Review (Video): New Ben & Jerry’s That’s My Jam Core Ice Cream & ZYRTEC-D, IOC??? C’mon now… (Other News)

Junk Food Nation, I woke up this morning, and it’s snowing out. Surprise, surprise. Let’s get to some news:

1) Lost in the closing days of the Winter Olympics was the Sweden-Canada Gold Medal game.  Well, lost to me, at least, as I stopped watching Olympic hockey once the US was out.  Anyways, one of Sweden’s players, Niklas Backstrom (a DC hometown hero!) was banned from playing in the Gold Medal game.  Why? DOPING! <ominous thunderclap>

But what nefarious drug was Backstrom taking???  Turns out, it was….. Zyrtec-D.  Wait, what? Zyrtec-D, the allergy medicine?  Zyrtec-D, WHICH THEY ADVERTISE ON TV?  To clear sinuses?  That Zyrtec-D?

WTF, IOC.  You didn’t let one of the stars of Sweden play in probably one of the greatest games of his life because he took allergy medicine?  Shame on you, IOC. That was BS.

2) Raymond Felton was recently arrested on gun charges when Felton’s soon-to-be-ex-wife (she filed for divorce last week) turned in a gun to the police that she found in the home. Whether you find her actions celebratory or conniving, here’s an interesting side tidbit.  Her name is Ariane Raymondo.  His name is Raymond Felton.  Raymond? Raymondo?  Does no one else think this is funny?  No?

3) Barry Bonds is going to be a guest instructor for the SF Giants?? My only advice: keep him away from the trainer’s room.

Today’s junk food: New Ben & Jerry’s That’s My Jam Core Ice Cream!

New Ben & Jerry’s That’s My Jam Core Ice Cream: The Money Shot

New Ben & Jerry’s That’s My Jam Core Ice Cream is one of the five Core flavors that Ben & Jerry’s has this year.  My friends at OnSecondScoop.com have reviews of a couple of their flavors right now: Karamel Sutra Core and Peanut Butter Fudge Core.  Me? I trended immediately to the Core flavor that had jelly in it.  Jelly in my belly!

The Core ice creams are basically pints of ice cream where, in the center, there is a solid (or semi-solid) “core” of something – fudge, caramel, or in the case of New Ben & Jerry’s That’s My Jam Core Ice Cream, jam!

New Ben & Jerry’s That’s My Jam Core Ice Cream, when opened, reveals its chocolate and its raspberry ice cream. You can see the fudge chips peeking out too.  But what does the CORE look like?  I filmed this video expose to help you out, Junk Food Nation:

BAM indeed.  Sigh.  I need to get better in front of the camera.

As you can see, the jame core of this New Ben & Jerry’s That’s My Jam Core Ice Cream runs RIGHT DOWN THE CENTER.  It was ooey-gooey.  Plain ol, red as blood, raspberry jam.

Up close, I could even spot the raspberry seeds in the jam.  This was legit.

New Ben & Jerry’s That’s My Jam Core Ice Cream: River of jam

So how did this New Ben & Jerry’s That’s My Jam Core Ice Cream taste? Well, like I said in the video, DAMN GOOD. I love fruit and chocolate, so the mix of raspberry jam and chocolate ice cream worked REALLY well for me.  The chocolate ice cream was basic.  The raspberry ice cream was lighter and creamy, with slight raspberry flavor.  The fudge chips were more like chocolate chunks to me, and gave some nice texture.

But really, this flavor was all about the jam.  When I was able to get a spoonful of chocolate ice cream, raspberry ice cream, jam, and fudge chip all together – NIRVANA.  The blend of the ice cream plus jam was really tasty, giving off a nice fruit and creme taste.  The jam was sweet, sort of tangy, and very fruit-y – FULL of raspberry flavor.   In a lot of ways, the jam made the raspberry ice cream side of things more relevant – the non-chocolate ice cream base helped make the fruit more creamy.  Honestly, what I ended up tasting was the same flavors of Neapolitan ice cream (which I love).

REALLY good Core flavor. If you like fruit and chocolate – must buy.

The jam looked like a mustache. I gotta give this a try.

  2. Devin says:

It definitely seems overly silly, but it’s up to the players to stay diligent on what they’re putting in their body. Even when it comes to something as simple as allergy medicine, he should have checked to make sure whether or not it was an approved substance.

@Devin: True. It just struck me since Zyrtec is SOOOO innocuous… it’s not like the argument was “It’s sold at GNC.” I mean, it’s sold at CVS.

i thought i was the only one who found the Raymond-Raymondo thing funny!

It would be nice if new flavors would start showing up around me>.<

I agree, this flavor is awesome! Just tried it. My only complaint is that the raspberry ice cream doesn’t really taste like raspberry…I actually thought it was just vanilla til I looked back at the description on the carton. But overall, it’s delicious!

  6. Robyn says:

This is delicious. And if you like chocolate and raspberry, no doubt, you will love it too!!

Ooooooohhhh. I love Ben and Jerry’s. I mean I LOVE Ben and Jerry’s. I have a weekly date with Ben and Jerry’s that makes my hubby jealous — my favorites being ‘Phish Food’ and ‘Cherry Garcia.’ However, I recently tried ‘That’s My Jam’ (one of the new line of Core flavors) and it blows every other flavor out of the water. Hooked after bite. I’ve had DREAMS about how delicious it is. When I went grocery shopping the next week after trying it, it seemed like every grocery store in the city of St. Louis wasn’t stocking it (and yes, I did go to multiple grocery stores looking for it). I was afraid it was a trial flavor and they’d discontinued it. TRAGEDY!… Until I realized that it wasn’t available because EVERYONE is just as hooked. Sooooooo delicious — a revolution of flavor. You seriously have to try it! That said, I’m looking forward to trying other Core flavors, especially Hazed and Confused (who doesn’t love Nutella?!?).

  8. Kristen says:

My boyfriend and I both get a flavor of B and J’s to split. When we watch a movie he’ll have a little bit of his ice cream, I’ll eat mine and then we switch so we don’t get bored. This flavor and the Hazelnut Core are our go to flavors. I actually overlooked this ice cream once because I thought it was strawberry jam ( I didn’t read the label, it was a quick grab and go kind of trip). I realized next time that it was Raspberry and it is amazing. The small chocolate pieces taste great with the jam!

  9. Jenna says:

Dear goodness, now all I can think of is making some Nutella ice cream and giving it a raspberry jam core, with some homemade jam.
