Remembering 9/11

Junk Food Nation, it’s 9/11.  Those who have read my blog for the past two years know that I was living in New York City on 9/11.  If you’re new to my blog, I’d like to share my story of that day with you.  You can read it here.  So today, there will be no junk food review, and no useless banter on sports, news, or saturated fats.

As I said two years ago, my story is “…rather long, so if you’re not interested, totally cool … But if you’d like to learn a little more about your friendly neighborhood Junk Food Guy, read on.”

On 9/11/2001, it was actually a nice day out.  The skies were clear. Apparently, the 8:51 a.m. temperature reading was 68°F at Central Park, 72°F at La Guardia, and 73°F at both JFK and Newark Airports. It was such a pleasant backdrop to such a bad day.

It was a day that affected us all differently. It jarred people, mentally and emotionally.  It spurred people into military service, into reconnecting with loved ones, into pain and into perspective.  As for me, I was just a scared kid in New York City armed only with a clock radio:

My clock radio, that I still own to this day.

My story did not end in tragedy, and in no way do I pretend that I suffered at all compared to people who had genuine loss and grief in their lives.  No, just consider my two-years-ago post a small side story about how 9/11 affected me in a really random (but to me, significant) way.

Each year, I wake with a heavy heart as I think of all who perished that day.  I cannot stop thinking about the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who served on that day and for many days after. We honor them by never forgetting, and always moving forward.

Sincerely,

Junk Food Guy

Ps: Be back tomorrow with plenty of snark, don’t you worry.

I hadn’t read your 9/11 story before, so thanks for posting it. I was a freshman in high school, where we had 90 minute classes. During my first class, we were involved in doing a science experiment, so we didn’t know that anything was amiss. It was quite a shock when I walked into my civics class at 9:30 and saw it on the tv. I remember that I was oddly frustrated that the day was so beautiful, because it just didn’t seem fair that something so ugly happened on a perfect September morning.

@Linny: Thanks for reading! I share your sentiment…it was such a lovely day, weather wise. Man… I still get chills thinking about it
