aside, I haven’t seen any of those shady gumball machines anymore. Have vendors just decided that kids don’t care about shady candy anymore? Because all I see positioned by the grocery stores exits NOW is Redbox. REDBOX EVERYWHERE. I guess these days, given a choice, kids would rather have The Box Trolls on DVD than five crappy old Runts.

When I opened this bag, there was no fruity smell – these actually smelled a LOT like Nerds, if you’re a Nerds aficionado. They smelled sweet but had that semi-stale hard candy shell smell.

Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans

I crunched on a bunch of these Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans and…hmmmm. These were different than I expected.

I was expecting to have the same type of experience as I had with Nerds Ropes. With Nerds Ropes, I got to have the Nerds candy crunch I was familiar with, those same bursts of tang and rock sugar flavor, with the added texture of a gummy rope inside. And, since I love gummy candy, it was a win win.

I really enjoy jelly beans, so that’s what I wanted from these – that same burst of tang and candy crunch plus the nice chew of a jelly bean.  What I got instead was a tiny bit of a disappointment. While the candy shell did crunch, it didn’t have that same feel as regular Nerds – the shell chewed easily and fell apart in my mouth. Yeah, it was crispy, but the texture overall was a not the same.

Flavor-wise, the Nerds flavor was there. It did taste like Nerds candy surrounding a basic jelly bean. The initial tang flavor of the Nerds candy, however, was muted a bit by the jelly bean – the inside jelly bean wasn’t flavored any way except “sweet,” and so it wasn’t like the Grape Nerds shell was highlighting a grape jelly bean, etc. As a result, the Nerds flavor I wanted was quickly dampened with each chew. I wish they had used specific fruit jelly beans. Imagine this shell on the outside of Starburst jelly beans??  MAGIC.

The different colors definitely had different flavors. Purple was definitely grape-y, while orange-yellow-green…I *THINK* there was a difference in flavor, but it was so close it might as well be right up there with the whole blue/black white/gold controversy. I guess the yellow tasted the most sour, but that could’ve just been me on a sugar high.

Overall, these were just OK to me; I think I’ll stick with Nerds Ropes and Starburst Jelly Beans. They didn’t taste bad, but they didn’t live up to my expectations.

I can’t help loving Taco Bell. Many of my friends are scandalized by the thought of it, but the Cheesy Gordita Crunch is really good. Soft, crunchy, cheesy, tangy. Delish. Get it with a nacho cheese Dorito shell inside and yes, ma’am!

  2. Jessica says:

It seems like every chain restaurant gets rid of the menu item I crave. I still crave Taco Bell’s OLD Cantina bowl daily…that cilantro dressing! Both Wendy’s and Burger King Ditched the salads with Avocado Ranch. Subway dumped Buffalo Chicken. Outback Steakhouse dropped their sweet potato fries.

However, I do NOT view Cheddar Bay Biscuits as an underrated food item. Especially since they also dropped my favorite salad dressing AND changed the recipe for the Tilapia in a bag, there is absolutely no other reason to go to Red Lobster. And since I have the recipe…

    • Kaitlyn says:

same here! i loved wendy’s boneless asian wings, they cut those. kfc bone-in bbq wings – so much better than their boneless – cut. more recently, outback’s pork tenderloin and chick-fil-a changed their grilled chicken. it’s so sad.

Oh to relive the family road trips of my childhood….I’d go to Friendly’s just for a happy ending sundae and a friendly frank! And while it’s gone downhill in recent years, I love the hot fudge cake or strawberry pie at Shoney’s. And Picadilly yeast rolls have always been yummy to me.

  4. Anne Sutton says:

Oh you can also get those cheddar bay biscuits from red lobster in the grocery store now. Costco has a huge box you can even buy. I’ve made them, and they taste like the original.
I also forgot hash browns at Waffle House…

  5. Jill says:

Why not Wonka make a all banana bag of runts?

  6. Jenn says:

Chain restaurants: I have so many feelings.
    1. Tim Horton’s chicken stew in a bread bowl. This is a Canadian chain that has slowly been making its way into America. I’m from the midwest where there are Tim’s a plenty. In college I survived off the chicken stew in a bread bowl. It was like, five dollars and really hearty and so so very good. Tim’s are open 24 hours so that 3 a.m. post bar food run would usually end up at Taco Bell, making your hangover have superpowers but when they opened the Tim’s, man…nothing squelches the beer voms quite like a bowl of stew and a pound of bread. It disappeared for close to a decade, leaving me devastated and confused. It’s back now. Oh, and I also hear they sell donuts, coffee and sandwiches.

    2. The Wendy’s original taco salad. What. Happened? It used to be a salad, you’d get small cup of chili with it, some dorito-y taco chips, and a packet of sour cream. It was all you needed! It was delicious and allowed me to rationalize buying it four times a week because it had “salad” in the name. I miss you, original taco salad. I miss you hard.

    3. Five Guys burgers. That’s it. Just. Yep.

    4. Qdoba’s queso. and therefore any burrito you put that queso on. Is it even possible to not eat their queso? I must conduct more tests.

    5. Noodles & Company Wisconsin mac and cheese. Add meatballs. I like to add a little extra cheese sauce too. But really it’s totally fine on its own.

    6. The entire Shake Shack menu

    7. Panda Express Orange Chicken. Why do other Asian restaurants even try to make orange chicken? It’s never going to be as good. It is impossible.

    8. Olive Garden’s chicken gnocchi soup.

    9. Jimmy Johns #4 Turkey Tom sandwich with sprouts and provolone.

    10. the following things at Panera: iced green tea, mac and cheese, cinnamon crunch bagel.

    • MP says:

@ Jenn – Couldn’t you just buy a salad (even a cheap one) & a small chili & add your own chips & sour cream?

