Review (x3!): Hannah Max Baking Cookie Chips (Original, Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon Sugar) & Blowing My Sports Wad (Fister, Zards, Ellsbury, Pistons)

Junk Food Nation, I had this whole post planned out – I was going to go on a rant about the whole Amazon.com/crazy drone thing.  But then the Yankees signed Jacoby Ellsbury, and my world got turned upside down.  I started going nuts, tweeting and texting and Facebook messaging people for opinions, reactions.  I watched ESPN West for an entire hour watching the idiot talking heads discuss the same thing over and over again.  My phone kept blowing up; the Junk Food Gal stared at me, and asked, “Who the hell keeps texting you??” I couldn’t form words; I just looked at her and yelled, “SPORTS!” Yep, I’m quite a catch.

Let’s recap what happened that resulted in me blowing my sports wad:

1) Nationals acquire Doug Fister from the Tigers for some players who are now dead to me: DUDE. Any baseball fan knows Fister is LEGIT.  He was the Tigers’ 3rd-4th best pitcher, he’s only 29 years old, and he’s moving from the AL to the NL.  What’s not to love? With Strasburg, Gio, Jordan Zimmerman, and now Fister, the Nats have the best rotation in the NL.  PERIOD.  I’m excited.

2) The Washington Wizards are at .500 for the first time since 2009:  With the win two nights ago, the Wizards are 9-9; .500 record for the first time in four years.  That’s crazy.  That means at no time in the past THREE years were they even 1-1!  Crazier still: If the playoffs were to begin today, the Wizards would be the #3 seed.  That means seeds 4-8 are all teams with LOSING RECORDS.  Still, I’ll take it! #GOZARDS.

3) The Detroit Pistons beat the Miami Heat: With the Wizards off last night, I watched the Miami-Detroit game, and Detroit pulled off a stunning upset!  The Heat were on a TEN GAME WIN STREAK, and they get beat by the Detroit Pistons; not a bad team, per se, but definitely one that’s young and rebuilding.  I don’t even hate the Heat or Lebron anymore – but I still got into rooting for D-town, cheering my head off with 4:00min left.  And then, while this was happening, I learned…

4) THE YANKEES SIGN JACOBY ELLSBURY. SAY WHAAAAAAA?? Ok, first off, you’ll have to ask my Dad and my colleague Corey – I said weeks ago that I wanted J.E. in pinstripes.  Great defense, good bat, top of the lineup OBP and speed, and used to playing on a big stage.  AND THEN IT HAPPENED. After coming off the Fister and Wizards high and then getting my adrenaline ramped up again watching the Pistons, this news sent me over the edge. Is this Johnny Damon, part 2???

Now, does the Ellsbury signing mean my favorite player, Robbie Cano, is gone?  ESPN was undecided.  So while I was prepared to write a whole post entitled, “The Ballad of Robbie Cano,” I will refrain for now.  Still, it still burned when my friend Jen tweeted: “Cyber Monday sale on Ellsburys! Use code CHEAPERTHANCANO” Ouch.

So yes.  By 11:00pm last night, my head was spinning and is still spinning.  I mean, my sports fan readers – thoughts? I’m looking at you, John C.

Today’s junk food: Hannah Max Baking Cookie Chips!

Hannah Max Baking Cookie Chips: The Money Shot

Hannah Max Baking Cookie Chips!  I’d reviewed their Sea Salt Peanut Butter flavor a while back, and I enjoyed them.  Hannah Max saw my review and sent me three more flavors…er….like, 10 months ago.  Yikes.  Sorry, Hannah Max.  These bags somehow got lost in the pile of junk food in my kitchen corner.

But the general spiel: this company is woman-owned, environment friendly, and kosher with no trans fats. And, apparently, they are also SUCCESSFUL. Since writing about Hannah Max, I’ve now seen this company EVERYWHERE, especially in my local grocery stores.  So, nice work, Hannah Max!  Let’s get to tasting these three flavors, shall we?

(Note – Hannah Max has another TWO flavors, Oatmeal Raisin, and Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, which were not sent to me originally).

First: ORIGINAL!

Hannah Max Baking Original Cookie Chips: Flaky and buttery!

These Hannah Max Baking Original Cookie Chips were very very tasty.  These Cookie Chips were thin and flaky, and had a light crunch.  The thin lightness of these cookies made them chip-like, in that I felt like I could pick up two-three at a time and pop them in my mouth (which probably, added together, equaled how much dough are in regular cookies).  Still, the thinness gave them a wonderful crunch.

As for taste, these Cookie Chips had a nice buttery sweetness to them. Unlike some sugar cookies I’ve had recently, the vanilla flavor in these was muted.  Instead, they basically tasted like a sugar cookie that had a slightly darker flavor, perhaps due to the use of brown sugar.  The bag smelled caramel-y, to be honest.  But the flavor was all sugar cookie.  Really well executed.

Next up: Hannah Max Baking Chocolate Chip Cookie Chips!

