In Stores Now & UM, I’M TRYING TO GET OFF, SUBWAY DRIVER

Junk Food Nation, one of my favorite (and admittedly most useless) pastimes is complaining about the local subway system, the DC Metro. Yes, i am one of those disgruntled thousands who trudge on the subway each day to work, grumbling about its inefficiencies on a daily basis, while contributing nothing to the solution. I admit it.

Yesterday morning, however, I witnessed ANOTHER annoying sight on the Metro. Trains were delayed and backed up; typically when this happens, the Metro platforms fill up as more people accumulate with no trains arriving at the stations.  Once the clog/delay is alleviated, Metro then tries to send its backed up trains through the tunnels as fast as possible to accommodate these clogged stations.  Naturally, once a train arrives after a lengthy wait, there are a TON of people trying to get on. Metro loudspeaker warnings are given: “Please don’t crowd the trains, there are several cars right behind this one.”

To reinforce this message, the train will pull up, open their doors for a set time period (30 seconds?) and close them to try to speed to the next station, such that it’s not blocking the (potentially empty) train right behind it. All of this, presumably, make sense.

Yesterday, however, the particular train I was on was driven by a particularly ornery driver, who was essentially opening the doors for TEN SECONDS, and then trying to shut them BEFORE EVERYONE HAD GOTTEN *OFF* THE TRAIN. Again, people who had arrived at their destination and were trying to OFFLOAD the train only to be met by metal and glass doors snipping the tide of people walking off the train, trapping a few people onboard.  WTF.

Look, I know you have a schedule to keep, Metro driver, but what lesson are you teaching here? People are TRYING to get off.  They don’t want to be on the train! And if you’re trying to subliminally nudge people to get off the train faster, what result – you want me to start shoving people out of the way?  That’s safe.

Please. Please. Please. Just hold your horses a little bit.  I know you’re eager to get things moving. But how about you use some common EFFING sense.

Let’s take a look at what I’ve seen in stores recently:

In Stores Now

@ Giant Food

I feel like these Mike and Ike Limited Edition Strawberry Reunion candies are the result of the whole “Mike breaking up with Ike” campaign that NO ONE PAID ATTENTION TO.  “We’re back to making great tasting candy.”  Um….did you go somewhere before?  zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

In Stores Now

@ Giant Food

Angry Birds Star Wars candy???? May the Force…be with the marketing department.  Wow.

In Stores Now

@ Walgreens

While Bacon Jerky DOES sound bodacious, I’m wondering what the heck is going on with Wild Bill’s feet.  Shriveled stumps of yuck.  I didn’t buy these simply because of THAT.

In Stores Now

@ Safeway

OOOOOOOOOOOOO Turkey Hill All Natural Limited Batch Butter Almond and Chocolate.  The picture is kind of weird though…makes it look like there are kernels of corn in the dessert.  Yikes.

In Stores Now

@ Wegmans

Keebler Fudge Dipped Ice Cream Cones?  Makes sense to me.  Why not have the fudge go ALL THE WAY DOWN though?  THINK, Keebler.  Think.

In Stores Now

@ Wegmans

OREO CONES.  Now we’re talking. Although…is the only thing “Oreo” about these the chocolate base to the dough that makes the cones?  No creme filling that comes with it? Lame.

In Stores Now

@ Wegmans

…………drool……………… now this is more like it.  Gulp. Why I’m not eating THESE every day of my life, I’ll never know.

In Stores Now

@ Wegmans

I know these Yankees baseball flavors have been around for a while, but this is the first time I’ve seen it!  Bronx Bombers Sundae!  Fun fact (for me): Last night Mariano Rivera blew a save without recording an out for the 1st time in his career. IN HIS CAREER. Not bad.

In Stores Now

@ Wegmans

Pinstripe Brownie Blast looks amazing too.  Do other baseball teams have ice cream flavors?  Ice cream experts, let me know!

In Stores Now

@ Wegmans

Lady Liberty Mint looks good, and it’s interesting to think of the Statue of Liberty being made of minty confection.  Pretty sure if I licked it, it wouldn’t taste minty at all.

