Review: Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter

Junk Food Nation, I may post something quippy here later, but for now let’s just get right into the review.

Today’s junk food: Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter!

Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter: The Money Shot

Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter was brought to my attention by Will, a friend of this blog.  I’d never heard of this brand before, but after the endorsement, I had to check it out.  Sure enough, they carried only one flavor in my local Safeway – this White Chocolate Wonderful.

Is that a monkey with wings?

Peanut Butter & Co. began with a shop in New York City in 1998.  At this shop, they sell AMAZING combos of PB & J… for example, the Cookie Dough Surprise (PB on one side, cream cheese on the other, chocolate chips in between), the Elvis (PB, Honey, Bananas, and Bacon – wow), and their faux chicken satay sandwich (Grilled chicken, spicy peanut butter, and pineapple jam).  Absurd.

You know, I *WILL* try you with pears!

Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter is also featured in one of their shop sandwiches – it features this PB, orange marmalade and thin sliced almonds.  WOW.  That sounds…bad ass.

Very simple ingredients

Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter, along with others like it, were sold in stores for people to take home in 1999. These days, you can buy this stuff nationally and internationally.

I think the ingredients to this PB are interesting – it’s called White Chocolate Wonderful, but are the ingredients which make up the “White Chocolate” part of things merely vanilla and cocoa butter?  Weird.

Pop top

Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter smelled good when I popped the top.  Fresh peanut smell, but nothing different…yet.

VERY smooth

The consistency of this Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter was VERY smooth.  Must be the palm fruit oil.  It was a very soft texture, but unlike other peanut butter’s I’ve had, there was no overt greasiness to the surface, nor did it leave any oil on my fingertips when I manipulated it.  It felt softer than “regular” PB, though – the knife pulled through it more like thick frosting or Nutella….or maybe even like a cookie dough.

SCRUMPTIOUS

The taste of this Peanut Butter & Co. White Chocolate Wonderful Peanut Butter was, in a word, scrumptious. I was waiting for some heavy chocolate and peanut butter taste, almost expecting this to taste like a Reese’s Cup…but it didn’t.  I’ve seen some reviews that say it does, but not to me.  Instead, this tasted like a light and sweet version of peanut butter that had a hint of cocoa…and I REALLY liked that.

I can’t say that when I ate this the flavor screamed white chocolate – because it didn’t IMO.  But it was light – something I didn’t think I’d ever say when eating peanut butter…it felt like and sort of airy and very consumable.  And it was sweet – not to the extreme of a Reese’s Cup, but there was very little peanut saltiness and a lot of delicate sweetness.  And I did detect notes of chocolate flavor, which made the whole thing really tasty.

Overall, I give this good marks.  Definitely not what I expected, but the light and sweet nature of this spread lends itself to some amazing possibilities in combo sandwiches.

PURCHASED AT: Safeway

COST: On sale for $3.99 (normal $4.99)

  1. Peanut butter and white chocolate are good with just about anything (ever had white chocolate popcorn? YUM.), but with pears? Ugh, I’m afraid…

  2. Will says:

I really like this flavor, it prob the bet one that I have tried so far. I really want to try the maple flavored one, but I can’t find it in stores. I think there is a dark chocolate one too. I haven’t tried that one either.

@jfg, if u have a whole foods near u, try there for other flavors. They usually have 3 or 4 different flavors. Also Walmart carries them too., at least they do in ct.

By the way a hate the cowboys too!

    • Nick Rovo says:

I’m with Will, this is one of my favorite peanut butters but I haven’t found a peanut butter they make that disappoints me. The maple one that Will mentions is up there as well as a favorite. I also like that some of their flavors come in tiny packages seeing as I hate committing myself to one jar of peanut butter because I get bored of the same flavor after awhile.

@Nick: Good to know – yeah I gotta find some more.

BTW, sorry to everyone for not posting something else besides the review today – I had a rough work day (ugh)

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Will: Yeah I def have to try other flavors of this brand….great quality. I’m a fan

  3. Elisa says:

I used to drink hot white chocolate from Dunkin Donuts but stopped. I liked the regular and mint flavor better!

  4. Albany Dana says:

The dark chocolate one is amazing, but mostly for a topping used sparingly by itself, like on toast – the same way I use Biscoff spread. the cinnamon raisin is pretty good, but a little weird, OK for sandwiches.

  5. I LOVE PEANUT BUTTER & CO! I discovered their shop in the Village back when I still lived in Boston. They were a must visit every time I went to New York. Back then, they only sold the peanut butter in their shop and they were glass jars with hot pink lids. I used to buy their dark chocolate peanut butter every time I went, though in the shop I’d usually just have a classic fluffernutter sandwich – amazing! Love that they’ve gone wide now, though I still have to stop by their shop the next time I’m in New York…

  6. Hannah says:

All I can say is why? Why do we not have this in the UK 🙁
