Review: Lay’s Southern Biscuits & Gravy Potato Chips & Chicken Wing Inquiry: Favorite Non-Buffalo Flavor?

JFG Nation, what’s going on in the world today? It’s National Chicken Wing Day! Another useless food holiday, but who cares? I love ’em. All across the nation, various food establishments are promoting wing deals for today, Wednesday July 29. While $5 for six wings is a decent deal, I sigh when I think of quarter-wing night in my hometown I grew up in: a dozen wings for $3. Now THAT’S a DEAL, son.

I’ve rambled on and on and on about what my wing preference is on this website before. Anytime a new Buffalo Wing flavored chip comes out, I recount my parameters – tang, spice, vinegar, etc. I’ve made no secret that I don’t like a heap of breading on my wings (looking at you, Hooters) and I like my wings well done and crispy – none of this skin flap BS.

Recently, in DC, my go-to wings haven’t been buffalo-style at all – they’ve been Korean Double-Fried style from Bon Chon. OH THE SOY GLAZE DELIGHTFULNESS. And trust me, it takes a lot for me to venture away from my Frank’s Red Hot comfort zone. But I realize that many people out there DON’T love Buffalo flavor. “It’s too spicy,” a girl I went out with once said. “I only eat lemon pepper wings.” I looked at her like she was an alien.

Places like Buffalo Wild Wings don’t only have hot sauce wings, but also have flavors like Salt & Vinegar, Jammin’ Jalapeno (Jalapeno and Lime), and Thai Curry. Wing Stop has a Hawaiian blend, with fruit and Asian flavors. And people order and ENJOY these non-Buffalo flavors! My head is spinning. I’m waiting for Red Velvet Oreo Wings to pop up somewhere.

So I ask YOU, JFG Nation – if you’re not having Buffalo wings, then what kind of wings ARE you having? Are you a Jerk Chicken loyalist? Are you a Parmesan Garlic devotee? Tell me in the comments below. And while you’re at it, tell me about any local joint near you that sells your go-to wings. And don’t say McDonalds. Mighty Wings were a mistake and we all know it.

Lay’s Southern Biscuits & Gravy Potato Chips: The Money Shot

After reviewing the West Coast Truffle Fries Chips and the Greektown Gyro Chips, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this third flavor, Lay’s Southern Biscuits & Gravy Potato Chips. On the Nosh Show, I predicted this would be the most palatable flavor, simply because, well, it looks like the most boring. And I don’t particularly mean that in a BAD way, despite how that sounds – classic biscuits and white gravy is popular because its creamy, delicious, and not weird.

In most recipes, white gravy is made from lard, flour, butter, milk, salt, and pepper. It’s a meaty smooth salty roux-like gravy. Some add bits of meat like sausage to it, and some add more spices.  It’s a delicious starchy slurry of fat, salt, and cream. What’s not to like? Eat it with some starchy biscuits and you’ll be sleeping for days. I love it. I love me some biscuits and gravy, ESPECIALLY with sausage.

Lay’s Southern Biscuits & Gravy Potato Chips is suggested by Hailey, who LIVES in Indiana but is referring to a dish she had in Tennessee. Lay’s, WTF. This is the THIRD flavor that skews the whole geographic element. Sure, at least the flavor actually IS Southern…but no link to someone who actually LIVES in the South? This isn’t Midwest Biscuits & Gravy! BOO.

Lay’s Southern Biscuits & Gravy Potato Chips contain buttermilk and spice. Like I said, I expect these to be pretty basic – there’s no way Lay’s can screw this up. (Famous last words.)

Opening this bag of Lay’s Southern Biscuits & Gravy Potato Chips, I can smell a healthy herb-y aroma of rosemary and sage. Like breakfast sausage. I inhaled deeply. Smelled creamy. Smelled good.

I popped a healthy dose of these thin Lay’s Southern Biscuits & Gravy Potato Chips into my mouth and chewed…and I was right. These were very palatable. Tasty, even. But…did these taste like biscuits and gravy?

The very basic impression I got is that these tasted like creamy salt & pepper potato chips. So if you’ve ever had those before, add a bit of milky creaminess to that, and you’ve got these chips. The sage and rosemary I smelled didn’t translate at all to the actual taste – I picked it up a tiny bit, but the pepper taste was stronger than those. The creaminess did remind me of the roux-like flavor of white gravy, and there was a tiny tang on the back end that signaled the buttermilk to me. But did I pick up any breakfast sausage flavor? Nope…but maybe I wasn’t supposed to.

So did these taste like white gravy? Yeah…..I guess. I would’ve like the black pepper, sage, and rosemary flavors to be kicked up a TON more, and for a little bit of sausage meat flavor in there. Then I’d REALLY like these. As it stands, these were just ok.

