Review: Herr’s Sloppy Joe Flavored Potato Chips (A So Good Exclusive)

Junk Food Nation, some news!  Once every two weeks, I’ll be contributing to another great DC food blog, properly named SO GOOD: An Absurd Look at the World of Food.  Because food is so good.  And humor is so good.  And the So Good blog is really really…er…so good 🙂

But seriously, I’m excited to join Jon and his team to tackle even more when it comes to the food world, and I love that So Good is local.  Have no fear, Junk Food Nation – won’t change anything on THIS blog ever.  I’ll just be asking you to click over there once in a while.

My first review over there is up!  Below is a small preview, but then click over to So Good to read the rest! I’ll be back tomorrow with another review.  In the meantime:

Well hello there, So Good readers!  I’m Eric, your friendly neighborhood Junk Food Guy.  I write a daily junk food and snack blog called Junkfoodguy.com, but the fine people at So Good have asked me to hop on board and bring some flavor, so here we go. Every other week, I’ll be bringing you a new tasty or disgusting treat or snack and reviewing it for your pleasure.

Today’s junk food: Herr’s Sloppy Joe Flavored Potato Chips!

Herr’s Sloppy Joe Flavored Potato Chips: The Money Shot

Herr’s has been on a bit of a roll lately.  The Pennsylvania-based snack companywas founded in 1946 making simple salted spuds, and 66 years later here they are, creating flavors that no one in their right mind would think to eat.  Steak flavored chipsHot dog flavored chips. And now, Herr’s has created Sloppy Joe Flavored Potato Chips? I’m scared. WHO IS REQUESTING THESE FLAVORS?

I always wonder why all these weird chips are only at wal mart. Is it because their target consumers are only wal mart shoppers? Are they implying wal mart shoppers are weird? What kind of people shop at wal mart? I like to shop at wal mart. Does that mean i’m weird? These are the questions I like to ask before buying these weird chips.

@David: I think as probably the widest distribution of stores, companies often use Walmart as a testing ground – looks of consumer data, as it were.

CHILL OUT!! It’s because Walmart has everything walmart shoppers aren’t weird they are smart because walmart is the best

I remember seeing Lay’s run ads on TV and on their chip products for people to contribute for a new flavor over the summer and the winner would be selected from that.

  3. That’s really funny. Just today I tried their hot dog variety. My first reaction: “Wow Salty!” But then I thought,”Well, hot dogs are super salty.” So I placed a handful between two slices of bleached white Wonder bread (slathered with French’s yellow mustard) and dug right in. This is my favorite way to eat potato chips!

I love Herr’s, I grew up around the family in PA. They are all devout Christians and do a lot for the local community. With that being said, I have no earthly clue why they have some of the flavors they do and I think Utz is in direct competition for strangest unnatural chip flavors.

Also not sure why you can find most of them in Wally Worlds almost everywhere since until not so long ago they were a very regional Mid-Atlantic brand. I’m not complaining but when people think of Herr’s they should think of the excellent Herr’s, BBQ, Old Bay or Sour Cream & Onion and not the bizarre stuff that only Wally World seems to carry.
