End of the Week Newsgasm: Aurora, Crazy Vending Machines, More…

Junk Food Nation, it’s the end of the week, so I’d like to just mention some news and other articles that have been suggested to me to blog about but haven’t made the pages yet. Briefly:

1) Bob Chinn’s is an Illinois seafood restaurant that last year grossed $24 million dollars.  24 MILLION!!! HOLY MOTHER!

Bobby Chinn!

I know that successful restaurants did well financially, but 24 MILL???  Part of the reason is volume, apparently, as the restaurant can serve 700 hundred people at once.  Please let me never have to use the bathroom there.

2)  KFC, ever the international trendsetter, has decided to start serving, in the Philippines, a cheeseburger (THAT MAKES NO SENSE), that has the cheese melted ON TOP of the burger:

What the

It’s known as the Cheese Top Burger.  THE KFC CHEESE TOP BURGER. How many things wrong can you spot in that phrase??? And what thought process goes into suggesting this burger?

“Hey, you know how people would much rather have the cheese on the outside of a sandwich?”

“No, Bill.  No I don’t. You’re a moron.”

3) PIZZA VENDING MACHINES ARE COMING!  These machines will make a pizza for you FROM SCRATCH.  Say whhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I need one for my office. Or living room. Now. Also, best YouTube comment:

“EVIDENCE THAT PIZZA MAKES YOU FAT: at 3:03 the poor girl has clearly eaten so much pizza that she’s having trouble fastening her blouse ;-)”

4) My friend Ceci pointed out to me that Sprinkles cupcake company is going to have a Cupcake ATM machine in Georgetown soon.  This machine will give you a chance to purchase overpriced cupcakes at any hour! One of the owners noted that when she was pregnant:

“All I wanted at the time was cupcakes, but nothing was open at that hour,” she said. “I thought ‘I own a cupcake shop and I can’t even get my hands on one. Just think of all of those pregnant women out there who would love a cupcake vending machine.’”

What the hell are you talking about? You own the shop and couldn’t get one? Here’s a thought: BRING SOME EARLIER IN THE DAY AND BRING THEM HOME.  Am I missing something here???

Here’s a video of the ATM in action:

5) The lead story for today is of course the senseless shooting in Aurora, Colorado.  For those of you who weren’t aware of the one news story running all day, the long and short of it is this: During a late night / early morning Screening of the new Batman film, a lone gunman wearing a gas mask entered a theater, threw a smoke/tear gas bomb and just started to shoot people, killing 12, wounding dozens.  Awful. A nation’s thoughts and prayers go out to you, Aurora. The situation is horrible and unthinkable.

What possible reason could there be for this tragedy??? With many of the previous horrible tragedies, you could at LEAST put a label on the horribly mad motivations: 9/11 (hatred of the US), Oklahoma City bombing and the Gabrielle Giffords shooting (hatred of government), Columbine (revenge on school subcultures)…but this? It’s gonna come out that this guy thought he WAS the Batman villain Bane or something equally crazy.

The most horrifying part is that some people were interviewed as saying they thought it was part of the movie, some kind of movie theater promotion.  So bizarre and sad.

Stay safe out there, everyone. See you tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Junk Food Guy

  1. I just got caught up on all the Aurora news – SO tragic. Will be very interested to learn more about the shooter as the day goes on – I’m sure the news will dig up that story quickly.

I *love* the idea of a pizza vending machine – yes, please! And as for the KFC Cheesetop Burger, my friend Sandy was in this sketch for Jimmy Kimmel – http://abc.go.com/shows/jimmy-kimmel-live/video-detail/clips/kfcs-new-cheeseburger/pl_PL5520978/vd_VD55215255

    OMG!
