Review: New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread, Question: What Do I Eat This On?, & The Nosh Show Ep. 42!

Junk Food Nation, let’s talk about chocolate and peanut butter. In life, whenever we think of, and speak of, the combo of chocolate and peanut butter, the brand that always comes to mind is “Reese’s.” It just IS. Reese’s peanut butter cups were created in 1928, and since then, every other peanut butter/chocolate combo has been compared to it.

I’ve reviewed dark chocolate peanut butters, white chocolate peanut butters, silk chocolate peanut butterspeanut butter & chocolate on graham crackers, peanut butter & chocolate on Ritz, peanut butter & chocolate in a Pop-Tart, peanut butter chocolate S’mores, peanut butter chocolate Chex Mix, peanut butter pretzels dipped in chocolate, and competing peanut butter cups. The question and discussion always is “how close to a Reese’s is this product?” Most of them tasted good – but still no cigar. It wasn’t until Reese’s themselves paired with Oreo to make awesome cookies that I thought “Huh, these are pretty damn good, and taste damn near JUST like a Reese’s PB Cup.” But still, something felt SLIGHTLY lacking – like a 90-93% match, but not a total match.  Like every chocolate hazelnut spread, it would never be Nutella.

Oh, but then Reese’s went and did this:

New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread: The Money Shot

Sweet mother of haminahaminahamina swwwiiiing badda. New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread??? This is real? This is real life?

I mean, presumably, this spread tastes exactly like Reese’s peanut butter cups….in a jar, right? So, what do I eat this on?  I guess the easy answer is EVERYTHING, but is this one of those things that might be so good that the only real option is to spoon it directly into my mouth, like the Trader’s Joe’s Cookies & Creme Cookie Butter?

New Reese's Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread

New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread: 190 cal per 2 tablespoons

Yeah, this spread is loaded with sugar, but I didn’t expect anything less. Interesting point: the orange background color is a registered trademark???? WHOA.  So no other jar peanut butter, or maybe no other COMPANY, can use this color? How does THAT work?

New Reese's Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread

New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread: HOLY MOLY

Went I cracked open this New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread, and ripped off the paper seal, I went weak in the knees and nearly fell over. This stuff SMELLED incredible; just like a Reese’s. Strong chocolate notes and with definite peanut butter smell.  Except what looked to be tiny bits of something, this stuff appeared as smooth as chocolate pudding.

New Reese's Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread

New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread: ZOMG

My spoon cut through the New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread like BUDDA.  SUPER smooth, but also with a good consistency – not super oily, not too thick, not too sticky. Just nice, soft peanut butter spread whose surface held and then broke with tiny bits coming to the surface. The consistency looked perfect – it would spread on bread easily without sticking TOO much and tearing whatever surface it was being applied to. I’ve had peanut butter do that before…it’s annoying.

New Reese's Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread

New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread: Sublime

Placing a big ol glob of New Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Spread into my mouth, there’s only one way to describe this: it tastes like a jar of melted Reese’s peanut butter cups. Plain and simple. The flavor is so perfectly spot on, that except for the texture, I honestly think you wouldn’t know the difference between this spread and a Reese’s peanut butter cup.

The flavor was a perfect balance between chocolate and peanut butter in the way that only Reese’s knows how to do it. The distinct Reese’s flavor comes, for me, from the very candy-like flavor of the combo. It was unmistakable that this was a CANDY SPREAD – this wasn’t peanut butter flavored to be Reese’s, this wasn’t some Nutella knock off….no, this was meant to be a REESE’S SPREAD. Like I took a bunch of Reese’s peanut butter cups, melted them into a bowl of nirvana, and bottled that ish.  That’s what this is. It was chocolaty. It was peanut butter-y. It was Reese’s.

If you like Reese’s you must run, no…SPRINT, to your stores to get it. To try it. To rub it all over your face. Buy it, NOW.

Here’s what I want to know in the comments below: What would YOU eat this on?  Apples? Pretzels? Fingers? Ice Cream? Or just spoon to face, spoon to face, spoon to face?  Tell me.

PURCHASED AT: Walmart, Germantown, MD

Let’s see…how WOULDN’T I eat it? On rice cakes, crackers, waffles, breakfast bread, in oatmeal, milkshakes, yogurt…probably just about all the ways I’m used to eating peanut butter (and I eat a lot of peanut butter so I get creative!)

