Review: Doritos Flamas & A Brief Look into MLB Predictions and Predicting Tonight’s Wild Card Play-ins

Junk Food Nation, back in April some friends and I made some predictions into how the regular season would finish, as well as how the postseason would play out.  It’s all detailed at the end of this post. Let’s take a look back and see how everyone fared. I even came up with a scoring system – 1 pt for a correct team in the correct spot, .5 points for a correct team in the wrong spot (no penalty for swithcing the two wild card spots).  So how’d we do?

Junk Food Guy: correctly guessed Yankees, Tigers, Rangers (wrong spot), Braves (wrong spot), Reds, Cardinals, Nationals (wrong spot).  5.5 out of 10.

Corey: correctly guessed Yankees, Tigers, Rangers (wrong spot), Cardinals (wrong spot), Braves, Giants (wrong spot).  4.5 out of 10.

Kahnfucius: correctly guessed Tigers, Rangers, Cardinals (wrong spot), Nationals (wrong spot).  3.0 out of 10.

Hebrew Nationals: correctly guessed Tigers, Rangers, Reds, Giants (wrong spot), Cardinals.  4.5 out of 10.

What have we proven? Not much yet…we’ll check in again with the predictions as the postseason unfolds.  Let’s get to tonight’s games

BALTIMORE ORIOLES @ TEXAS RANGERS: I am having a hard time here.  I just think Texas has ZERO momentum, and in the playoffs that’s all that matters. But more than homefield, I think the pitching matchup favors Texas.  Yu Darvish has been pretty good, while Joe Saunders, despite being a lefty, has been not-so-good.  Let’s put it this way: I will personally be rooting very hard for Baltimore, but I think Texas walks away with this one definitively.

STL CARDINALS @ ATLANTA BRAVES: My former intern Alexis, a STL fan, would remind me that picked against the Cardinals last year, and they came back to win everything.  Well, you know what? I’M PICKING AGAINST THEM THIS YEAR TOO.  Sorry, Alexis. Kris Medlen has been the hottest pitcher in the second half of baseball, and there’s no way the baseball gods give Chipper Jones and early exit from the playoffs.  Atlanta takes this one.

Today’s Junk Food: Doritos Flamas!

Doritos Flamas: The Money Shot

Doritos Flamas were purchased for me by my friends, Sarah and Andrew.  This past Sunday, during football, we busted these bad boys open and the three of us, along with my buddy Rob, each took a chip and took a bite….

Doritos Flamas: Chili and limes BURSTING WITH FLAMAS.  That means flames, right?  Right?

Doritos Flamas: A little over 10 calories a chip

Doritos Flamas: Natural extractives of Red Pepper and Lime?  Oooooook. Extractives is not a word, I am convinced.

Doritos Flamas: SO BRIGHT RED!

Doritos Flamas: I felt like these chips looked radioactive, there was so much powder.

I’ll save everyone the trouble: These Doritos Flamas tasted EXACTLY like the Doritos Dinamita Chile Limon.

Sweet super-lime flavor that tasted artificial and actually sweet?  Check.  Tasted like I was eating spicy Froot Loops? Check.  Heavy chile flavor with no real discernible savoriness? Check.  A bad attempt at a Latin flavor? Check.

There’s no point in discussing these anymore.  Like the Doritos Dinamita or the Hot Sauce and Limon Corn Nut Chips, I ate a couple, swallowed them with tears in my eyes, and cursed the heavens.  YUCK.

Some comments from the others:

“It tastes like Bud Light Lime in a chip!”

“It’s like 20% chili, and 155% lime.”

“I’m sorry I bought these.”

Yup.

PURCHASED AT: in New Mexico somewhere?

COST: $4.29 retail

I’m more embarassed by my NL manager of the year prediction. But who knew that Ozzie would praise Castro and constantly make fun of his own players? Oh, that’s right, everyone knew he’d do that…At least I didn’t also pick Bobby V.

  2. Mitch says:

speaking of doritos, what is your favorite variety? For me im gonna have to give the slightest nod to the spicy sweet chili, with a special spot reserved for the classic nacho…also, I may be somewhat young But I remember when there were only 2 flavor offerings. cool ranch (YUCK!) and nacho cheese…ahh those were the days.

@Mitch: the Spicy Sweet Chili ones ARE AMAZING. Classic Nacho is right up there for me too. I think recently my favorite has been Spicy Nacho…I enjoy that little bit of added Jalapeno kick. It’s also the reason I am digging those cheddar Jalapeno cheetos.

Best line has to be “I’m sorry I bought these.”

  4. Leila says:

But…but I LOVE THESE! My sister brought us some from the US (I live in Lebanon). I almost cried when I finished them. However, the nicest flavor of all of Doritos’ attempts of being Latin was their salsa verde which I am not sure if they still make!

(The best chili flavored chips are Flamin’ Hot Lays. Death in a bag)

@Leila: LOL, to each their own! I have some friends who love all the chili lime stuff – just my opinion here 🙂 Salsa Verde was a GREAT flavor, I agree wholeheartedly.
