Review: Barcel Chipotle & Queso Chip-otles & You Stay Safe, Northeast

Junk Food Nation, Nemo is coming. No, not the cute baby clownfish from Pixar.  Not even the random Nintendo video game character.  (Awful game, btw).  No, Nemo, a super winter storm, is about to batter the Northeast.  It’s cancelled thousands of flights, cancelled school and work, and could dump two feet of snow onto cities like Boston and NYC.  And for a region devastated by Superstorm Sandy, that really sucks.

I grew up in upstate New York, so I’m used to snow.  You just hunker down, keep shoveling, and stay warm.  But when storms threaten to knock out the water supply, electricity, and literally STOP CARS where they are driving?? That’s a whole different story.  That’s some apocalyptic BS.

I know there will be plenty of praise and criticism to how government and private entities respond to power and other utility shortages, but the fact remains that a lot can be done on your own. So please, everyone – stay inside and stay safe. Eat junk food, drink and be merry.  Don’t do some stupid sh*t like go outside with no clothes on and have a “storm rave.”  We’ll be finding you in an iceberg in the Spring.  #EndParenting

Today’s junk food: Barcel Chipotle & Queso Chip-otles!

Barcel Chipotle & Queso Chip-otles

Barcel Chipotle & Queso Chip-otles: The Money Shot

Barcel Chipotle & Queso Chip-otles were purchased in Mexico, and were one of the only chips I bought that I didn’t think had a US-equivalent.  Barcel is a major snack food maker in Mexico, and what I saw to be the main competitor to Sabritas.  Of course, then I find out…they are BOTH owned by PepsiCo!!!  HOLY HELL.

People think the Illuminati secretly pulls the strings in this country…but I know the truth. PepsiCo rules all.

I opened up this bag of Barcel Chipotle & Queso Chip-otles, and I could SMELL the chipotle, for reals.  Now THIS is what I was expecting when I had a Mexican chip.  Lots of banging flavors and sensory overload.  I mean, let’s take a closer look…

Plus, I love the theme of these Barcel Chipotle & Queso Chip-otles — each chip is SHAPED like a chipotle pepper!  Look!

Barcel Chipotle & Queso Chip-otles: Either shaped like a chipotle pepper, or a dong

I munched on these Barcel Chipotle & Queso Chip-otles, and my eyes started to pop.  These had TONS of flavor. Chip wise, these were a standard tortilla chip – light, crispy, flaky, and crunchy.  Not too thick, but not thin like a Tostito.  These were just right.

And then the taste. LOTS of cayenne and tangy flavor.  Sort of tasted like a nice spicy cayenne pepper salsa, with some nice acid to help balance out the savoriness – it wasn’t just a pepper blast.  Was there cheese flavor? Maybe a little bit of creaminess…but it was mostly a pepper flavor.  Reminded me a lot of the Takis 2013…but kicked into overdrive.  More pepper than the chili lime of the Takis.

Oh, one last thing – the burn.  THESE WERE SPICY.  Like, a few minutes after chewy, my mouth was STILL tingling. A nice slow burn that lasted a long time, with good maximum spiciness at the peak. Woooo – Iiked it a lot.

I’m not sure I’d eat these on a regular basis because of how strong they were, but nice work, Barcel, for really creating a chip I can respect.

PURCHASED AT: OXXO store in Mexico

So now you telling me going for a 3 mile run in the snow is a bad idea. I came back caked in snow but it was actually really enjoyable aha.

@Nick: Lol, I guess it’s not so bad running in snow. I’m more thinking of people who decide at the last second to go outside and drive around.

  3. Yay! Finally a spicy chip worthy of the Junk Food Guy!

It actually says “Turn on an entire country? (or take hold of) – IMPOSSIBLE! Only Chip-otles has the authentic flavor that will turn you on EVERY TIME”.

I know b/c I’m sitting in the ghetto in Mexico with a bag in my hand and a coors light. Was just about to post a pic of them on my wall on FB and found your site. 🙂
