Review: New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato & The Winner of the Star Wars/Pringles Giveaway Is & Which Is The Better Bay? Round 2!

Junk Food Nation, it’s time for Round 2 of “Which Is The Better Bay?” A little while ago we debated Michael Bay vs. Old Bay. This time I’d like to ask: Which Is The Better Bay? The Bay of Pigs or Skip Bayless?

Now I realize this is tough. It’s tough especially because the term “better” is not really what you want to use as the modifier here, is it?  The Bay of Pigs was was a failed invasion/overthrow attempt on Fidel Castro’s regime by a group of counter revolutionaries who were trained by the US CIA.  It was noted as a huge embarrassment for the US government and a failure of foreign policy.

Meanwhile, Skip Bayless is a talking head on ESPN who spouts off against Stephen A. Smith on ESPN First Take, a daily ESPN 2 sports morning talk program.  He is a loud annoying troll who is extremely arrogant and loves to hype Tim Tebow and bash LeBron James.

So, I guess in determining which is worse, you’re ultimately saying which is…better?  So let me know below in the comments. WHICH IS THE BETTER BAY!?

Also, time to get to the winner of the Star Wars / Pringles Giveaway.  Thanks to all who participated and entered!  Using the random number generator at Random.org, I assigned every entry a number, clicked the button, and found my winner:

Today’s junk food: New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato!

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato: The Money Shot

FINALLY!  I’d seen a bunch of the other Häagen-Dazs Gelato flavors online and in stores, but none of those really interested me.  The Black Cherry Amaretto and this New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato were the only two of the new flavors I was interested in, AND I COULDN’T FIND THE LIMONCELLO ANYWHERE.  (I did get to try the Black Cherry, and it was lovely.)

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato

VODKA

So when I finally tracked down this New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato, I was very excited.  TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH TO GET IT TO MY AREA, H-D!  This is lemon gelato blended with vodka, apparently.

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato

Zesty!

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato is described as “sweet and zesty”…lemon zesty, that is.  The black cherry amaretto flavor had a distinct amaretto taste – it was very enjoyable.  But as Crazy Food Dude noted in his review, vodka is flavorless…so would I get any boozy-ness in this?

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato

Vodka is actually an ingredient.  Hmmm

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato has 240 calories per serving and this entire tub has 840 calories.  Wow.

Limoncello, BTW, is “Traditionally, it is made from the zest of Femminello St. Teresa lemons, also known as Sorrento lemons or Sfusato Lemons.Lemon zest, or peels without the pith, are steeped in grain alcohol until the oil is released. The resulting yellow liquid is then mixed with simple syrup.”  Zesty, indeed! Let’s taste.

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato: very light yellow

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato: smooth texture, easy to spoon

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato: virtually flawless in consistency

New Häagen-Dazs Limoncello Gelato was very good, but let’s get one thing out of the way right away – I tasted no vodka or any generally boozy flavor.  Zippy.  And trust me, I strained my tongue, closed my eyes and tried to taste the alcohol – nadda.  Oh well.

To be fair, I don’t think I’ve ever had limoncello liqueur either…maybe this tasted EXACTLY like it?  Maybe.  Don’t know, however.

What I DO know is that this was a very GOOD gelato for those who like lemon, but want to avoid a sorbet.  This gelato was VERY smooth, my spoon melted right through it, and VERY VERY creamy.  The lemon taste was strong and sweet and citrus-y.  It was NOT, however, sour or tart, so it didn’t go into full on lemon flavor.  Essentially, it tasted exactly like how limoncello was made – this seemed to be sweet gelato that tasted of lemon zest.  It had nice lemon flavor, did not taste like dish soap, but still stayed within that sweet range in order to mix with the creaminess of the gelato properly.

The flavor wasn’t bold, but it wasn’t meek either.  Just a good, middle ground lemon flavored gelato.  Not my personal favorite, but I give the overall construction and flavor very high marks.

My vote for which is better goes to Bay of Pigs, because Skip Bayless is terrible. Every year he keeps saying the Spurs are ‘his team’ yet he never actually picks them to win the whole thing. I’d understand choosing another team to win if your team was terrible and had about a zero chance of winning the championship, but last I checked the Spurs still have a very realistic chance at winning, so why call them your team if you’re going to constantly pick the Heat to win? From the guy who doesn’t even like LeBron! And this isn’t only during the playoffs, as he does this before the season even begins as well. The stupidity of Skip Bayless is leaps and bounds worse than a bungled CIA op.

Taking the seriousness out of Bay of Pigs, you could draw a cartoon complete with “oinks” as a comic.

  3. Dr. Stanley Goodspeed says:

Michael Bay is a lot better than either of these.

  4. Nick Rovo says:

Of course the two alcohol infused flavors interested you;]

      @Nick: Don’t they, you? 🙂

    • Nick Rovo says:

@Eric, they actually are the two flavors I’m not interested in. Alcohol flavors don’t really excite me. I’m straight edge so I never know what to expect when it comes to those flavors and these just don’t seem enticing enough. I need my mix-ins! (and no I’m not one of those psycho straight edge people, I cook with wine and such=p)

for the past two years since it was removed off of the shelves of Lucky’s food Maxx Raley’s I have been searching for a custard style lemon ice cream there are lots of women sorbets but this man does is the closest I could find and it is delicious in fact she really makes a lemon custard meringue pie in a graham cracker crust and when you remove the meringue and mix the custard graham cracker crust with the Haagen Dazs your lotto it is virtually the same. I love this stuff so much I even endeavor to make it myself and I came pretty close. my comment is regarding the vodka I do not believe that it is in there to give it a boozy taste my understanding is that since alcohol does not freeze, and since that time does not have a flavor it is used in this product to assist in freezing in a creamy state and not forming ice crystals whiruin the texture

  6. Steve says:

The limoncello is by far my favorite flavor HD has in their Gelato lineup. Having tried the best gelatos Rome’s gelaterias have to offer, as well as both Limoncello and Vodka, it is absolutely delicious, but tastes neither of Limoncello nor vodka.
