Review: Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos & One Thought Regarding Nik Wallenda’s Skywire Act…

Junk Food Nation, two nights ago Nik Wallenda became the first man to walk across the Grand Canyon (across a section that was over four football fields in length) on a tightrope WITHOUT a tether.  Twitter exploded with support, jokes, mocks, and praises.  If you were following my own Twitter feed, you saw plenty of jests.  There were plenty of tweets about how amazing the act was (it was), Wallenda’s constant religious references (which, jests aside, I respect – do what you gotta do, man), and the fact that he was wearing jeans the whole time (c’mon UnderArmour…you shoulda stepped up with some wick-away gear!)

But the extra point I wanted to mention was the fact that Wallenda was walking at a height about the same as the top of the Empire State Building (1500 plus feet) , yet the show pointed out that there was a paramedic at the base of the canyon, “just in case.”  UM, JUST IN CASE WHAT.  We can all agree that if you fall from 1500 feet…you’re cooked, right?  I mean, there IS no resuscitating, because you’re a pancake.  What’s the paramedic going to do??? Is this some sort of insurance coverage bit, something to add drama to the scene?  I have some friends who are paramedics and are amazing medical professionals, but it’s kind of hard to help someone when you’re in more than one piece.  ICK.

I mean, what do you think the paramedics below were thinking.  Just looking at each other and shrugging the whole time?  Do you think they knew they were just there for show?  They’d be better off with a big trampoline down there, trying to catch Wallenda like a cartoon.  Ridiculous.

Anyways, the paramedics weren’t needed, and clearly Nik Wallenda made my jaw drop.  Incredible act, worthy of a lot of praise.

Today’s junk food: Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos!

Limited Edition Strawberries n' Creme Oreos

Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos: The Money Shot

Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos were found at Walmart around the same time that I tracked down the Watermelon Oreos at Target.  Honestly, I couldn’t believe my luck – two flavors that I had been searching and searching for, and I found both in the same weekend??  SCORE.

Limited Edition Strawberries n' Creme Oreos

Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos: I don’t really dip strawberries in creme

Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos are shown to have pink and white icing inside, in front of a strawberry that has been dipped in some generic white substance.  You know, I remember all those commercials that showed people dipping strawberries directly into a Cool Whip container…I never did that.  Ever.  Was I missing out?  I mean, I’ve had strawberry parfaits before, I’ve sipped strawberries into sugar, into chocolate…but is fruit and Cool Whip some kind of amazing combo?  Tell me.

Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos: MMMM love that…Red 40 Lake coloring…

Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos, unsurprisingly, have no actual strawberry in them.

Coming into this cookie, I wondered how they would compare to the still existing line of Berry Burst Ice Cream Oreos.  I really enjoyed those, because the filling was full of berry flavor and I likened it to tasting actual strawberry ice cream.  Would these hold up?

Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos: Looks…like a candy cane

When I peeled back the top of these Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos, there was no strawberry smell.  I leaned in closer.  Still no strawberry smell.  Placed my nose right up to the cookie.  Nada.  Well, at least I’m glad Oreo isn’t spraying these with some false aroma…that ploy is sometimes rather nauseating.  I’m looking at you, Subway. (Just kidding.  I love the bread smell…that seems to permeate every pore of my body when I walk by one of those shops).

Limited Edition Strawberries n' Creme Oreos

Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos: Sort of looks like a creme-dipped strawberry!

Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos have two kinds of creme: pink and white.  I tasted the white creme by itself.  It was a little waxier than the traditional Oreo creme.  Sweet, vanilla.  Sweet but no added flavor.

The pink creme definitely had a strawberry flavor, similar to the Berry Burst creme, but definitely less ice-cream-y with a distinct strawberry flavor (not some amorphous “berry” taste).  This was also sort of waxy.

Together…I GUESS this is what strawberries and creme tastes like?  A very vanilla-y muted strawberry flavor.

Eaten all together, white creme, pink creme, and dark cookie, these Limited Edition Strawberries n’ Creme Oreos were…..OK.  That’s really all I can give these: an OK.  A “fine.”  A “good.”  And this is coming from me, someone who LOVES the mix of fruit and chocolate?

Why just good, and not great? It really came down to not enough strawberry flavor for me to mix with the strong Oreo cookie semi-sweet flavor.  The already muted creme meant that the strawberry taste was extra creamy and thus-thinned, and when thrown into the cookie mix, the strawberry flavor was present but not bold enough for my taste.

Would I eat these again? Sure. Would I buy them again? Probably not.  I would opt to buy the Berry Burst ones first.

Personally, I don’t really get all the hype about it. I guess it’s kinda impressive, but I honestly think most people are just watching in the chance that he does go splat. The fact that this got way higher ratings (despite being on cable, no less) than his last stunt (where he had to use protection) kinda reinforces this theory to me.

Or maybe I’m just cynical. 🙂

    • junkfoodguy says:

@devin- not cynical at all, I think it’s fair to say we all have a morbid curiosity. He got 13 million viewers … 13 million! Has to be the highest Discovery ever had…

  2. Nick Rovo says:

I was disappointed he didn’t fall. Like way more disappointed than any human should be. I really was considering looking up bets on his stunt. There had to be some prop bets out there which I would’ve more than likely lost.

  3. Sarah says:

Strawberries in cool whip is ok, but whipped cream is really where it’s at. Cool whip is a little too “thin” to really stand up to the strawberry, it ends up tasting sort of weak and you always feel like you need more on your strawberry.

  4. Carrie says:

Try strawberries dipped in sourcream and brown sugar. YUM!

  5. Linny says:

I swear, Oreos are the the Duggars of the cookie world.

  6. Will says:

I didn’t see it, but I heard that wallenda’s wife and little kids where watching. Does anyone else thinks that’s a little selfish. What if he did fall, his wife and kids could watch him fall to his death. Then his kids have no father. That sounds real fair to me!

  7. EowynofRohan says:

I hate to say this JunkFoodGuy, but he actually walked a canyon NEAR the grand canyon. I was disappointed too. He wants to try walking between two skyscrapers in NYC, but the police said no way.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@EofR- just read that! Well boo. Still impressive. Funny about the police response to his skyscraper request… He’ll just have to go to another country and do it !!

  8. John C. says:

Hmm…seems like Oreo committed one fatal flaw with these cookies- the traditional strawberries and creme desserts (aka strawberry shortcakes) are supposed to be done on vanilla cake. What an idiotically missed opportunity to play up on their other cookie color. Or, god forbid, offer the flavor in both!
