Classic BLT Lays Potato Chips & Awkward Mondays: Sports Loyalties and Work Relationships

Junk Food Nation, I must admit, I entered work this morning with a little trepidation. Why? Because yesterday my Kansas Jayhawks beat the UNC Tar Heels, and my boss is a HUGE Tar Heels fan.  Like, die hard.  Like, even I must admit she is a bigger fan of UNC than I am of Kansas.  Prior to the weekend, we had chuckled about a potential weekend KU and UNC matchup; Bill Self vs. Roy Williams.  So when the Jayhawks began pulling away yesterday and gave themselves a 10-point cushion as time ticked down, I smiled, sat down, breathed, and thought, “Shit. I’m getting fired.”

Not really, of course, but still – sports loyalties at work are sometimes very awkward situations for everyone.  If you’re a Patriots fan, and you just lost to the Giants for the second time in the Super Bowl, you are going to get razzed mercilessly the next morning at work.  Friendships might end over discussions about Tom Brady being overrated.  If you’re a Miami Heat fan, you had the whole nation and the whole office rooting against you last year in the NBA Finals, and had to grit your teeth, smile, and say, “Wait til next year…” after the Mavericks took care of business.  And for me, a (gasp!) Yankees fan, I have to hear it from EVERYONE when the Yankees lose.  Which some would say I deserve.

There’s nothing more awkward than having to chuckle sheepishly “Yeah…I guess it wasn’t their year” while you’re fuming on the inside about a loss, or to have to talk about whatever game happened the night before in the morning, at lunch, during breaks, and having the entire office gang up on you. I just wanna punch everyone in the face.

So yeah, I haven’t seen my boss yet, but hopefully we can agree to act like yesterday never happened…as I quietly whisper “Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, KUUUUUUUU” under my breath and fist pump under my desk.

Today’s junk food: Classic BLT Lays Potato Chips!

The Money Shot

You know, it’s been a while since I did a simple potato chip that wasn’t Ruffled or Kettle Cooked.  When my sister bought me these Classic BLT Lays Potato Chips, I knew they had to go up on this blog.

Who doesn't love BLTs?

Classic BLT Lays Potato Chips? You kidding me?  I thought I’d have to wait until my Ireland trip this coming May to try wacky Walker Crisp-type flavors.. but Classic BLT on a potato chip takes the cake.  I mean, why NOT make chips that taste like a sandwich??? Where’s my meatball sub chips – need those, STAT!

"Natural seasonings"

Adding a delicious blend of bacon, ripe tomatoes and cool lettuce to every bite?  Why does this give me the heebie jeebies?

"Natural lettuce flavor"

Classic BLT Lays Potato Chips contain BLT seasoning, sour cream, tomato powder, and some natural flavors.  I can see where they’re going with this; we’ll see how its executed.

Crispy!

Classic BLT Lays Potato Chips have a classic potato chip look – light, crispy, semi translucent.  When I smelled the bag, I could smell definite smokey flavor – probably the bacon seasoning.  Plus, I could actually smell a bit of tang – sort of like tomato, but with the bacon smell, it was more like a tangy smokey BBQ smell.

Flecked with flavor

I popped a few in my mouth and chewed – the taste of these Classic BLT Lays Potato Chips…wasn’t bad!  You immediately taste bacon flavor, and the sour cream goes a long way to make the entire thing creamy.  This combo mimicked the type of creaminess you usually get with mayo an bacon inside a good BLT.  Did I taste tomato? A little bit – there was a tang which evoked fresh tomato, and when I sucked on a chip, I could taste what I know a tomato and mayo together typically tastes like.  Did I taste lettuce?  I can’t say I did, honestly.

So did these taste like a BLT? Sort of…bacon and tomato and mayo…not bad.  But I’d probably pass in the future.

Update: 10:28.  My boss and I are cool.  and upon eating more of these chips, I’ve decided I like them and have changed my mind: I WOULD eat these again.

So if I get your update straight, you were previously skeptical of wanting to eat these chips again, but after having eaten the chips again, you then decided that you would eat these chips again. Quite the temporal loop you’ve got going there, JFG.

I’m happy to see that this is a bacon-flavored product that finally isn’t certified kosher. I am curious though what “bacon type flavor” is, and whether it is different from straight-up bacon flavor.

  2. Does lettuce even have a flavor? If it does, I can’t think of a single word to describe it other than “watery”…
