MV’s Best Milk Chocolate & Toffee Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts & What the Hell CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, all news outlets??

Junk Food Nation, yesterday the Supreme Court came out with it’s decision regarding the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as the ACA, nicknamed by some as ObamaCare, etc.  Whether you agree or disagree with it, it happened.

Also, in the news was the huge gaffe made by CNN, Fox News, and a lot of other news outlets who reported that, after reading the first page, the individual mandate of the health care plan had been struck down.  This gaffe has been lampooned at this point by everyone – Colbert Report, Jon Stewart, internet memes, morning talk shows, late night talk shows, etc.

The sentiment that remains is WTF, news?  You wonder why people distrust you, on either partisan side, when stuff like this makes it clear that you would rather be first, than be accurate.  Look, I get stuff on this blog wrong all the time…I misspell things, I misquote things, I forget words.  And I realize that I should strive for excellence and not have those things occur.  BUT I AM A JUNK FOOD BLOG.  NOT A HUGE CORPORATE NEWS CONGLOMERATE, LIKE YOU, YOU MORONS.

The Health Care debate is not going to end, and I’m not wishing to start the debate here.  But I think all of us – liberal, conservative, moderate, green, red, chartreuse, should all be pretty pissed that the news did not exercise proper quality control.  You can’t run a restaurant, put out under-cooked chicken, and then say nothing happened because the customer only had one bite before you caught it!  Idiots.

Today’s junk food: MV’s Best Milk Chocolate & Toffee Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts!

MV’s Best Milk Chocolate & Toffee Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: Some elegant looking cans here

These two varieties of MV’s Best Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts were send to me in the mail to review.  MV’s Best were created by Mary Vaden, are a Shenandoah Valley peanut company.  According to Wiki, Virginia is peanut country, and Virginia peanuts are known for being…well, big.  Big ass peanuts.

I like peanuts. While I don’t always seek them out, I do have those moments where I just have a jar of peanuts and I can’t stop chomping on them. I tend to go more for savory peanuts, but I am willing to eat these candied ones for the good of the blog.  Woe is me.

MV’s Best Milk Chocolate Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: The Money Shot. Also, love the embossed foil peanut plant.  Classy.

MV’s Best Milk Chocolate Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: Made in the great state of Virginia?? What’s so great about it? Plus…the can says you’re manufactured in Jersey? WTF.

MV’s Best Milk Chocolate Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: Decent natural ingredients.

MV’s Best Milk Chocolate Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: pretty big ass chocolate covered peanuts (don’t eat the drying packet)

MV’s Best Milk Chocolate Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: Solid coating to a great peanut

MV’s Best Milk Chocolate Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts were pretty tasty, but nothing special in the chocolate department, IMO.  Definitely a normal milk chocolate taste, sweet and full of cocoa flavor. While not waxy like some other chocolate covered peanuts in the past I’d eaten, these still just sort of fell apart in my mouth – the chocolate shell became detached from the peanut and kind of slid around in my mouth.  Still, the Virginia Peanut was very tasty. Good solid flavor without need to add any extra salt.

MV’s Best Toffee Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: The Money Shot.  Also, what makes these FINE Virginia peanuts? Are they gentlemanly?

MV’s Best Toffee Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: Hmmm, I shoulda tipped the camera for this pic to make the ingredient list easier to read…sorry.

MV’s Best Toffee Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: Oh wait, nevermind – I took this picture anyways.  Sugar, butter, peanuts are ingredients 1, 2, 3.  Nice.

MV’s Best Toffee Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: Big chunks of toffee brittle!

MV’s Best Toffee Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts: Each mash of peanuts is a substantial hunk of love

I liked these MV’s Best Toffee Fine Virginia Cocktail Peanuts a lot.  Basically, when you open the can, these are just big chunks of what appears to be peanut brittle – big Virginia peanuts encased in butter and sugar. But when I bit into it, it wasn’t a solid rock – it came apart, in fact, very easily and produced a very satisfying toffee crunch.  Not as flaky as a Butterfinger, but this certainly didn’t feel like I was eating hard candy.  The toffee was sweet, caramel-y, and VERY buttery which I liked, and the taste of the large peanuts definitely came through.  The mix was done right and very satisfying.

Maybe I just don’t like chocolate covered peanuts in general, but I thought that amongst the two, the Toffee variety was the clear winner.  If you have the chance, pick up a can or two.

I think you are selling yourself short. I crave high standards of journalistic integrity from my junk food blogs as much as my news behemoths.

  2. Lindemann says:

Virginia is a commonwealth, not a state. You’d think Virginians would know that. And also “great” is kind of stretching it. Among commonwealths, I guess they’re OK. So basically a large percentage of the text on the front of the can is completely inaccurate. I’d still eat the hell out of those toffee peanuts though.

@Lindemann: That’s some Maryland pride right there

    • shorneys says:

      Commonwealth of Massachusetts, bitches!

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Shorneys: How many commonwealths are there?

    • Shorneys says:

@ JFG: There are 4. They are Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Kentucky. Massachusetts and Virginia. Nowadays, this is most often found in the captions to criminal prosecution cases: Commonwealth v. Defendant. I don’t know about the other three, but Massachusetts rather pedantically insists on the use of ‘Commonwealth’ rather than ‘State,’ a tendency that, unsurprisingly, I endorse.

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Shorneys – only 4? Why did I think there were five? ….isn’t Rhode Island one?

EDIT: Nevermind – I was thinking of Puerto Rico

    • Lindemann says:

Right. I think the ranking of the commonwealths goes:

      Massachusetts
      Pennsylvania
      Virginia
      Puerto Rico
      Kentucky

Trying to be objective here, as Virginia is last in my heart.

  3. Fancy schmancy peanuts! Seriously, these would look great in a fancy gift basket with fancy wine and fancy cheese – probably what they’re going for. Because otherwise they’re Goobers, right? 😉
