TURBOSPOKE!

When I was a kid, I used to ride my bike…a LOT. I didn’t own any real video game system until I was in my teens, so playing outside was literally just riding my bike around and around the neighborhood. It was awesome. When my friends would come over, they wouldn’t say, “Can Eric come out and play?” they’d say, “Can Eric come ride bikes?” Seriously. Did anyone else have this experience?  Riding bikes was THE ISH back then. It was all my friends and I would do. No wonder I was so skinny.

And one thing my friends and I did consistently was attached baseball cards to the backs of our bikes with clothespins to make dirt bike noises!!! Now, I KNOW I’m not the only one to do that. It looked like this:

hqdefault

AWWWW YEAH. The old card-in-the-spokes. I miss those days.

And now someone has taken that concept and made it…well, better. Check out….TURBOSPOKE.

THAT. IS. BAD. ASS.

Now, an old curmudgeon could say, “That’s a waste of money!” But for me, as a kid, I remember that the biggest pain in the ass was that the clothespins would snap off every 30 seconds, get jammed into my wheels and send me flying over the handlebars.  Or, the cards would eventually be ground into dust.  Who KNOWS how many Babe Ruth cards I destroyed doing this.

So yes. Gimme Turbospoke. I wanna sound like I’m riding a dirt bike, ALL THE TIME. Oh yeah, I need a bike too. Because I’m pretty sure my old Huffy BMX bike was sold at a garage sale 15 years ago for $10.

What do you think? Did you ever ride bikes with the card in the spokes like I did?  Is Turbospoke awesome or dumb? Let me know in the comments below.

TODAY’S JUNK FOOD: Palmer Candy Cane Cups!!

Palmer Candy Cane Cups

Palmer Candy Cane Cups: The Money Shot

Palmer Candy Cane Cups are the latest peppermint/chocolate confection I found at my local grocery store. “Candy Cane Crunch in a Chocolaty Shell!” Sweet!  I’ve liked Palmer candy for a while now, and had it a bunch growing up….so these cups jumped out at me right away.  The obvious question is: Would these taste like a York Peppermint Patty or not? Let’s do some photos and get right to the review.

When I opened this bag of Palmer Candy Cane Cups, the smell of chocolate and peppermint oil was SUPER strong…which I took to be a good sign. Why be subtle when it comes to candy? LET’S DO THIS.

The outside of these Palmer Candy Cane Cups was dark chocolate, not unlike a York Peppermint Patty. As I chewed through the rest of the cup, the balance of chocolate and peppermint was definitely more towards the chocolate side.  This definitely tasted like chocolate flavored with mint – there was not the same icy sensation when the mint punches you in the face, even for a second, like the York patties.

Still, these cups were pretty damn good – I didn’t mind that the mint was the secondary flavor here.  There  aesthetic of the cup was great, and the flavor reminded me a lot of Andes candies – just a nice, sweet chocolate flavored with mint candy/confection.

The creme on the inside had little tiny crunches which I’m sure was just colored sugar crystals – not mini candy cane pieces.  The peppermint flavor here clearly came from the peppermint oil.

So, all in all, pretty good!  Not the same as a York patty, but still very very tasty. I’d buy these again.

Clothespins with baseball cards were bad ass and turbo spoke is even a badder ASS! I tried to impress a girl that I like by popping a wheelie but the back wheel somehow got caught by the clothespin and my head landed right on the asphalt. Ahhhh, memories!

“$30 with shipping?? That’s a waste of money!” Yes, children of the 1980s the thing to do was ride bikes. I rode the hell out of mine & wore the seat away – I ended up riding on rags wrapped in black electrical tape. I could ride faster than anyone on my 1-speed, yet when it came to running, I was the slowest kid in class :\
I used 1988 Donruss cards for my cards (worthless things) plus electrical tape & eventually used the cardboard from my dad’s beer boxes in place, which was louder & lasted longer. One of the happiest memories of my childhood was riding on the vacant lots that had bike dirt trails & mounds. Some of those were challenging & fast (re:dangerous & fun). Was sad when they built on the last one. Damn progress!!

  3. Sarah says:

Well I’m an idiot as I never realized the purpose of the card in the wheel was to make it sound like a motor bike! Ok this upgrade seems interesting but that’s an awful amount of extra work. Maybe I’m just more old fashioned and cheap!

Vat19, the Skymall of sitting on your couch surfing the internet.

  5. MKC says:

I told my kids about the card-in-the-spokes trick I used to do and they just look at me like “How lame.” It was awesome! We also tried to crunch pop cans around the spokes but that didn’t work so good. Hey, we were little kids 🙂

  6. Meral says:

The old school hacks are way better. Nothing beats them. It’s all about the imagination. I used to rollerblade and ride razor scooters all the time! My friends and I would go outside when it got dark and break glow sticks and put all that highly toxic glow-in-the-dark fluid on the wheels. We would pretend they were sparks that made us go super fast. Then they made wheels with lights…. It just wasn’t as fun as our homemade turbo wheels.

  7. Liz S. says:

Honestly, I’ve never heard of Turbospoke before – is that really lame of me? Haha.

Those Candy Cane Cups look like the perfect Christmastime treat to share at a holiday party.

  8. Heather says:

My dad and brother taught me about the joy of attaching a baseball card to a bike wheel. I was never a girly girl growing up anyway. This Turbospoke thing is cool, but I still like the old-school method. This high-tech stuff’s just not the same! 😉

  9. Sarah says:

Riding bikes! Of course! Back in the early 80’s on a rainy day you could find me riding my bike….called the”daisy duke” and riding through puddles with my strawberry shortcake rain coat on! Sounds like a conflict of interest now….anyways, I usually find palmers at the dollar store, never considered them, maybe now I will!

  10. Mike N. says:

Wow, I think you’re the only person I’ve ever known who likes Palmer candy. I mean, it’s edible and all, but it was always the last left in my Easter basket. (Didn’t realize they made Christmas candy, but it makes sense.)

  11. Sue says:

Bikes, no not really. I mean i had one but maybe as a girl we had other interests that were more important but i would absolutely agree in having 2 brothers bikes were more their territory.
I am in the minority in i also like Palmers. I have stashed a few boxes of their peppermint bark squares. i like to indulge in one for only 45 calories while drinking a nice hot cup of coffee. So i will pick these up too if i happen to see them, but i wouldn’t go as far as to search them out.

  12. alek says:

Never had that kind of bike before. I’m a ’90’s kid!

  13. DeannaR says:

I never tried the baseball cards in the spokes. The coveted accessories during my “biker years” for any girl’s bike were ribbon tassels on the handles and a cute basket on the front.

  14. Sophie says:

I’m a fan of Andes mints but not really of York Peppermint Patties so I’m pretty interested in these Palmer Candy Cane Cups, and of course cards in the spokes, classic, I didn’t ever do it personally but my brothers were very into it.

  15. Dr. Stanley Goodspeed says:

I wasn’t really feeling it until I saw the unicycle. A unicycle ersatz dirt bike!

Also, this seems like a cheap way to make electric cars give off enough noise to alert pedestrians. Teslas with Turbospokes is the future.

  16. Whitney says:

My friends and I didn’t use cards (because we were girls, maybe? And that semed like a boy thing) but we had little pegs that clipped onto the spokes that made clicking noises; they came in wild colors (hot pink, etc.) and of course we never got sick of hearing that sound, even after riding all day and night. Now I think I’d go crazy after just 5 minutes of listening to that.

  17. John R. says:

I used to use cards. Always tried to use a Jack of Diamonds, if I could. As for this Turbospoke, I’d give it a whirl.
