Review: Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish & The Nosh Show Episode 33

Junk Food Nation, how was your holiday weekend?  Mine was low low low key.  I’m taking a break from reviewing the Summer Fancy Food Show (Day 1, Part 1 and Day 1, Part 2 can be read here) to do a normal review.  Ahhh, feels good to flex my reviewing muscles again.  But first…

HEY HEY, IT’S THE NOSH SHOW! PEOPLE SAY WE NOSHIN’ AROUND!

TODAY’S JUNK FOOD: Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish!

Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish: The Money Shot

I’ll be honest, it’s been a while since I reviewed any Pepperidge Farm Goldfish on this blog. I’d been disappointed with the flavors of Goldfish in the supermarket, and even with some of the new flavors, I still haven’t felt compelled to review them.  So when I saw this Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish…I thought, “Uh….I mean, it says Limited Edition and it claims to be super spicy…which is rare for Goldfish….sigh, ok.  I’ll do it”  So I am writing this review somewhat skeptically.  I hope I really like these and that these Goldfish prove me wrong.

Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish: 57 pieces!?

Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish: paprika!

I love that the serving size of these Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish is 57 pieces.  Why 57, exactly?  Not 56, not 58?  Hm.  These Goldfish seem loaded with paprika and red pepper, so let’s open the bag up and see.

Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish: Looks…like Goldfish

I opened this bag of Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish and pressed my nose up to it…and SNIFFED…and I got a TINY bit of spice that tickled my nose.  Which, honestly, was more than I expected.  There was a small cheese small (barely).  Otherwise, I just smelled the normal dough cracker smell of Goldfish that I was used to.  Munch time.

Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish: Surface powdered

Chewed one Limited Edition Pepperidge Farm Screamin’ Hot Goldfish cracker: tiny bit of spice that definitely grew in my mouth.  Flavor was weird though – very tangy, not enough cheese flavor.  Tasted like powdered chiles.

Popped two more into my mouth at once, chewed: Same tangy weird flavor, but more cheese cracker taste this time.  Burn was less (odd).  Definitely some consistency issues with burn between cracker pieces.  Still, what spice that did remain grew and lingered.  When eating two pieces together, very salty.

Four pieces at once: Better flavor fot he underlying cheese cracker and a tiny bit of savoriness.  DEFINITELY salty.  Good burn now, I must’ve gotten a couple of heavily spiced pieces.  Same flavor of dried chiles.  While the spice is nice, the flavor of eating what tastes like eating red pepper flakes or paprika directly is not pleasant. It has a weird tang and doesn’t show up as savory at all.

Verdict? Meh. I will say this – they got the spice right.  I don’t think anyone can say these AREN’T spicy (though SCREAMIN’ HOT might be a stretch).  Definite inconsistent spiciness between Goldfish.  I liked this as much as any other Goldfish crackers, which = meh, so-so. There wasn’t enough savory in the cracker for me to say these TASTED good.  But if you’re looking for a spicy cracker, these might be your cup of tea.

Nice touch with the “El Dinero Foto”

  2. Sarah says:

Caramel Apple Oreos? Ok it sounds intriguing but disastrous at the same time.

  3. MP says:

I can’t remember the brand, but like 12 years ago I had some Ramen in a cup that I swear tasted EXACTLY like Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream chips. I actually really liked it. I would eat the cheeseburger Ramen over the hot dog one.

@MP: Ruffles Cheddar and Sour Cream Ramen. Intrigued and scared at the same time.

    • MP says:

@ JFG Maybe it was Maruchan, I do remember there being cheese powder on top & wide noodles. It was like a soupy mac n cheese; which times I’ll make.

  4. Kaitlyn says:

i need to hear about these caramel apple oreos.. sounds like a really weird combination. and, btw, serving sizes typically run at 1 oz which equals 57 goldfish, apparently 😉

  5. TroutPoutt says:

Disappointment. If something is calling itself “Screamin’ Hot” it had better be spicy enough to make my eyes water. No spice; no dice.
And just who is gonna eat 57 Goldfish in one sitting? Ain’t nobody got time for that.

  6. Goldfish crackers is very tasty. I like this item so much Mostly I like it while I am on long journey. I buy this crackers from online shop because it has fast delivery system and I don’t have the time to go to buy it from a shop.
