Review: Sweet Lemonade Peeps & So, April Fools Day…..Yeah…..

Junk Food Nation, everything you read today is a LIE!  Well, almost everything.  It is April Fools Days after all.  And everyone is in on it – Netflix with their new 20-minute movie called, Sizzling Bacon (which is just 20 minutes of, well, sizzling bacon).  Foodbeast has a post about Panda Express launching Broccoli Beef Milkshakes.  Turkey Hill’s “Just Goodies” line. And, of course, breakfast at Taco Bell.  What, that last one is REAL??? WTF, world.

I won’t be doing an April Fools joshing on this blog, because 1) I am really lazy, and 2) no, it’s really just the first reason.  I tried to think back to the best April Fools joke I ever pulled…one year I told a bunch of high school friends I got a girl pregnant. Yeah, they didn’t think it was funny.  Another year in college we filled a guy’s single full of crumbled newspaper from floor to ceiling.  That was funny, in sort of a 1950’s stuffy old college sort of way, right up there with putting sugar in someone’s gas tank. Funny in the “oh hey, you’ve ruined everything I own” sort of way.  He had black dust on EVERYTHING the rest of the week. Yeah, it was worth it.

What was the best April Fools joke you’ve ever pulled, or had pulled on you?  Tell me in the comments below.

Today’s junk food is, amazingly, not a joke: Sweet Lemonade Peeps!

Sweet Lemonade Peeps

Sweet Lemonade Peeps: The Money Shot

Sweet Lemonade Peeps. Peeps that taste like lemonade.  I feel like I’m being punked here.  Plus, the purchases support charity?  Am I allowed to make fun of these?

I’ve reviewed a lot of Peeps on this blog, and some have been good, some bad.  These…these I’m not sure about yet.

Sweet Lemonade Peeps: support cancer research!

I guess I’m glad that even candy companies are getting into charitable causes.  I’m surprised I haven’t seen more lemonade companies giving to this particular charity – but if you’re looking to see which products DO contribute to this cause, click here.

One serving is FIVE of these Sweet Lemonade Peeps?? I feel like there are times when I can barely stomach ONE Peep.

And there they are – Sweet Lemonade Peeps!  At first sniff, these marshmallow birds had a hint of lemon.  Also, as I pulled this tray out, I got yellow flaky sugar EVERYWHERE.  You got me, Peeps.  Now let me go get my dust buster…

Sweet Lemonade Peeps: STARING AT ME

The closeup of these Sweet Lemonade Peepers is kind of scary, no?  Cold lifeless eyes, staring at me.  LOOK AWAY.

Sweet Lemonade Peeps were, despite my terrible lighting, white flecked with yellow bits of sugar.  As I chewed one, it did indeed have lemonade flavor!  It was sweet, a little sour, and had a nice acidity.  Honestly, these tasted exactly like a sweet lemonade to me.  Typical Peep feel, too – sort of hard on the outside but squishy otherwise.

Now, whether this flavor was good on a Peep is a personal choice, i guess.  My friend the Foodette HATED these, finding the sweet acidic flavor to be overly intense and leaving a horrible aftertaste.  To me, the feeling left in my mouth mimicked the feeling after I drink a fresh glass of lemonade.

Very interesting, Peeps.  I liked these, but can see that they may not be for everyone.

PURCHASED AT: Walmart

COST: $1.08 (seriously.  A dollar and 8 cents.)

Read your 04/01/2012 entry. I would have felt sad, JunkFoodGuy. It would had been like I was losing a friend. Once my friends started having kids, it changed everything & it was like they were completely different people.
Not a peeps/marshmallow kind of guy but I do love lemonade. Can you recommend a great lemonade soda or drink for me, please? Stuff like CountryTime & Minute Maid in a can tastes so bitter & fake.

I want to eat the serving size all at once so the next day I can brag “I had five chicks at one time last night!!”

I like NPR’s April Fools gags, because it usually takes a long time to catch on. This morning they had a story about how Ukranians are arguing that _The Simpsons_ is funnier when dubbed in ukranian rather than russian. I still don’t if that was an april fools story or not!

Do they taste like real lemonade or Minute Maid Lemon-Flavored Water? Or (worse) Crystal Light? I’d be worried they tasted like Crystal Light.

I wonder if those are toasted maybe it would become more like a lemon meringue type?

YEARS ago. (omg look it was 2002 I still remember it!) she got me good… she did it by just being Martha

Sweet Lemonade Peeps are the bomb. OMG! It was like a mini bite of lemon merengue pie. I searched five stores the day after Easter to see if I could score a few more boxes. Alas! All gone. Maybe I can fill my hankering by ordering online, but I bet it will be a whole lot more than 1.08 a box.

    I WANT MORE LEMONADE PEEPS!

I bought these today after checking out the review of them on here and I kind of have to agree with what you said your friend said about the after taste. I like the peeps, but they’ve got this really WEIRD after taste. It’s like, it sticks in your mouth, right at the back of your throat/tongue. It’s not really bad, but it’s not good either. I prefer the bubblegum ones.
