Review: Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips & RANK ‘EM: Gingerbread, Egg Nog, Peppermint

Junk Food Nation, yawn… I am TIRED from watching election returns.  Big races all around, people, big races all around, having big impact on the country. And yet, my subway car still smelled like fish this morning. CAN’T YOU DO ANYTHING RIGHT, WASHINGTON??

Of course, then I walk into a S*storm at work, and that’s the way the ball bounces.  So no snarky commentary today. Instead, I’ll heave a question out there for you guys to discuss in the comments below. A legitimate question that I want to know your opinion: when it comes to holiday flavors, I tend to think of gingerbread, peppermint, and egg nog.  Maybe there are some others.  But mainly those three. So, my questions is how would YOU rank them in life and why?

Me: Gingerbread, Egg Nog, getting hit by a car, and then Peppermint. I’ve really soured on mint these past few years – OVER IT. Gingerbread has always been my favorite simply because its a natural extension from the Fall’s pumpkin spice juggernaut.

You? Tell me in the comments below.

Today’s junk food: Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips!

Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips: The Money Shot

Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips! After all the Asian potato chips I’ve tried, it was about TIME Lay’s took a crack at seaweed. Enough with the random fish and meat flavors, guys.

Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips: BBQ THEM!

The last time I tried a seaweed chip, it was the Salt and Seaweed Pringles from Thailand. Back then, my review was: MORE OF EVERYTHING. More seaweed flavor, more salt, more umami! Would these Lay’s be bold enough?

Yeah…no idea what this text on the bag of Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips says. Lil help?

Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips: 164 cal?

Have to give these Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips credit – there aren’t a ton of ingredients, which means the flavor of these chips should be pretty basic….which, in my eyes, is a good thing.

Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips: Speckled

When I opened this bag of Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips and sniffed, I smelled the FAINT FAINT smell of seaweed, but barely. Honestly, these didn’t smell like much.  They looked REALLY cool though – just basic Lay’s chips SPECKLED all over with bits of seaweed.  I mean, you can’t get much more basic than that.

Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips: Flecks of seaweed

Popping some off these Lay’s Kyushu Seaweed Potato Chips, I was pretty pleased – these tasted almost exactly how I hoped they’d taste.  The underlying chip itself was very basic – good crunch, nice and light, plenty of potato flavor.

The seaweed flavor was immediate and decently strong. For anyone who eats dried seaweed as a snack, these tasted spot-on – immediate umami flavor, with the familiar taste of MSG and seaweed mixing together. As I chewed and the seaweed flavor spread across my tongue, I got that distinct soy/seaweed I’m used to having eaten dried seaweed for much of my life. Savory with a good amount of soy sweetness.

My only complaint? Like the Pringles I mentioned earlier, these could use a LITTLE more salt to help carry that umami flavor out to the proper level.  But that might be my own personal taste.

Either way, these were a good add to the Asian potato chip world.  Nice work, Lay’s!

You did miss Red Velvet – although that one comes back around quick for Valentine’s day – and that would be my personal favorite. I’m definitely then Eggnog, gingerbread and peppermint. Peppermint is available in so many things already year round. The others are more distinctly Christmas.

  2. Steve B. says:

I would rank the three as peppermint first, then peppermint second, and finally peppermint third. I guess I’m spoiled by year-round ginger snaps to consider gingerbread a “holiday” item. And the concept of eating something made with raw egg just doesn’t compute for me.

  3. jes says:

Peppermint then gingerbread. Then literally anything else, then eggnog only if it were the absolute last food left on earth. Yuck.

  4. Justin Cornwell says:

I’d say Gingerbread, Eggnog, Peppermint, but eggnog has been gaining rapidly in recent years. However if I could, I’d like to say that hot chocolate is probably my favorite holiday flavor.

  5. Marc P says:

Nice review JFG. Seaweed is one of my favorite things and would do anything to try out all the seaweed flavored things coming out o Farf Eastern markets.

    For the ranking:
    1. Gingerbread
    2. Gingerbread
    3. Gingerbread

Huge fan of well done gingerbread flavored tihngs with just the right amount of spice and not at all a fan of the others.

  6. Michelle says:

    Gingerbread>>>>>Peppermint>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Dallas winning Superbowl>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Eggnog.

  7. T says:

Your order of preference is spot on for me, and I love how you put “being hit by a car” before peppermint. Lol!

  8. Beeb says:

I think I would say gingerbread, peppermint, and eggnog. But mainly gingerbread

I bought some seaweed snack a month or so ago, but haven’t been brave enough to try it….(found it at a health food store)…..gotta try it

  9. Sarah says:

I can pass on all flavors, just give me ANIS….in everything! In Chile you can buy MSG by the pound…or I guess I should say kilo. I love to put in just about anything I cook, always addsa little something. I bet these chips would be good kettle cooked….just like the Wasabi that won. What happened to the email option that use to follow the comment section of your posts?

