3 Musketeers Truffle Crisp Bar & Come On Irene

Ahem.

Poor old Biscayne Bay
Sounded bad upon weather radio, storm moved a million ballers indoors.
Tons of travelers cried…canceled flights and who’d blame them.
Now you’re drenched, so drenched, now I must say more than ever.
Go Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye
and go prepare for potential flooding.

Come on Irene,
I swear (well she means) At this moment you mess up everything,
With you heading west oh my thoughts I confess are on emergency safety
Ah come on Irene.

You know, the idea of doing a parody of Come on Eileen with hurricane lyrics sounded funnier in my head. And then once I started it was hard to stop. Sigh. Win some lose some. Hope everyone is safe during this storm!

Today’s junk food: 3 Musketeers Truffle Crisp Bars!

The Money Shot

I enjoy 3 Musketeers bars in their normal form. Usually, 3 Musketeers is just a log of sweet sweet nougat surrounded on all sides by milk chocolate. When I was a kid, I used to eat them in various ways – I’d peel off all sides of chocolate and eat those first, and then nibble away at the nougat itself; I’d bite right into the bar and chew profusely; I’d melt them in the microwave and eat the ooze with a spoon. 3 Musketeers bars, I felt, were decadent – all that nougat in one place!  Yum.

Enrobed, huh? Enrobed?

Then my friend Lindsey (her amazing restaurant blog here) introduced me to the Truffle Crisp.  Now, I know these aren’t new per se – I believe they came out over a year and a half ago – but I hadn’t seen them in the store until Lindsey gave me this one. Now I’m noticing them EVERYWHERE.  As the website and the wrapper states this is whipped chocolate truffle sitting on a crisp airy layer of nougat covered in chocolate.

One beef – there are two bars of candy in this individually package, and the Mars Corporation is already acknowledging that its two bars per serving… so why are you giving me calorie information PER BAR! I’m not gonna eat just one!  Why are we even having this conversation??

Cross section = nice

Good product representation here – simple and now I know what to expect as it matches with the description above.

Sidenote: The Three Musketeers, a book by Alexandre Dumas, is a fictional story set in France. FICTIONAL. I once was having a conversation with a friend who stated, “I think it was back during the time of those musketeers.” I almost choked on the beer I was having. Even after I pointed out on Wikipedia that it was just a book, he insisted, “But why would they make so many movies out of a fake story?” I dunno, idiot. Because Charlie SheenKiefer SutherlandChris O’DonnellOliver Platt, and Tim Curry needed the money?

The swirly backs of the bars

3 Musketeers, years back, had a great commercial campaign that actually used claymation versions of the fabled Three Musketeers. I wonder if kids these days (1) even know who these characters are, and (2) want to learn fencing as much as I did when I was a little kid.

Upon opening up the package, I was confronted with the backs/bottoms of the chocolate bars. I loved the pattern on the back – like they were smaller pieces of some greater piece of artwork. Maybe if I had a hundred Truffle Crisp bars, they form a map to the Fountain of Youth! Or…maybe I’m a weirdo.

Ah, enrobed!

The tops of the bars were pretty standard. Chocolate covering with some signature wiring design going back a forth. The taste would be the key…

Good distinction

…wow, delicious. As you bite through the chocolate coating, your teeth sink first into the soft chocolate truffle part of the candy bar until it hits the crisp nougat layer. Then the rest snaps off into your mouth. Chewing it all together, it’s reminiscent of a normal 3 Musketeers bar but with a little more chocolate. The coating plus the truffle gave off a great chocolatey flavor.  The “nougat” had the consistency of space ice cream or a meringue cookie – light and crispy that if you sucked on it would dissolve on your tongue.

An interesting combination with a successful result. Nice job, Mars Corp.

Sincerely, Junk Food Guy

“Fluffy chocolate in the hole!” I don’t remember that commercial at all. How do you find these things?

Did you know there’s a new Three Musketeers movie coming out? In pointless 3D! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQd3MwT2fAM

I love Three Musketeers too – no annoying caramel to get in the way – just the good stuff. Will have to give these new bars a try!