Hannah Max Baking Chocolate Chip Cookie Chips were also very good, and I’ll tell you why.  First, when the bag was opened, the smell of chocolate immediately wafted out.  Pretty awesome.  The cookie chips were similar to the Original variety – nice and thin, and very crunchy to the munch.

The flavor was pretty standard – a buttery cookie with chocolate flavor.  But the reason WHY these were so good, to me, at least, was because they really reminded me of chocolate chip cookies I’ve baked myself.  Ever make a batch of cookies, and depending on what type of mix you use, some come out tasty but sort of hard, and crunchy, and with a buttery edge that sticks to the roof of your mouth?  That’s what THESE remind me of!  And I really do mean that in a good way. Hannah Max has captured that realistic home baked flavor.

Finally, let’s look at: Hannah Max Baking Cinnamon Sugar Cookie Chips!

When I opened up and sniffed this bag of Hannah Max Baking Cinnamon Sugar Cookie Chips, I swear it basically smelled like French Toast.  Cinnamon French Toast.  Love it.  Like the other two, the texture and crunch was wonderful.  These cookie chips were clearly designed to mimic Snickerdoodles.

Munching a good number of them, they did indeed remind me of Snickerdoodles – they were buttery and had plenty of cinnamon flavor.  There was no molasses flavor, really, and that was ok.  These cookies were actually more sugary, IMO, than Snickerdoodles – the aftertaste was nice and sugary, there wasn’t any of that cinnamon spice linger which I sometimes enjoy.  Still, very good, well executed cookies.

So there you have it!  Thanks again to Hannah Max for giving me a chance to try these.  I would DEF buy them again, since they are always on sale at my grocery.

Usually on these multi-flavor reviews, I like to rank the ones I liked the best, but honestly, I found these all to be pretty good.  Just go for the flavor you like the most, and you won’t be sorry.

“SPORTS!!!”

PURCHASED AT: Sent to me, but you can buy them at THESE STORES.

Love all the Detroit sports references/shoutouts/discussion!

  2. Jen says:

Now, what to do with the other $150 million we saved? Is it time for a new stadium yet?

  3. Did you know today is National Cookie Day? So this review is not only awesome, it’s timely! 🙂

  4. jrdunn says:

I liked Jacoby in Boston (I’m a diehard Sox fan) But for a guy who is built around speed, what do you expect of him when he’s 35, 36 or 37?

  5. Steve says:

Jacoby is a stupid signing. Not stupid good, stupid stupid. Look at his numbers — they are almost identical to Brett Gardner, who is already on the roster and is less expensive. Don’t believe me? Here you go:

    Gardner (2013): 81 runs, 147 hits, 8 hr, 52 rbi, 24 sb, .273 avg., .344 obp, .416 slg
    Ellsbury (2013): 92 runs, 172 hits, 9 hr, 53 rbi, 52 sb, .298 avg., .355 obp, .426 slg

Now to their salaries — in 2013, Gardner made $2.85 million. Ellsbury made $9 million. Are you telling me that 11 runs, 25 hits and 28 stolen bases are worth over $6 million? I don’t think so.

These guys are so interchangeable that they were both born in 1983 (18 days apart) and they are within 10 lbs and 3 inches of each other in weight and height.

The long and short of it is that the Yankees are paying a ton of money for a player they already have!

  6. Sarah says:

Oh, I bought the chocolate chip cookies last week at Jungle Jim’s. But I’m really trying to save them for the Christmas goodie spread. I’m glad to see you liked them!

  7. Steve says:

@junkfoodguy: That’s what you need — 2 out of 3 outfielders producing 17 total home runs. Woo hoo!

(Although Jacoby is a lefty, so he should benefit from the short porch in right field, as will Brian McCann. Of course, Gardner is a lefty too and he only hit 8 dingers last year.)

  8. Huge money for an increasingly fragile player? How unlike the Yankees.

sports sports sports cookies sports cookies cookies sports sports 😀

Just bought my 3rd, 4th, and 5th bags of Gingerbread m&ms to stash away…somehow they have really grown on me.

  9. Nathaniel Bates says:

stupid signing but we all knew the yankees needed to get younger with some talent so obviously they were going to sign the most expensive young player and taking a player away from the redsox again (i.e johny damon) is another plus. I think it was stupid, he will definetly get injured and who knows how many games hes going to play. i need the redsox signing back napoli

  10. Dwight says:

Hi junk food guy! I love the cookie chips you wrote about above, but here in Los Angeles they are more rare than golden goose eggs! I’ve waisted more gas trying to find these cookies than I would have spent had I just purchased them directly from the company that makes them. I’m pleased to read they are made by enviornmently friendly people. I’m glad you were able to enjoy them because I have been on a serious fein for them since discovering them at my moms house and she just so happened to get them from a Ross store on clearance. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Dwight- well, sounds like you need to get a big order online going! LOL – yeah I brought a bunch of them to my office, and they LOVED them.

  11. Janet Ramage says:

Loved your Chocolate chip crunchy cookie chips and would buy again but they are just tooooooooooo sweet. If you can cut down on the sugar let me know, they are delicious and crunch otherwise. I will try different flavors when the sugar is less. Janet
