New Pillsbury Cheddar Sun Dried Tomato Baguette Chips & Awkward Wednesdays: Eating in the Bathroom…WTF

Junk Food Nation, we return with an Awkward Wednesday.  The other day, at work, I was in the bathroom washing my hands after using the facilities when out of one of the stalls comes another employee.  He was cinching his belt close, adjusting his waistband…and he was holding, in his teeth, a friggin’ apple he had been eating in the stall.

Now, I’m not an overly squeamish person, nor am I a clean freak, but I gagged a little when I saw that.  WHAT ON EARTH makes you think that’s ok?  Maybe I’m crazy, but I imagine a bathroom stall, no matter HOW CLEAN IT IS, to NOT be a place where food should be eaten.  Especially an APPLE, which you use YOUR HANDS TO HOLD.  YUCK.

(Additionally, I can attest that my office buildings bathrooms are NOT the cleanest in the world.  WHY IS THERE WATER EVERYWHERE???)

Look, I’m not opening a toilet humor debate here, but I just think (1) all food eating should be banned from bathrooms, and (2) ESPECIALLY FOODS YOU NEED TO USE YOUR HANDS FOR.  Of course, I guess it’s no grosser than playing Words with Friends on the throne, but I’m insisting there’s a difference.  NO ORANGE PEELING IN THE BATHROOM.  YOU ARE INFECTING THAT ORANGE WITH YOUR GRUBBY HANDS THAT YOU USE TO TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS.  NASTY.

I dunno, Junk Food Nation – am I totally off base?  Or do you agree?  Let me know in the comments below.

Today’s junk food: New Pillsbury Cheddar Sun Dried Tomato Baguette Chips!

New Pillsbury Cheddar Sun Dried Tomato Baguette Chips: The Money Shot

New Pillsbury Cheddar Sun Dried Tomato Baguette Chips were found in my local Fresh n Green grocery store.  And they were damn expensive too – over $3.00 a bag for a relatively small bag.  Still I was swayed by the NEW NEW NEW banner across the top.  I stood there staring at the bag until the Junk Food Gal rolled her eyes and said, “Just get them already!” Sigh. She knows me too well.

Baguette Chips?

My first question is how are these New Pillsbury Cheddar Sun Dried Tomato Baguette Chips different than pita chips, bagel chips, or any other chip made from a bread substance?  We’ll see.  Still, i liked the idea of cheddar sun dried tomato flavoring.

Clear picture

New Pillsbury Cheddar Sun Dried Tomato Baguette Chips were on full display on this really glossy bag.  Seriously, no matter which angle I turned too there was extreme glare.  Anyways, these baguette chips look like the kind you buy in the grocery store that are uber thick and crunchy.  I’m kind of excited for these.

GLARE

So long double dip?

“Just right for one bite.” ….. doesn’t roll off the tongue for me, Pillsbury.  Sorry.

130 cal per serving

Normal ingredients

Caloric count for these New Pillsbury Cheddar Sun Dried Tomato Baguette Chips is pretty standard, and the ingredients look amazingly like those you’d find in a bag of croutons.  Hmmm.

OPENED!

New Pillsbury Cheddar Sun Dried Tomato Baguette Chips LOOKED good, and SMELLED GOOD TOO.  As soon as I opened the bag, huge cheese and tomato powder smell came tumbling out.  This seemed very promising.  Time to take a crunch…

Lightly powdered

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.  I’ll just say it – these were not great.  And I really REALLY wanted these New Pillsbury Cheddar Sun Dried Tomato Baguette Chips to be great.  Sigh.  Ok, lemme break it down.

The problem isn’t the crunch…well, not entirely.  These little baguette chips, each about the size of a half dollar, were plenty crunch and just the right thickness.  Didn’t have the same flakiness as pita chips, and didn’t have the softer crunch of bagel chips.  These were definitely a denser breadchip with a definite crunch.  In fact, the crunch bordered on a stale crunch – almost that rigid.

The problem also wasn’t the flavor, per se.  When i got a chip that was nicely coated with powder, I could take some great cheesy garlic flavor, and there was a definite tangy tinge of sun dried tomato as well as the aftertaste of sun dried tomato that lingered on my teeth.

The main problem was INCONSISTENCY.  MOST pieces barely tasted of anything at all, where as some were only sort of coated.  Out of all the handfuls I had, only a few here or there had enough flavor for me to enjoy the chip.  For the most part, it sort of tasted like a bag of croutons…and even the croutons I buy had more flavor than these.

Sorry, Pillsbury.  I really wanted to like these…but I didn’t.

PURCHASED AT: Fresh n Greens

COST: $3.68 (these were sort of pricey)

  1. Chip FAIL! 🙁 And way too expensive – what’s their market? Stuck up people who think chip bags that cost 99 cents are beneath them? Boo…they probably have other flavors too…avoid!

    • Shorneys says:

I think their market is anyone who might want to make a canape but can’t think far enough ahead to slice a baguette and toast it beforehand. Buy these suckers and throw together a dollop of store-bought pesto, a quarter slice of salami, and half a ball of grape-sized fresh mozzarella. THAT’S CLASSY! Instant cocktail party that’s so much better than easy cheez on a wheat thin.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Shorneys: True dat – I think the logic. Though Easy Cheez on Wheat Thin is a winning app too

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Teresapalooza: TOO LATE – I bought another flavor with this one 🙁

  2. Lindemann says:

I don’t trust baguette chips to satisfy my snacking appetite. It only counts if you are at a party and loading them up with warmish Brie. Like, embarrassing quantities of Brie.

  3. Nick Rovo says:

Why must we turn every bread like object into chips? Next we’ll be seeing brioche crisps and ciabatta chips.
