Review: Limited Edition Utz Yuengling Hot Wing Sauce Potato Chips & An Air Umbrella? SAY WHAAAA

Junk Food Nation, I want to talk about something I saw on the Facebook page of a prior law professor of mine, and then eventually all OVER Facebook: THE AIR UMBRELLA.

The Kickstarter for the Air Umbrella is simple: instead of carrying a regular umbrella, you carry an electronic stick that propels water away from you. I feel like I imagined this when I was a kid – forcefield umbrellas.  Or maybe I’ve just seen too many sci-fi movies where people were using forcefield shields and thought, “that’d be great for an umbrella!” Anyways, watch the concept video here:

Basically, this thing has a nozzle head that sucks in air below and spits it out at high pressure above to repel water – looking like this:

WHOA.

Of course, there are downsides.  As this article points out, you basically end up spraying everyone around you.  And, when you REALLY look at the technology and specs on the Kickstarter page, this thing is basically just a super high powered fan on the end of a scepter.  Plus, from the comments on my law prof’s post:

“An umbrella that only works for 15 minutes, has to be recharged, and costs $128? Count me in.”

“And sprays every person around you, making you the worst pedestrian ever.”

Heh heh. But if you’re into it, contribute to the Kickstarter here! So what do YOU think, Junk Food Nation, about the Air Umbrella? Tell me in the comments below.

Limited Edition Utz Yuengling Hot Wing Sauce Potato Chips: The Money Shot

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO nelly. Two great Pennsylvania brands in one – Utz and Yuengling! At first, when I saw this bag, I thought these potato chips were just flavored with Yuengling beer, period. Then I looked closer….oooooh, these are Limited Edition Utz Yuengling Hot Wing Sauce Potato Chips… got it.

Limited Edition Utz Yuengling Hot Wing Sauce Potato Chips: cayenne pepper sauce!

Limited Edition Utz Yuengling Hot Wing Sauce Potato Chips contain cayenne pepper sauce, like most hot wing chips…and I’m assuming the beer, if anything, fits under the “natural flavors” part of the ingredients?  …..beer has nothing to do with these chips, do they, Utz?

Limited Edition Utz Yuengling Hot Wing Sauce Potato Chips: well powdered

I opened this bag of Limited Edition Utz Yuengling Hot Wing Sauce Potato Chips, and, I must say, the smell of hot wing sauce was STRONG.  Like, really strong. Bold bold bold….more than I expected.  Definitely a vinegary tang that burned the nostrils a little bit.  Interesting. Let’s taste.

Limited Edition Utz Yuengling Hot Wing Sauce Potato Chips: Covered in powder

WOW.  These Limited Edition Utz Yuengling Hot Wing Sauce Potato Chips were GREAT.  Like, whoa. I can’t even described how surprised I was, considering I didn’t realize these were supposed to be hot wing chips to begin with.

The Utz chip itself was super light and crispy, like most Utz chips, so there wasn’t the problem that a lot of hot wing chips have where the potato flavor ends up overpowering or drowning out the hot wing sauce flavor.  Instead, the thinness of the chip allowed the powder/sauce to be the star.

The Yuengling sauce was OUTSTANDING. Salty, but not too salty. VERY vinegar-y and tangy.  VERY cayenne-y, with AWESOME burn.  Bold bold bold in every sense of the word – just like I like it!  And enough garlic to help make sure it was still savory and not just spicy.  This may be one of the best hot wing potato chips I’ve ever had, no joke.  Holy cow Utz.  These were unexpectedly tasty. Need to buy a few more bags of these – ASAP.  If you like hot wing chips and have been disappointed in the past, try to get your hands on these.  You’ll enjoy them.

So you’re out on a rainy day, holding what looks like a pink massage wand up in the air like some kind of Gaga-esque Statue of Liberty. Yeah, so far so good.

And then if the bus takes 20 minutes to show up instead of 15, you are soaked and stuck holding a dead two pound massage wand. I guess that’s karma for soaking all the other people at the stop.

Yeah, no. I’m holding out for the force field. That will work with wind, too.

@Indigo: “Pink massage wand”…..LOL!!! Such a good description.

Also, the lady in pink in the still frame of the video looks super happy, doesn’t she? haha

I just had to work outside in the rain last night. I had a regular umbrella but because it never rains straight in FL, my pants/shoes/socks were soaked through. I would murder anybody who sprayed additional water on me. I still can’t warm up!

On that note, this makes me really wish we could get Utz down here.

I always thought a forced air mechanism would work well for a car instead of windshield wipers. Now I now my project for the next couple of years.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@steve: OOOO on cars actually makes so much more sense, frankly. Higher propulsion possibilities too with no fear of running out of juice.

    • My understanding is that windshield wipers are already going away. I think it was some sort of ultrasonic thing they were going to use…more effective, lighter, and cheaper than the wipers/motor.

Not sure how they’d work on ice/snow, though. Also, an umbrella works in ice/snow, how would poofs of air work on sleet?

    • Yeah, here we go…http://blog.caranddriver.com/mclaren-is-coming-for-your-windshield-wipers-ultrasonic-glass-blaster-in-idea-stage/

“That’s because unlike previous wiper-less windshield ideas, which generally centered around blasting high-pressure air at the glass, McLaren’s concept would use ultrasound waves to micro-shake debris loose. Were the system to ever make it to production, theoretically it would utilize an ultrasonic transducer embedded in the windshield that emits high-frequency ultrasound waves, which would travel over the glass’s surface to prevent stuff from taking hold…

McLaren tells us that, for now, the ultrasonic concept is just that—a concept—and that the company has yet to reveal any technical details. We hope it gets the go-ahead, and that McLaren can make it work, because we’d love to experience a rainstorm without using windshield wipers.”

That umbrella is pretty cool, can’t believe Im saying that. The best part- getting the rain on other people, who are they kidding? And then you don’t have to walk around with a wet mess when you get back to your house/desk/car.

One other thing: will the Royals ever lose? Can that Lorde person write a song called Yankees, maybe that will help us.

  5. Lindemann says:

Why are these chips not in my mouth right now? I have wasted my life.

    • Yeung Jeezy says:

Completely agree. Why weren’t these (or at least the hot wing sauce) part of the brewery tour?

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Lindemann: DUDE, I know. I was shocked how good these were. I’m going to buy a ton and bring them over next time