In Stores Now

@ Safeway

Ugh, Cotton Candy-flavored things are some of my least favorite, right up there with bubblegum flavored things. And plus, I don’t know what Rockin’ Poppin’ Cotton Candy means, since cotton candy does not normally rock or pop.  Friendly’s…you’re weird.

@ Giant Food

Just in time for Fourth of July!  PATRIOT PRETZELS.  Just to piss the French off, right Snyder’s???

We saw all those ice creams at Wegman’s last time we went. Chalked up the NY centrism to corporate policy. It’s not going to play in our household.

“Why not have the fudge go ALL THE WAY DOWN though?”

Because the fudge would melt on your fingers and become gross, I assume.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Lindemann: Yeah, it was weird to see NYY stuff being sold in VA. I agree – I can’t imagine huge sales.

And if the fudge is melting, it means you’re not eating fast enough! lol.

Also, I initially read the headline to this post as a “That’s what she said”.

Ice cream information time! The cones are far from new but the oreo ones are pretty good. They’re essentially just the wafer in a thinner crispier form. Oreo rolls aren’t really new but I guess that brand just got the memo to make them. I felt like Dubba reviewed one but I can’t find it. He did loss one in the storm of 2011 and funny its the same brand in your photo so they might want to remove the new already=p http://www.onsecondscoop.com/2011/11/state-of-freezer-address-empty-edition.html Turkey Hill has a bunch of sports team flavors http://turkeyhill.com/products/sports-flavors.aspx Graham Slam is by far the best one I’ve had but I can only get it when I’m visiting family in Pennsylvania. Perry’s also makes sport team flavor including a Bills one http://www.perrysicecream.com/buffalo-bills-brownie-blitz/?page=productsNav It’s funny how you found Lady Liberty and yet I can’t and I LIVE in New York… Okay, I think that’s all for now.

  4. Kahnfucius says:

The Mike & Ike’s look like they pulled off Darth Maul’s face to make the packaging. Maybe trying for an Angry Birds tie-in?

  5. Anna says:

The Phillies have a Turkey Hill flavor called Graham Slam. It’s graham flavored ice cream with chocolate marshmallow cup peices & a graham swirl. 🙂

  6. Shorneys says:

My Red Sox have six Hood flavors.
Bosox Brownie, Grand Slam Vanilla, Fenway Fudge, Green Monster Mint, Peanut Butter Nation, and Comeback Caramel. Each has milk chocolate Sox pieces. Link

By the way, those Snyders pretzel stars look exactly like the pretzel skeleton of the Rold Gold Peppermint Dipped Snowflakes. Maybe Snyders will come out with a dipped snowflake shape this year for the holidays?

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Shorneys: WOW. Some of those Red Sox flavors look awesome. Hood vs Turkey Hill?

    • Nick Rovo says:

@ Eric, I was planning a brownie showdown between the yanks/sox flavors from th and hood until the th flavor disappeared from the store I found it at. Such a good idea dashed by my grocery store.

  7. Will says:

Anyone try the th flavor for the steelers. It looks good.
That’s the only team flavor I can’t get. Of course I would have trouble eating because I the the steelers

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Will: What is the Steelers flavor?

    • Shorneys says:

Blitzburgh Crunch from Turkey Hill: “sweet cream vanilla ice cream with chocolate cake crunchies and crunchy chocolate cookie swirl.”

I really want a compendium of all of the major sports teams’ ice cream tie-ins. Somebody get on this.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Shorneys: AGREEE!!! Although I feel like one of the ice cream experts should do this…

  8. Kel says:

So, I finally caved and bought one of the Oreo Ice Cream Rolls. Not as awesome as I expected, but I’d been craving it for about 9 months, so there’s the expectations problem. PS. It’s much cheaper at Safeway than Giant. No idea why.

  9. Kel says:

The kid in me wanted to, but the adult in me counseled moderation. Still, I ate about 3/8, as did Kate, and there’s an end sitting all by its lonesome in the freezer.
