Junk Food Nation, Happy Monday!  It’s World Cup fever around my household; I believe I watched 40 straight hours of World Cup Soccer.  There wasn’t 40 hours of World Cup Soccer to watch?  I guess I am brain dead from watching however many hours of World Cup there were to watch.  Plus the NBA Finals gaaah sport sports sports.

Anyways, if you’re looking for my Turkey Hill winner/contest, scroll to the bottom of the post.  Let’s get right into what you’re wondering about – the new LIMITED EDITION REESE’S PEANUT BUTTER CUP OREOS!

You know, I’m not sure WHY I thought these were a Walmart exclusive.  For a couple of weeks now, I called every Walmart in a 20 miles radius looking for these Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreos.  And then people online started to spot them everywhere, and BOOM – there they were at my local Safeway. THANKS FOR NOTHING, WALMART. (Shhh…no I didn’t mean it, Walmart. You’ve given so many lovely goodies in the past. I love you, Walmart.)

But here they are! Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo!  I know *I* have been highly anticipating this combination, and it finally EXISTS.  I mean, Peanut Butter Creme Oreos have existed for a while; it’s a wonder that this combo didn’t arrive sooner.

So, Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo have chocolate creme and peanut butter flavor creme.  Half half.  I wonder if the Oreo cookie itself is supposed to represent the chocolate outside of a Reese’s Peanut Butter cup, or if the two different cremes are supposed to represent the PB Cup flavor on their own?

Yadda yada yada….Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo contains sugar, processed things, blah blah….moving on.

I opened up the package of Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo and sniffed and I personally thought these smelled delightful.  Just like peanut butter and chocolate, without smelling too artificial.  Let’s open one of these suckers up.

As you can see, the cremes of this Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo were indeed split in half.  To give it a full analysis I did a three-step tasting process.  First, the peanut butter creme by itself – it was smooth and creamy, and tasted a LOT like the peanut butter inside of a Reese’s peanut butter cup.  I was actually astounded at how close these tasted to an actual peanut butter cup.  It was pretty sweet with a decent tinge of salt.  Good peanut flavor; definitely tasting more like the peanut confection inside of a peanut butter cup than actual peanut butter.

Second, the chocolate creme by itself – sweet, and peanut buttery-chocolaty.  The Junk Food Gal thought it tasted just like chocolate, but I believe that the darker creme definitely had a mixture of chocolate and peanut butter flavor that, to me, tasted exactly like a full peanut butter cup (i.e., the chocolate and peanut butter together.)  So, the two cremes MIXED TOGETHER definitely leaned more toward the peanut butter side of things.  Perfect setup to be eaten with the Oreo wafer!

So, finally, I ate the full cookie – cremes, wafers, and all.  BAM!  Delicious.  I could taste the full flavor of the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and the nice crunch and slight bitterness of the Oreo wafer mixed together.  To me, this tasted exactly like placing a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup in between two Oreo wafers.  The flavor, if not 100% spot on for me, was super close – above 90%.  Just a well represented, well executed flavor that will satisfy both Oreo and Reese’s fans.  KILLER combo. PERFECT execution. One of my favorite Oreos, ever.

But the analysis of these Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo CANNOT STOP THERE!  No, no, no.  The big question for ME was how can I take the CHEESIEST picture ever? I managed it, above.

No, wait.  Let me correct myself: The big question for ME was how did these cookies ACTUALLY compare to a Reese’s.  After all, my mind can tell me a lot of things – side by side is required for a fully informed opinion.  Plus, what about those old Peanut Butter Creme Oreos?  How were these new Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo different?  WERE they different?

Can I just tell you how hard it was to find these Peanut Butter Creme Oreos?  After weeks of searching for the Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo, the DAY I go looking for the prior ones it seemed like EVERY SINGLE STORE had replaced their peanut butter creme inventory with the new Limited Edition ones.  Seriously. I was like, did everyone just get together to eff with me?

Finally, I found the prior Peanut Butter Creme Oreos at a random CVS near my house that looks like it hasn’t has new snacks stocked in a while.  Yikes.

Prying these cookies open side by side, the obvious difference is that the prior Peanut Butter Crème Oreo has only peanut butter creme inside.  I tasted the peanut butter creme by itself – it was tasty.  More grainy than the cremes inside the new Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo.  There was a stronger PEANUT flavor, IMO…the inside creme almost tasted more like a marzipan, or like these de la Rosa peanut confections I like.  Tastes good, but definitely did not taste like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.  When I ate the cookie as a whole, there was a distinct difference in flavor. The prior Peanut Butter Creme Oreo tasted less like peanut butter and more like peanut confection inside the semi-sweet Oreo wafers.  The new Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreos tasted like…well, like candy.

Winner? The new Reese’s version, of course.  Although not bad, at all, they should stop making the Peanut Butter Creme Oreo – these new Reese’s ones blow them out of the water.

But how did these Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo compare to an ACTUAL Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup?  I needed to get to the bottom of this.

Here, you can see all three side by side by side.  Comparing the two varieties of Oreo was easy, but how can I compare the new Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo to the actual candy?  The solution – time for a little DIY action.

BAM!  Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo, YOU HAVE MET YOUR MATCH!  My very own, makeshift Reese’s Cup Oreo.  It was so hard to make too.  No, you can’t have the recipe.

Let’s get to tasting:

Let me just say, my homemade Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo was DAMN GOOD.  HUGE Reese’s flavor (I wonder why?) that fit nicely between the crunchy Oreo wafers.

It does make you wonder – this is probably how the new Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo came about.  Besides the obvious pairing, SOME EXEC over at Nabisco HAD to have sat at his desk one day and tried this, quickly dialed his admin, shouting, “JEEVES!  GET R & D ON THE PHONE!  I’VE CREATED A MONEY MACHINE!”

So how did these Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo REALLY stack up? Well, having eaten them side by side, my previous opinion was confirmed!  The flavors were almost exactly the same.  The one I made myself had obvious STRONGER Reese’s flavor, but I attribute that mainly to the ratio of candy innards to Oreo wafer being greater.  Flavor wise, I tasted the same peanut buttery confection and the same chocolate/peanut butter mix.  I got the same salty bites, and I got the same sugary aftertaste.  Both were VERY sweet.  But were heavenly.

So yeah, it’s DONE!  A true breakdown of all things Oreo, Reese’s and peanut butter.  If you can find the new Limited Edition Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreo (which, to be honest, THEY ARE EVERYWHERE NOW), you must try them.