  2. MP says:

I know it sounds crazy that colors can be trademarked, but it’s true. When the Seattle Seahawks changed their uniforms for 2002, instead of using the Pantone Matching System, they “invented” a color called Seahawks Blue. Which is not impossible because you just have to use a combination of RGB values that doesn’t fall under an established color. Seahawks also went the extra step of adding metal to their Seahawks Blue, which could contain like 30% fine metal in the ink mix. Such a thing already exists in gold & silver inks, of course. The Seahawks now use colors of College Navy, Wolf Gray, white & Action Green. *eye roll*
A few years ago the Cincinnati Reds went from 199 PMS to 200 PMS. You could really only tell the difference side by side; if at all. Why do teams do this? To be a snowflake, of course. “We’re special!” More like a pain in the ass. Tho the worst color to deal with is purple – it seems like every piece of purple equipment is in a different shade. I know tailors & decorators hate using it.
As for the Reese’s spread, I don’t even know what I would put this on. Frost cake or cupcakes with it? In between two cookies? Honestly I’d rather have sharp cheddar spread 😛

You must work at a printing company, or something similar? Lol I worked in printing for 10 years and I understood every single thing you said here. =)

    • junkfoodguy says:

@MP: I LOVE THIS RESPONSE – lol. And I followed you the whole way. I liked the info about the Seahawks blue too! Thanks for enlightening me 🙂

      Yes, frost cakes with it

If I buy this, I will also have to start planning 10 mile runs. I think it’s a fair trade.
I would say I’d use a spoon or finger but slices of apples will find their way in because then that’s like healthy, right?

  4. Devin says:

I would spread it on all of those Reese’s products that don’t really taste like Reese’s so that they finally will.

  5. Sarah says:

Mother of Mary… Spoon to mouth, that’s the only way. Ok maybe if I think *ahead* of time I’ll have a few bananas and some flatbread whatever and make a banana sandwich with this stuff. I can see the food bloggers out there in glee coming up with cool treats to make.

Though now I’m wondering, if you did take a bunch of Reese’s cups and melted them, then compared them to the jar, would they be exact? And how many cups would it take to match? Might be just cheaper to buy the jar.

  6. Eilish says:

This looks so good. How does it compare to dark chocolate dreams peanut butter?

  7. Heather says:

You nailed it with your description of this. Reese’s Spread tastes EXACTLY like melted Reese’s Cups, which is definitely a good thing. I bought a jar and finished it off within three days. I like it straight up. Just a spoon and your mouth is all you need. I don’t want anything to get in the way of the chocolaty peanut-buttery goodness. I agree that everyone should buy Reese’s Spread NOW!!!!!

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Heather – I’ve still only used a spoon, haha …It’s like I’m too lazy to eat regular PB cups, so I just need it in butter form to be eaten

  8. Marc P says:

I have to echo others – there is seriously nothing this wouldn’t make taste better.
I have a feeling from your description and just the concept itself that this would taste good on a doorknob.

LOVE the fact about the color being owned by them. That is a fantastic fun fact that I am going to repurpose and use on my own.

  9. Might have to see how this will work as a sub in recipes that call for peanut butter…the chocolate might throw off the consistency. Still, I’ve got a cookie recipe that just might be screaming for this stuff. What ARE those ‘bits’ though? Peanut rubble?

Listened to the Nosh Show yesterday and then saw an ad for the KFC bowl last night…during the Simpsons, I think. All of Ryan’s questions answered.

Oh look, the Chiefs covered again…sorry, Jills, need more than a plus plus D-line to make a team (seriously, how good is that line? I think Dareus chased the Chiefs’ plane back to KC and got another sack.).

  10. Judy says:

Dipped potato chips in the spread & of course it was amazing. Also spread it on graham crackers & it was quite good but would hv really shined w/ a marshmallow inbtwn!

  11. John R. says:

Unfortunately, I fear that once I hunt down this spread, Peanut Butter & co. will become dead to me.

  12. Linny says:

Ooh, I would make a stuffed French toast with this. Yum!

  13. Anne says:

I put it on a hot chocolate chip eggo waffle with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top

  14. TK says:

Oh how I hate myself for not catching up on your posts sooner. I saw this at Walgreens last night and debated buying it for a solid 5 minutes but figured it would taste like those Jif Whips so I went with actual Reese Cups instead. Not a bad choice ever but a spread made of Reese’s PB Cups sounds like a food fit for the Gods. It’s my fault for ever daring to doubt Reese’s.

  15. Jude says:

use nilla wafers and make sandwich cookies. yum!

  16. Juanita says:

    Oreos are good to

  17. Emle J says:

And now it’s available in Canada, as well! Oh happy day!……

  18. Isabelle W says:

Can’t say I liked what I tasted. It’s not smooth or chunky, just gritty. Like eating undissolved sugar. I’ll stick with Nutella.

  19. snacknado says:

We love your blog. We love your reviews. We love food.

  20. Mike L says:

I’m not a picky eater, i’m not a food critic or anything like that, everything tastes pretty good to me. So when I saw this stuff it sounded good. Got some and put it on some bread to make like a peanutbutter chocolate sandwich. Took 1 bite and had to spit it out. It tasted like sand covered in playdough mixed with sugar. I remember distinctly thinking ‘I’ve actually found somthing I dont like.’ I would compare it to other bad tasting things but this is far worse. I like chocolate, I like peanut butter but this.. this unholy mixture isnt fit for consumption. I would have rather eaten the money I paid for it than the stuff itself.