Now, despite me just giving me a so-so rating, that doesn’t mean these tasted BAD. They were so basically palatable that I couldn’t stop eating them. But that’s the basic point – there was nothing particularly bold or special about these chips. I chain ate these like I chain eat Ritz crackers – in essence, there was nothing special about them TO get bored of.

So yeah, I guess my rankings, so far, are West Coast Truffle Fries in the lead, with the Biscuits and Gravy and Gyro chips being 2A and 2B. Overall, underwhelmed by this year’s offerings.

    Daughter of a native Buffalonian here, and I LOVE true buffalo wings…the closest I can come to non-Buffalo preference is BWW’s Mango Habenero. I can’t see ordering wings for the sake of wings and it not being at least spicy.

    I don’t eat any non-Buffalo wings, but I eat Buffalo wings at least twice a week – does that count?

    I’m with you on the Bon Chon wings, though I get the spicy and not the soy garlic (or at the very least, a half-and-half plate). For me, the thing I dislike about Buffalo sauce is the vinegar. I can handle the heat just fine: the vinegar is the problem.

    I also have an unreasonable love for the almost totally barren chicken wings one finds at cheap Chinese buffet joints, because they remind me of childhood, even though they’re not actually very good at all.

    I really have no preference on Buffalo wings – only that it has a decent amount of meat on it.

    I usually go for honey barbecue if I’m not having traditional Buffalo wings. As a side note, I googled “Red Velvet Oreo Chicken Wings” in hopes that they were already out there somewhere. I got nothin’. The world is waiting… 😉

    I like almost all wing sauces, but my favorite is jalapeno raspberry. Tastes way better than it sounds. And I like to ask for a side of honey garlic, straining out nearly all the honey and sprinkling the garlic on top. Heaven.

  8. Do you think they intentionally chose sort of lame flavors so they could be like ‘ok, this is lame now, no more good ideas, we’re not going to do this anymore’? Or is America really out of good ideas?

    Most creative, non-traditional wings we had was at a place in Lake Placid, they have Greek wings, basically like standard Greek chicken, but in little chicken wing form. It was delicious – olive oil, lemon, oregano…with a feta dipping sauce.

    The mild wings at Harolds Chicken or the Seoul Sassy Korean Wings at Crisp. Also so many others…Chicago is good at wings. OOO Dak has some good Korean wings as well if you’re in the area and not already full of tasty buns from Chiu Quon Bakery.

    I actually really liked these chips. I thought they tasted EXACTLY like biscuits and gravy…which is a food I order at every new breakfast place I go to…They definitely had a peppery sausage flavor to me. *shrug* oh well, everyone tastes things a bit differently.

    I really like the wings from, of all places, Guiseppi’s. Not the one next to the courthouse but the one in G’Burg. Remember Jamie brought them to the Super Bowl party? Meaty, flavorful, well done (like I like), and more BBQ than Buffalo. To me, the sign of a good wing is if it holds up a couple of hours or a day later.

    I love the Caribbean Jerk wings from BWW and their current special Apple Cinnamon were pretty amazing. The greatest wings I’ve ever eaten were at an international food festival with someone representing Belize. They were jerk wings with a really spicy BBQ sauce to go with them. Really wish I got the information to buy more.

    i mainly just eat bbq wings. and i mainly like honey bbq. i’m all about the sweet sauce 🙂 i also like teriyaki or any sweet asian sauce.

    I like Lays funky flavored chips, so I want to try these.

    All the ads on this page are for cow drugs. Wouldn’t pig drugs make more sense given what’s being reviewed?

    I really like parm garlic wings. I honestly get my wings @BW3, because I like the Tuesday special.

    Go to chicken wing favorite: Wing Stop Louisiana Rub. All drummies. Crispy, and juicy, and Sooo buttery! Salty-seasoned-yum!!

    And 2015 is Lay’s best ‘Do Us A Flavor’ year ever!!

    Um….They(biscuit and gravy flavor) taste like sour cream and onion….very disappointed….not anywhere close to southern style biscuits and gravy…I would know…I’m pure bred and born in Georgia….

    Didn’t think that anything could top the Reuben Chip. But yeah the Southern Gravy chip does. Amazing. It was the last chip of the four I expected anything special from.

    Initially, it sounded stupid. Where’s the chicken in the gravy? Why no mention of sausage? What kind of gravy was it which has no relation to a meat of some kind?

    But I voted it #1 because it is indeed something cheerful and mild, harmless and pleasant, which–I’ve come to realize–is what I want in a Lay’s chip.

    The Reuben chip is so good it’s actually a little spooky. Menacing temptation posed by that bad boy. I don’t want any potato chip to taste that good. Burrr!

    I want exactly what this gravy chip offers: easygoing, fun, forgettable…nothing to actually have to THINK about. #1 for me..
