Classic Junk Food: Sweet Spicy Chili & Spicy Nacho Doritos & Happy 11-11-11 Veterans Day!

Junk Food Nation, Happy Veterans Day!  Thank you to all who have served, are serving, and will serve.

Today is also 11-11-11, a day so numerically unique, that it will feature:

(1) people making wishes at 11:11am and 11:11pm,

(2) people performing over 24,000 weddings,

(3) companies using 11-11-11 in their advertising prominently, and

(4) millions of Twitter and Facebook users doing bad 11-11-11 schtick all day long.  Fun.

How am I spending my holiday? No work, watching Fast Five on my computer, NFL network on TV, installing Lion OSX onto my mac, and writing this blog.  Since its a holiday, I decided to take it easy and go over two classic junk foods that I enjoy immensely, and since everyone has had them before, I’ll keep the comments low.  First up: Sweet Spicy Chili Doritos!

The Sweet Spicy Money Shot

When i first saw these, I was curious what sweet spicy meant – thai chili?  BBQ spicy?  Some mixture of both?

Tribal font

The use of mixed font, using tribal, cursive, and Arial altogether, is a bold move…as bold as these chips?

Flames a plenty

These chips are on fire!

I dare, I DARE!

My taste buds win, eh?  I’m stoked for that.  UNLEASH THE FLAVOR!

Sweet Spicy Chipperoos

These Doritos weren’t ultra orange/red like traditional Doritos, opting more for the Cool-Ranch style corn chip color with lots of non-cheese powdering on top.

Lightly dusted

Every single crevice of these chips was dusted with the combo of onion powder, garlic powder, and other spices.

Powdered

Up close, you can see the large whitish granules sticking to every burnt speck on these corn chips.

Powder fur

And the taste: amazing.  Sweet almost like a BBQ sauce but more sweet oniony, these chips had a delicious sweet savory flavor that was punctuated with spice.  Not REALLY spicy, but after a half a bag of chips, I got a TINY burn.  These, to me, were like Cool Ranch chips with more sweet onion flavor and a little kick to them.

Since the Sweet Spicy Chili chips weren’t satisfying my burn habit, I turned to the other classic: Spicy Nacho Doritos!

The Spicy Nacho Money Shot

Spicy Nacho Doritos really are one of my favorite junk foods.  The flavor of these reminds of the Cheddar Jalapeno Cheetos – another favorite of mine.  And really, the formula is so simple – take Nacho Cheese Doritos and add burn.  Genius.

Flaming lips

Spicy Nacho Doritos seem to be on even more fire than the Sweet Spicy Chili version.

<insert dork joke>

Yeah, if I was 13, I’m not sure I’d want to be featured on a bag of Doritos, like some missing persons ad.  I don’t care what its for.

Orange cheesy red

Now THOSE’RE some CHEESY LOOKING DORITOS!

Crisp and cheesy

Spicy Nacho Doritos look a lot like regular Nacho Cheese Doritos – perfectly crisp and covered in orange powder.

Love the green specks

The green specks provide the very necessary jalapeno kick to these chips.  And the result – awesome.  Great crunch and great cheesy flavor, like you’d come to expect.  Then there’s the added spicy kick, very prominent. For me, it doesn’t REALLY burn at all, but I can taste the pepper and I can taste the spice.  That’s all I need – these are definitely like Nacho Cheese Doritos on steroids.  A great, classic, Frito-Lay product.

I hope all of you are enjoying your holiday!  Chat me up in the comments below or hit me on Twitter @junkfoodguy or on my Facebook Page.

I have to say, I didn’t much care for the Sweet Spicy Chili Doritos. There was far too much sweet onion going on, as if someone had pulverized a bag of Funyuns and sprinkled *those* onto a bag of cool ranch Doritos. Weird. No like.

I do like the Spicy Nacho Doritos though. I would like to say, incidentally, what is it about Doritos that make your mouth smell like Doritos for the rest of the day? I could brush my teeth five times between an afternoon Dorito snack and the following morning, and I’d still have Dorito breath for breakfast. Is it just me? Surely it’s not just me.

Whenever I eat Sweet Spicy Nachos it tastes like a sweet onion and i have eaten at a sitting 20 Spicy Nacho chips, but there is no burn, more like nacho with a really small dash of bell pepper