  10. MP says:

Pepperkaker cookies (which is basically like gingersnaps on steroids & I really don’t care for gingersnaps) is an old family recipe, then egg nog which is a no-brainer, then spritz cookies or Spritzgebäck & pecan crescent cookies because my mom makes all 3 of these cookies every December & are my favorite ones. And then peppermint ice cream.

  11. Sascha says:

I happen to really like all three, so coming in third on my list does not a loser make. That being said, I’d go with Egg Nog, Peppermint, then gingerbread. And just because I’m nice, a couple of my favorite items featuring each flavor.

Talenti’s Egg Nog gelato is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! It is my favorite Talenti flavor, only too bad it comes around so little. And Speaking of Talenti, the Peppermint Bark is also incredible. Another Peppermint that’s awesome are the White Chocolate Peppermint M&M’s. Lastly, Pfeffernuesse Cookies. Aldi has some pretty damn authentic ones.

    Enjoy!

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Sascha – yeah I enjoyed the Egg Nog Talenti too! Hmmmm I also have an Aldi near me but never ever go in. Maybe I need to now!

  12. BB says:

It’s Eggnog all the way, my favorite flavor holiday or not. I have wanted there to be an Egg Nog Pop Tart like no other for 25 years…

  13. Jes says:

    Peppermint ????, gingerbread , ????????egg noggle. ????

  14. Eilish says:

I would say gingerbread, eggnog, and peppermint. I wants I see more gingerbread flavored things! Maybe a ben and jerrys ice cream or something.

  15. JohhnyP says:

Gingerbread and then peppermint I guess. But strong peppermint things remind me of toothpaste and ruin my ability to taste for hours. I haven’t had eggnog since I was about 10 so I really can’t rank that one.

I think cinnamon is another major one. Cinnamon and sugar are two things that you can never go wrong with.

  16. Elisa says:

Peppermint and gingerbread are a tie for me. For those who shop at Costco, the peppermint bark is out!

  17. Sarah says:

Gotta go peppermint #1, gingerbread a close #2 and eggnog….blurgh. Can’t stand it, so I can’t rank it!

  18. Icedus says:

My ranking’s flipped from yours (except getting hit by a car stays in third place). Gingerbread Twix was my go-to last holiday season, to the extent that I picked up a couple bags on sale around New Year’s and rationed ’em out to the end of their shelf life last month. But then I went and had a Gingerbread Cookie from Subway the other day, and it’s more or less killed my gingerbread hard-on for the season. I would take a bullet for peppermint, though. Now and forever.

As a guy who used to snack on seaweed from time to time back in college, I’m legitimately jealous. I kinda wish someone had thought that up as a Flavor to Do Us instead of Wasabi Ginger.

  19. TehBuLL says:

I’ve yet to have a good eggnog. I keep waiting…but I always come away with the thought “why am I doing this?”

    Also dried seaweed is greatness.

    • Marc P says:

      Spot on!
All seaweed is greatnees in my opinion though.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@TehBull: There are times when I’m drinking egg nog that I think, OH GOD THIS WOULD BE THE WORST WAY TO DROWN. Because it sort of feels like I’m drowning when I’m drinking it.

  20. Kaitlyn says:

i definitely rank gingerbread number one. i feel like cinnamon reminds me of the holidays, gives me a warm feeling, but i guess it’s not really a holiday flavor. peppermint is only good in the form of gum or breath mints.. i don’t even really like candy canes, unless they are a different flavor (cherry is the beeest!). i’ve honestly never tried eggnog, so i’m not sure about that one.

  21. Brit says:

GINGERBREAD, then eggnog. No need for anything peppermint flavored…

  22. Steve says:

Maybe the Metro cars will start smelling like pot now.

My wife spent the entire month of October cataloging pumpkin spice foods on her facebook page. We were trying to guess what the next big holiday flavor would be and I see A LOT of gingerbread stuff popping up. I prefer the salted caramel flavor over gingerbread or eggnog.

  23. Sarah says:

I would rank them as gingerbread, gingerbread, then gingerbread! Don’t need peppermint or eggnog.

  24. Lindemann says:

Peppermint, gingerbread, nog. But I like ’em all.

Another flavor profile I associate with the holidays is the straight-up sugar cookie, either in spritz cookie form (as mentioned earlier) or decorated with thin confectioners’ sugar-based icing and various other candies by kids. (I really only want to eat sugar cookies that have been hand-decorated by children. If it looks too good, I don’t want to eat it.)

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Lindemann – yes, you’re right – straight sugar cookie is a good call. So many people botch this, however. Do you make plain sugar cookies?

  25. Soraya says:

    Speculoos !!

Then gingerbread. Then peppermint. Eggnog? Hmm. Well I suppose there are nastier flavors in the world….like durian!!
