Review: Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos, Striving for Excellence, and WriteGirl!

Junk Food Nation, I’m about to get all serious on you.  You guys know I’m an attorney in my every day life, right?  Well, in case you didn’t – I’m an attorney in my every day life.  Attending law school here in DC, I’ve been able to attend some pretty cool events (at least to my nerdy legal self), and last night I had the privilege of meeting Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.  Personally, I thought she was awesome.  Whether you agree or disagree with her legal viewpoints, it’s pretty awesome to meet someone who is essentially at the pinnacle of your profession.  And she said some pretty inspiring things last night, and one stuck that I wanted to share with you. I’m paraphrasing, but the gist was: “you can be more than where you started.”

That really resonated with me. I, like many of you, spend my days just trying to survive.  Just trying to get through the day, since my energy is limited. Some days are good, some days are bad, and whether I’m talking about my job, my relationships, or this blog, I admittedly fall into this routine where I think “Just keep above water. Just stay afloat.  Tomorrow’s a new day; cherish what you have.” And that’s true.  But I appreciated the reminder that I can always be better, I can always set an example, that while on any given day it might take all my energies to just survive that day, there is nothing wrong with striving for greater heights, there is nothing wrong with demanding more of myself.  There have been moments where it was the right decision for me to step back and appreciate what life has given me. But Justice Sotomayor reminded me that I need to take care to not confuse appreciation with complacency.  Strive for that excellence, Nation – in whatever you’re doing.

And SPEAKING of people striving for greater heights, I wanted to pimp Actor Sis’ non-profit that she works for called WriteGirl!  Basically, it’s an organization in LA that uses mentoring and creative writing to help empower teen girls.  Pretty awesome, right?  And even more – WriteGirl has a 100% success rate in guiding these girls to high school graduation!  NOW THAT’S REALLY AWESOME.  100%??  I can’t get 100% of my friends to agree where to have dinner, much less lead a gaggle of teen girls to getting their high school diploma.  This program…it’s a good thing.

But the big news really is – drumroll – WriteGirl is a FINALIST for the 2013 National Arts & Humanities Youth Program Awards given by the White House!  BIG TIME.  Anyways, if you have a second, go here to learn about the WriteGirl, or go here to donate to their cause, and go here to learn more about this award that they’ve been nominated for.  Proud of my Actor Sis’ involvement with WriteGirl, and proud of WriteGirl!

Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos: The Money Shot

Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos!  MAKES SENSE TO ME.  These are not new, of course, the Impulsive Buy reviewed them a couple years back, and apparently they’ve been around since 2008, but they are new to me, and I WANT TO EAT THEM.  So I bought them.  So there.

Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos

Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos: Red and White make mint…

How are Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos different than Cool Mint Oreos? No clue.  But I like the idea that the creme has some sort of candy crunch in it.  Why NOT get some extra sugar in there for good measure?

Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos: MINTY WAFTING

As soon as I opened up this package of Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos, the smells of chocolate and mint came wafting out.  Was it candy cane smell? I mean, I guess so – it was a minty peppermint smell.  Reminded me a LOT of how Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies smell when I opened the package!  Awesome.

Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos: Red and white make….?

Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos contained a pretty clear divide of red and white creme, and you could SEE the little candy cane bits…if that’s what they were.  I’m convincing myself that’s what they were.  See, let’s take a closer look…

Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos: BITS OF CANDY CANE!

I bit into one (ok, lie, I bit into a whole bunch of these) Limited Edition Candy Cane Oreos, and I LOVED THEM.  But basically – they tasted like a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie!  I think they were minty enough, as they had a nice peppermint taste to them that was refreshing, and then when it mixed with the standard Oreo cookie, the chocolate mint flavor was excellent.  I mean, they sort of felt like a Thin Mint too, where the creamy inside of this cookie “felt” the same in my mouth as the melty chocolate exterior of a Thin Mint.

Did I taste the candy sprinkle crunch?  WHY YES I DID, THANKS.  I liked it – while I’m not sure it added flavor (I’m betting they were just sugar sprinkles), I thought the added texture helped remind me that these were not just mint Oreos, but CANDY CANE OREOS.

So yes. Loved them. Go buy them.  Now, before it’s too late!  Or…just wait til next holiday season.  They’ll be back then.