    • Jenn says:

Well sure, buying all of the ingredients is an option, but it was more convenient and cheaper for them to just have it on the menu for me!

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Jenn: Noodles & Co. actually came up a lot in discussions with friends. Everyone chided it for being a chain, and then secretly revealed that they LOVED IT. Great pick

  7. MP says:

The only thing I liked at Taco Bell was the Lava sauce Volcano taco. I love the fish & tartar sauce from Long John Silvers. I think Popeye’s in general is underrated.

Personally I really like the Wendy’s crispy chicken sandwich, Jr cheeseburger, the Double Stack with cheese, onions, Taco Bell Fire sauce mixed with mayo, the Jr cheeseburger deluxe, the Jr bacon cheeseburger & all their chicken wraps. It’s all very cheap & a combo of any two fills me up. When it comes to burgers, I prefer thin patties to thick ones & a close cheese-to-meat ratio. I usually never spend more than $4 on a fast food meal.

Speaking of Red Lobster biscuits, they’ve totally cut back on the cheese. I know a much better cheddar biscuit from a recipe (don’t laugh) but it’s from Kraft:
    http://www.kraftrecipes.com/recipes/easy-bake-cheddar-biscuits-106088.aspx
I suggest using an extra sharp cheddar block from the deli instead of Kraft’s cheese.

  8. Jill says:

Also instead of “nerds” coating they could had gone toward the popping candy territory. That would be fun!

  9. M86 says:

    – Potato Oles from Taco John’s.
    – Pizza from Casey’s General Store
    – Anything from Culver’s

Those maybe aren’t so much underrated as they are “why aren’t these chains nationwide as opposed to just the Midwest?!”. And yes, Casey’s is a convenience store chain, but even their slogan is “Famous for pizza”.

    • T says:

Oh man the breakfast pizza from Casey’s…unbeatable!

    • Mike N. says:

@MX6 Yes, Casey’s pizza is awesome! Great place to stop on the road in the middle of nowhere to fuel up on gas, beer, and pizza. Their sandwiches aren’t bad either. Casey’s niche seems to be being in tiny towns, but it works for them.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@M86 – I need to go to this Culver’s place; seen it mentioned here several times

  10. Sarah says:

Are you familiar with the western New York chain Mighty Taco? It is definetely not underrated, buffalonians live off of it….and they have the best chicken fajita burrito. As far as bad chains go….Applebee’s is nasty but their mozzarella sticks, always perfect.

  11. Game says:

Wendys fast food Chili. So wrong for ordering and yet so right.
Couple packs of the hot seasoning and good to go. Heck, I use the hot seasoning to dip fries (solo or mixed with ketchup).

Chick Fil a, pre menu changes, the Southwest Salad. Simple but happy.
Even with all the tweaks to grilled chicken, I’d be so mad if they mess up the happy stuff that the Spicy one is made of.

  12. T says:

I have to agree with the others here and say Taco Bell, I am a picky eater and the multitude of things I can get from there that are just meat, bread, and cheese are amazing. Just the simple cheese roll ups are enough to make me go there.

  13. Michelle says:

I’m going to also give props to Denny’s. I think the quality depends on who runs the local restaurant. Our local Denny’s(es?) have always been pretty good, and still relatively inexpensive. I loved the gingerbread French Toast they had at Christmas, and their chicken apple salad is great. Plus I’m over 50, so get the AARP discount!

I also second a love of Qdoba’s queso. When I go there, I always get the queso nachos (chips on the side).

A chain I fell in love with when I was in Arizona was Paradise Café. Similar to Panera, but I thought their sweet baked goods were better, and they had a nice selection of salads and sandwiches.

  14. Taylor says:

If you’re ever in the Midwest, Runza is the way to go.
It’s very popular here in Nebraska and I’m surprised they haven’t grown more.
Also, I’ve noticed their condiments are above average. They have homemade ranch, and the best barbecue sauce I’ve had from a fast food place.

In general, Popeye’s is always forgotten among my friends and me, but it always satisfies.
Usually I opt for a hamburger, but every once in a while a hot dog from Five Guys is perfect. Also CAJUN FRIES from Five Guys. Freddy’s also has great hot dogs.

  15. Cat says:

I was kind of confused when I first bought these, but now.. they’re my crack.

  16. Technosquid says:

If only I could get every Chipotle to consistently put a whole spoon full of meat on my burrito / bowl.

  17. Jessica B. says:

The Nerds Bumpy Jelly Beans are actually available year-round as “Giant Chewy Nerds”; they’re exactly the same product as far as I can tell. I’ve noticed the Giant Chewy Nerds in the candy aisle of at least two stores here in the local (north Seattle metro) area,so I wouldn’t think they’d be too hard to find for those who like them.

  18. erin says:

I love all these “chiotpotlefied” chains around me. I’ve been hitting up &pizza and cava a lot lately.

  19. erin says:

I know! I am not really sure it counts as a chain since it’s so local but I go there pretty often. Though I don’t mind panera for a quick lunch instead and First Watch is also very good. But both of those places attract so many people from work since they’re a short drive so I try to avoid them a bit. I wish they’d open a cava by my work though because I wouldn’t mind dealing with coworkers there

  20. Kel says:

Wait, the Nerds Jelly Beans and Giant Chewy Nerds are the same thing? Are you sure? Because if so, I need to get me some. I loved those, but can’t find them anywhere any more.

If you can find it, you need to get a Taco Bell Chili Cheese Burrito. Pure TB crack. But only certain locations carry it (there’s actually a website where people track it).

I love pretty much everything that Bojangles does, but the hidden gem is something called Roasted Chicken Bites (f/k/a Buffalo Bites).
