Review: New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits & Backup QB vs. JFG: NFL Week 7 & Is It Always a Bad Idea To Go To Vegas Alone?

Junk Food Nation, one of my favorite things to do is go to Vegas. I’m not REALLY a degenerate gambler, but let’s face it: I watch sports all the time, I play fantasy sports all the time, I’m doing picks with the BQB, I’m signing up for FanDuel leagues – I might as well be a degen. Plus, throw in my love for poker, craps, pai gow….you know what, it’s probably a good thing I DON’T live close to any casinos.

Anyways, I find the best time to go to Vegas is during March Madness or during football season – tons of games to watch, and there’s nothing quite like sitting in a cloud of smoke in a casino sports book tightly gripping bet receipts while you anxiously watch the Jets blow it on the final play. Problem: all of my friends are now having kids, and my available wingmen to hit Vegas with are decreasing to almost zero.  Hell, it may as well be zero.  Two of my friends are actually scheduled to have babies on the EXACT WEEKEND of the first round of March Madness.  You gotta be kidding me.

So, I had an extreme thought: What if I went to Vegas ALONE? I could still watch all the games, eat at nice restaurants, wander the strip.  Then I had a second thought: What an awful idea. Vegas is one of those places that if I disappeared, there’d REALLY be no way to know WTF happened.  Vegas and the Louisiana Bayou – two places where it’s impossible to track down anyone.  But people do it, right? Go to Vegas alone?  HAS anyone gone to Vegas alone? EVER?  Or is it always, ALWAYS, a horrible idea?  Tell me what you think in the comments below.

Back to football: here’s the tally so far regarding the season long bet between me and the BackUp QB:

Backup QB Picks JFG Picks
WEEK 6 6-7-1 (6 pts) 2-11-1 (2 pts) (BRUTAL)
SEASON 38-43-4 (42 pts) 36-45-4 (48 pts)

YIKES.  Last week was HORRIBLE.  I got eleven games wrong???? WTF.  BQB made up four points on my and now I’m only leading by a touchdown.  It’s time to regain my composure. For Week 7, the BQB’s lock is OAKLAND +4: “This is more of a bet against Arizona than anything; they’ve looked shaky the past several weeks against Denver and Washington, and their DVOA is actually only 19th out of 32 despite their 4-1 record.  Oakland, on the other hand, is winless but not atrocious…” Check out the rest of the BQB’s picks here.

My LOCK OF THE CENTURY…OF THE WEEK… is the CHARGERS -4 over the Chiefs.  You didn’t cover for me last week, Chargers, but that’s ok. I still love you. Let’s get it done this week vs. the Chiefs, ok? Ok. That’s a good boy.

Today’s junk food: New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits!

New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits: The Money Shot

New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits were spotted at a local grocery, and I was kind of surprised – I still associate Quaker only with oatmeal, although I have reviewed two other Quaker cookie products here and here. Those were just ok.  I was hopeful that these Oreo-like sandwich cookies would be better.  Plus, strawberry creme intrigued me.

New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits: SO MANY INGREDIENTS

New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits contain a whole lot of ingredients, and a whole lotta preservatives.  LOOK AWAY LOOK AWAY

New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits: Golden Oreos?

New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits also come in vanilla flavor, or Golden Oreo flavor. Strangely, the grocery I went to only had the strawberry flavor, not the vanilla.

New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits: The Individual Money Shot

New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits come two to a pack, and I guess I could see eating these on the go.  Are these meant to be a meal replacement, or a cookie?  Not sure – sandwich biscuits is a new category I’m not quite familiar with.  It’s like BelVita with extra sugar.

I opened a single package of these New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits, and there they were – the biscuits, each one the size of a large eraser, and I could immediately smell the artificial strawberry flavor.  It’s an artifical strawberry that I’m familiar with, however – it’s like the strawberry icing at Dunkin Donuts, or the strawberry milkshake Whoppers I’ve eaten before. You guys all know the type of strawberry I’m talking about.

Popping one of these New Quaker Oat & Yogurt Strawberry Sandwich Biscuits into my mouth, I chewed, and was actually pleased.  The flavor of these biscuits was actually pretty good, in that fake flavoring sort-of-way.

The biscuits themselves were nice and hearty, with a slight sweetness.  The heartiness of the cookie was nice; despite the small size of the sandwich, I felt like I got a decent chew out of these.  The biscuits were sort of crunchy but still sort enough to crumble away in my mouth, like a typical oatmeal cookie.

The strawberry creme was plenty sweet and while it tasted artificial it was in a manner that I familiar, as I mentioned before.  Sort of that vanilla-strawberry-creamy flavor that strawberry frosting generally has.  That plus the biscuits resulted in a taste that sort of tasted like a heartier Froot Loops, in cookie form.  The flavor wasn’t anything special – it was mainly the nice texture that put these over the top for me.  I enjoyed these more than the strawberry Grahamfuls. Not sure if I’d go out of my way for these, but I would definitely eat them again.

PURCHASED AT: Safeway, Waterfront Metro Stop, DC.

COST: $2.50 on sale

I once went to a White Sox home opener by myself. I don’t see anything wrong or awkward about going to Vegas or any place by yourself. Just tell your family & friends where you’re staying and/or keep making updates on Instagram.
Few things are sadder than losing friends to kids. The solution is to make new childfree friends; that’s what I did. Those of us who never want kids.

@MP: Yeah…I think in Vegas, I just need a wing man. Maybe I can do a Tweet up, and members of Junk Food Nation can just meet me out there?

I hope you don’t drop us child-havers for child-free people, Eric. We still want to have you over to watch NFL action! Just don’t cheer too loud. (Actually, we are planning to use one of those remote-monitor things so we can have the baby upstairs and the TV far away. So be loud.)

Anyway, traveling alone is much different than traveling with folks. You’re in your own head, setting your own schedule, with no one to dissuade you from bad ideas or poo-poo your good ideas (or propose bad or good ideas of his/her own). I found it very relaxing, but I was going to more pastoral environments than Vegas when I traveled alone. Your mileage may vary.

@Lindemann – Yeah I could see going to, like, the beach by myself. But Vegas???? I might get duct taped into a van outside of the Bellagio.

To me the Quaker Strawberry Yogurt cookies sounds boring. Not that exciting at all. I don’t see actual strawberries in the list.

  5. Kahnfucius says:

If you go to Vegas by yourself you won’t have Zach Galifinaikis, Bradley Cooper, and Ed Helms trying to save you from being stuck on the roof of Caesar’s Palace…because they put you there. Actually, never mind.

  6. Heather says:

I haven’t tried the strawberry flavor of these, but I’ve had the vanilla ones. The filling was rich, creamy and had the distinct tang of yogurt. It worked really well with the hearty texture of the cookie. I don’t know if I’ll buy them again or not, but they were definitely worth trying once. As for Vegas, I say go for it! #YoloSolo! 🙂

  7. Elisa says:

I flew out to a major conference in Las Vegas over the summer and had a blast on my own during the down time. I stayed mid-Strip so it was convenient to walk to the other big name casino/hotels (including Caesar’s!) or hop on the Monorail for other casinos further down.
I did meet up with colleagues for drinks though. Bourbon on the rocks in a sports betting bar area, anyone?

  8. Deena says:

I really like the strawberry ones but like you, haven’t found the elusive vanilla variety.
