Junk Food Guy Request: Twinkie Knockoffs!

Junk Food Nation, in place of my normal Monday review, I have a request to make of all of you.  Recently, I was on KABC 790 Talk Radio, an AM station in Los Angeles, discussing the return of the Twinkie, which, if you didn’t know, is set to return to the shelves on July 15.

During that interview, which you can listen to streaming HERE (my section begins at the 6 minute, 45 second mark) or you can download HERE, the host mentioned that many other companies had created Twinkie knockoffs to fill the void left by Hostess. To be honest, I’d seen some around, but didn’t notice anything specifically.

And then during my last visit to my local Safeway grocery, I spotted two such knockoffs immediately:

I dream of Twinkies?

Tastykake, a HUGE Hostess competitor, apparently has released Dreamies, a creme filled sponge cake.  Look familiar?

Watching out for Twinkie knockoffs?

Weight Watchers has these Golden Sponge Cakes, filled with Creme.  C’mon, since when were Twinkies EVER part of a Weight Watchers diet?

So my request to all of YOU out there is to help me find OTHER Twinkies knockoffs!  Leave a comment, Email me, Tweet Me, Facebook Message me photos, names of products, etc.  I WANT TO KNOW EVERY SUCH ITERATION OF TWINKIE KNOCKOFF THERE IS!  Please.

Happy Monday!  GO FORTH AND TRACK DOWN THESE TWINKIE IMPERSONATORS!

Thoughts? Please comment below or hit me up on Twitter @junkfoodguy or LIKE my Facebook Page and message me there. Also, you can always email me at junkfoodguy@junkfoodguy.com. Let’s hang.

Sincerely,

Junk Food Guy

The weight watchers one has been around for years http://ronisweigh.com/2008/10/product-review-weight-watchers-golden-sponge-cake.html Don’t ask me why I know this…

  2. Kahnfusius says:

I once heard about a Twinkie that was “thirty-five feet long, weighing approximately six hundred pounds.” That’s a big Twinkie.

  3. Mal K says:

Little Debbie has cloud cakes which are pretty similar to twinkies

As a new groupie of your blog I attempted to satisfy your request 🙂 This first one isn’t really a Twinkie (TM) knock off, but it’s twinkie-esque which I’m hoping will make for some interesting times and possibly a food review! http://www.tastykake.com/

Now for the real delivery of a twinkie impersonator:

Bimbo, which lost out on the bidding for the Twinkie brand, may be planning to bake up an imitation of the iconic product.

    The Twinkie war is on.
