Review: Ruffles Ultimate Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Cheese Potato Skins Chips & Calvin Harris Made $46 Million? Excuse Me?

Junk Food Nation, I know my site has been running slow lately.  No idea why, since honestly, I haven’t changed anything significant.  MAYBE I’M GETTING SO MANY READERS MY WEBSITE IS JUST OVERWHELMED.  Er, maybe.  Or maybe my coding sucks.  One of the two.  anyways, I’m working on it – thanks for your patience.  Just let the page load – I swear it’ll come up eventually.

Second, I was read recently that Calvin Harris, a DJ, made $46 million dollars last year, becoming the highest paid DJ in the world.  Let me say that again – A DJ MADE $46 MILLION DOLLARS LAST YEAR.  Wait, what? A DJ made more than Jay-Z, more than Beyonce, more than Peyton Manning, more than Derek Jeter, more than Kobe Bryant?  Am I hearing this right?

I mean, does this shock anyone else? I know music is popular, but I expected the actual artists to make the most, not the guy playing shows at a pool full of chicks in Vegas.  46 mill is more than some companies make…and one dude twisting knobs makes this?  Run DMC has GOT to be pissed.

Today’s junk food: Ruffles Ultimate Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Cheese Potato Skins Chips!

I think it’s safe to express, on behalf of everyone: Dude, Ruffles…knock it off.  I mean, I don’t know about anyone else, but I personally think this Ruffles Ultimate line is NOT the greatest.  I’ve reviewed every single flavor so far, and there have been mixed results.  Even if they got the flavor right, I do NOT know why Ruffles thinks we need bigger ridges.

Plus, this flavor has been done before…BY FRITO-LAY!  First they had their regular Ruffles Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Cheese Potato Skins Chips.  Then came the Ruffles MAX Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Cheese Potato Skins Chips.  And now Ruffles Ultimate Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Cheese Potato Skins Chips????

Let’s just get to the heart of these Ruffles Ultimate Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Cheese Potato Skins Chips.  The taste is not surprising, because it’s the SAME FLAVORING they used on the Ruffles Max chips.  Chees-y. Onion-y. Good bacon flavor. Good bit of smoke. Good balance, a slight sour cream tang and creaminess.  Nothing too unexpected, and that’s the problem.

I felt this was a cop-out chip.  They just took the same flavor profile and added it to this big ridge chip.  Nothing unique about it except for the chip structure itself, and personally, I DON’T LOVE THESE BIG RIDGES.  I know ultimately it doesn’t matter after being crunched, but the bigger ridges made this chip even CRUNCHIER.  But not in a nice crisp, kettle-cooked way – instead these felt VERY processed, and full of oil.  Ridges like this aren’t natural, and they are hard to cut, so I’m convinced that these chips are constructed this way – pressed and cut.

I dunno.  Flavor – yes, it was fine. But I just felt that I was OVER IT while eating these chips.  Sorry, Ruffles.  Maybe I’m just in a mood – but I didn’t love these.

I saw the MAX Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Cheese Potato Skins chips (the 2 1/2 oz. size) at a Walgreen’s on Michigan Ave (aka Mag Mile) in Chicago last month. I hadn’t seen that in a year!
So that one is still there depending where you live and which place sells them.

  2. Shorneys says:

As the folks from Deadspin said of the ENTIRE LINE: “Do not eat them. Don’t ever eat them. Ever. They are awful, disgusting, hateful garbage; if they were a prank, no sane person in full possession of his or her faculties would ever fall for them. Don’t eat them. Never eat them. Not ever. Never. Eat them not. Be not an eater of them.” link.

    I am inclined to agree.

…That said, what if you made faux potato skins out of these? Like, sprinkled on cheddar, chives, and bacon and heated these under the broiler before glopping on some sour cream? Would that work? Or would that just be stupid?
